THE TIME IS NOW 5:30 AND I CALL THE SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2023, MEETING OF THE EANES BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO ORDER.

[2. ESTABLISH A QUORUM]

MADAM SECRETARY, DO WE HAVE A QUORUM? WE DO. THANK YOU.

WE WILL NOW MOVE INTO CLOSED SESSION PURSUANT TO TEXAS GOVERNMENT CODE 551.071 AND 551.074.

[3. CLOSED SESSION]

WE WILL RECONVENE IN OPEN SESSION AT APPROXIMATELY 7:00 PM.

THANK YOU FOR COMING AND SEE YOU IN A BIT.

YOU DIDN'T TAKE YOUR JACKET OFF? YEAH, MAYBE WE HAVE A MINUTE.

[4. RECONVENE INTO OPEN SESSION]

THE TIME IS NOW. 7 P.M., AND WE WILL RECONVENE IN OPEN SESSION.

I JUST WANT TO LOOK OUT AT THE CROWD AND SAY THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TONIGHT.

WE DO APPRECIATE YOUR ATTENDANCE AND YOUR ATTENTION TO OUR DISTRICT AND YOUR INTEREST IN WHAT WE'RE DOING AND HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY YOUR VISIT HERE TONIGHT.

I KNOW THAT SOME OF YOU ARE HERE FOR SPECIFIC TOPICS, AND IT'S OKAY IF YOU LEAVE AFTER THAT SPECIFIC TOPIC.

WE DON'T GET OFFENDED BY PEOPLE WALKING OUT.

JUST DO SO QUIETLY, PLEASE, AND DON'T DISRUPT THE MEETING.

THE PURPOSE OF TONIGHT'S MEETING IS FOR THE BOARD TO DELIBERATE AND VOTE ON MATTERS LISTED ON ITS AGENDA.

THE DISTRICT IS COMMITTED TO TREATING EVERYONE HERE WITH RESPECT, AND WE EXPECT THE SAME IN RETURN.

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM OUTBURSTS OR ANY OTHER DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR.

THERE WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENT LATER IN THE MEETING.

ONE PERSON HAS SIGNED UP AND THAT PERSON WILL HAVE THREE MINUTES TO SPEAK.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US AND FOR YOUR INTEREST IN OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR SCHOOLS.

WE WILL NOW BEGIN OUR AGENDA.

[5. EANES ISD MISSION STATEMENT]

AND WE'LL START WITH THE MISSION STATEMENT.

UNITE, EMPOWER, INSPIRE.

EVERY PERSON, EVERY DAY WE UNITE OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS, CREATING A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR ALL.

WE EMPOWER STUDENTS, PROVIDING AN EXEMPLARY EDUCATION THAT DEVELOPS CURIOSITY, CREATIVITY AND INDIVIDUAL TALENTS.

WE INSPIRE EACH OTHER TO LEAD PURPOSEFUL LIVES OF EMPATHY, GRATITUDE AND COMPASSION.

NOW WE WILL SAY OUR PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

TONIGHT, WE HAVE DEAN DAWSON, WHO IS A SIXTH GRADER AT WEST RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHO WILL LEAD US IN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

DEAN IS A MEMBER OF SCOUT TROOP 30.

HE HAS BEEN IN THE EANES SCHOOL DISTRICT SINCE KINDERGARTEN AT FOREST TRAIL.

THANK YOU, DEAN.

[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT]

OKAY. WE'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR.

ARNETT FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU, MR. SPRADLEY.

WELCOME, EVERYBODY. WE'VE GOT A NUMBER OF REALLY GREAT THINGS THAT WE WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU TO BEGIN TONIGHT'S MEETING.

AND I WANT TO START BY ACKNOWLEDGING A COUPLE OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE WITH US IN THE ROOM TONIGHT.

MANY OF YOU KNOW JOHN GILBREATH AND DOUG MIKULIK.

THEY ARE TRUE TREASURERS OF OUR FAMILY.

AND FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS THEY HAVE WORKED TOGETHER TO MANAGE OUR WAREHOUSE.

AND THEY ARE TRUE SERVANTS AND THEY SUPPORT ALL OF OUR STAFF.

THE ONE THING THAT I'LL MENTION ABOUT THEIR MANAGEMENT OF THE WAREHOUSE IS THAT OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS, MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE THIS.

THEY WILL THEN TAKE SURPLUS EQUIPMENT, FURNITURE, AND THEN THEY RESELL THAT AND THAT GENERATES A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF REVENUE FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.

IT'S FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT IN MOST CASES THAT WE NO LONGER NEED BECAUSE WE'VE HAD BONDS THAT HAVE BEEN SUPPORTED BY THE COMMUNITY.

AND AS WE REPLACE THOSE ITEMS, THEY THEN RESELL THEM TO OTHER UNDER-RESOURCED SCHOOLS OR COMMUNITIES, AND THAT DOES GENERATE INCOME FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SO DOUG AND JOHN, IF YOU'LL BOTH STAND AND JOHN'S WIFE, JANIE, IS WITH HIM AS WELL THIS EVENING.

BUT THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE TONIGHT.

AND THE REASON WHY WE ASK THEM BOTH TO BE HERE, NOT ONLY ARE THEY GREAT PARTNERS, BUT THIS IS ACTUALLY JOHN'S LAST DAY IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

HE IS LEAVING US TO MOVE TO NORTH CAROLINA.

HE AND JANIE ARE GOING TO BE RELOCATING THERE TO THE MOUNTAINS.

AND SO WE'RE REALLY SORRY TO SEE THEM GO.

WE HOPE THAT WE'LL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM.

BUT BEING MEMBERS OF OUR FAMILY, WE WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM ALONG WITH DOUG TONIGHT AND TO RECOGNIZE WHAT THEY'VE CONTRIBUTED TO OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TO OUR COMMUNITY.

JOHN, I THINK WE HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU, IF YOU DON'T MIND COMING UP.

AND JANIE, YOU CAN JOIN HIM.

OH, ARE YOU RUNNING OFF WITH THE BADGE? JOHN, THANKS SO MUCH SO MUCH, JANIE.

[00:05:02]

THANK YOU. SO WE'VE GOT THIS FOR YOU HERE AS A PARTING GIFT FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

AND WE WANTED THE TRUSTEES TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOU AS WELL.

AND WHILE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC OF RECOGNITIONS, WE WERE ALSO PLEASED EARLIER THIS WEEK, OUR EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT, JENNA SCOTT, WHO IS AN AP CHEMISTRY TEACHER AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL.

SHE REPRESENTED ALL OF HER COLLEAGUES BECAUSE THE CITY OF WESTLAKE HILLS PROCLAIMED OCTOBER 5TH AS WORLD TEACHERS DAY, AND THEY INVITED JENNA TO THEIR BOARD MEETING AND GAVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO NOT ONLY RECOGNIZE HER BUT RECOGNIZE ALL OF OUR OUTSTANDING TEACHERS IN EANES ISD.

AND THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL PROCLAMATION THAT THEY HAVE CREATED FOR US.

I'LL PASS THAT AROUND, BUT YOU CAN SEE A PICTURE OF IT ON THE SCREEN AS WELL.

VERY NICE. SO THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS AT THE CITY OF WESTLAKE HILLS.

AND THEN ANOTHER GREAT EVENT WAS LAST WEEK AT OUR ADULT TRANSITION SERVICES CENTER.

THEY HOSTED AN OPEN HOUSE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE WESTLAKE HILLS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, HAD A TERRIFIC TURNOUT AND GAVE A NUMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS LEADERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT OUR STUDENTS THERE COULD PROVIDE IN PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION WITH THEM IN WAYS THAT THEY MIGHT BE INVOLVED IN SOME OF THEIR BUSINESS VENTURES.

DIANE, I KNOW YOU WERE THERE AND IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR OUR COMMUNITY TO RECOGNIZE OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF AT THE ADULT TRANSITION SERVICES CENTER AND AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL LAST WEEK, THE STAFF THERE HOSTED A SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK.

YOU MAY HAVE SEEN A REALLY GREAT VIDEO THAT WAS PRODUCED BY OUR COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT FEATURING ALL OF THE GREAT PROGRAMS AND EVENTS THAT WENT ON DURING THE WEEK.

OUR STAFF, ON BEHALF OF STUDENTS THERE, MAKING SURE THAT THEY'RE TAKING CARE OF THEMSELVES.

SO THAT WAS A REALLY SPECIAL EVENT AS WELL.

COMING UP, WE HAVE A SERIES OF CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS, PART OF OUR CAFE SERIES, AND WE'LL BE VISITING ALL OF THE CAMPUSES, HAVING MEETINGS WITH PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

YOU CAN SEE THOSE DATES.

THEY'RE ALSO AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE.

AND DID WANT TO MENTION FINALLY, THERE'S STILL CONTINUED DISCUSSION IN THE COMMUNITY REGARDING VALLEY VIEW ELEMENTARY AND THE SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM.

WANT TO REITERATE WHAT WE HAVE SAID MANY TIMES OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.

WE'VE NOT MADE A DECISION YET.

IN FACT, WE'RE ACTIVELY SOLICITING PUBLIC INPUT AND LISTENING TO THOSE THOUGHTS AND FEEDBACK IDEAS THAT WE'RE GETTING FROM A NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS.

WE'LL BE REACHING OUT VIA THOUGHT EXCHANGE, WHICH WE DESCRIBED TO YOU, AND GIVING PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TELL US WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO THEM.

SO, ALL OF THOSE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS CONTINUE.

UNTIL THEN. WE'VE NOT MADE A DECISION.

THOSE DISCUSSIONS ARE ONGOING AND WE PLAN TO BRING THIS BACK TO THE BOARD AT YOUR WORKSHOP THAT'S SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 6TH.

TO TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE IN DEPTH ABOUT WHAT WE'VE LEARNED AND WHAT SOME OPTIONS AND ALTERNATIVES MAY BE.

SO THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT FOR THIS EVENING.

MR.. SPRADLEY THANK YOU.

DR. ARNETT. ANY COMMENTS? QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? OKAY. YES, HEATHER.

I JUST WANT TO SAY I WAS SAD THAT I WAS SICK AND UNABLE TO ATTEND THE EVENT AT ATS WITH THE CHAMBER.

BUT I AM SO THANKFUL FOR THIS PARTNERSHIP AND THE ABILITIES THAT AND OPPORTUNITIES IT'S GOING TO PRESENT, HOPEFULLY FOR OUR

[00:10:01]

STUDENTS AT ATS. I'M REALLY EXCITED AND THANKFUL FOR THAT.

SO, THANK YOU.

THANK YOU, HEATHER. OKAY.

[8. OPEN FORUM]

IT IS NOW TIME FOR THE OPEN FORUM PORTION OF OUR MEETING.

WE HAVE ONE SPEAKER SIGNED UP THIS EVENING AND THAT SPEAKER WILL BE AFFORDED THREE MINUTES TO SPEAK.

AND I'LL CALL YOU FORWARD WHEN IT'S YOUR TURN AND LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR TIME IS UP.

SO NOW I HAVE TO READ THREE MINUTES WORTH OF LEGAL STUFF REAL QUICK.

SO STANDBY.

ONCE YOU ARE NOTIFIED THAT YOUR TIME IS UP, PLEASE FINISH YOUR SENTENCE AND THEN STOP.

AS A GENERAL RULE, TEXAS GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 5551 PROHIBITS DISRUPTION OF BOARD MEETINGS BY THE PUBLIC.

THIS SECTION ALSO ALLOWS FOR ANY PUBLIC COMPLAINT OF SPECIFIC EMPLOYEES TO BE HEARD BY THE BOARD IN CLOSED SESSION.

IF ANY SPEAKER WISHES TO NAME A DISTRICT EMPLOYEE IN A COMPLAINT, THE DISTRICT WILL HEAR THIS COMPLAINT IN CLOSED SESSION.

SPECIFIC FACTUAL INFORMATION AND RECITATION OF EXISTING POLICY MAY BE FURNISHED IN RESPONSE TO INQUIRIES, BUT THE BOARD CANNOT DELIBERATE REGARDING ANY SUBJECT THAT IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE AGENDA.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE AUDIO OF THIS OPEN FORUM PORTION OF THE BOARD MEETING IS RECORDED AS PART OF THE RECORDING OF THE ENTIRE MEETING AND IS PUBLISHED ON THE DISTRICT'S WEBSITE. WITHOUT ALTERATION, PERSONS WHO CHOOSE TO SPEAK IN OPEN FORUM FORUM ARE CONSENTING TO THE ONLINE PUBLICATION OF THEIR COMMENTS.

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR TAKING THE TIME AND MAKING THE EFFORT TO SHARE YOUR COMMENTS.

WE ARE READY FOR OUR FIRST SPEAKER.

OUR FIRST SPEAKER TONIGHT IS TIMOTHY JORDAN.

MR. JORDAN, PLEASE COME FORWARD.

DO WE NEED TO MOVE THE MICROPHONE? TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY. STANDBY.

YES. WELL, HELLO.

AFTER ALL THAT, I FEEL KIND OF INTIMIDATED.

I DON'T HAVE A COMPLAINT.

MINE SHOULD BE SHORT AND SWEET.

I WANTED TO COME HERE TONIGHT AND THANK THE BOARD AND ANY ADMIN STAFF WHO WORKED ON THE CHANGES TO SUBSTITUTE TEACHER COMPENSATION THAT I CAME AND TALKED ABOUT LAST SPRING.

WE ASK THAT THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD FOR RETURNING SUBS BE ELIMINATED.

Y'ALL DID THAT.

I SEE THAT YOU TACKED ON A COST OF LIVING RAISE AS WELL.

THAT'S MUCH APPRECIATED.

AND I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT.

WE'RE VERY EXCITED.

A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN TO ME AS I'VE INTRODUCED MYSELF TO SOME SUBSTITUTES THAT THAT I HAVEN'T KNOWN BEFORE.

THEY A LOT OF THEM SAY, OH, YOU'RE THE ONE THAT WENT TO THE BOARD MEETING.

SO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

IT'S BEEN A REAL MORALE BOOSTER.

EVERYONE'S VERY APPRECIATIVE.

I'VE BROUGHT TWO COLLEAGUES ALONG TONIGHT.

SO RAISE YOUR HANDS. SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT.

AND IN FACT, BILL MCDAVID, WHO'S BEEN AROUND A LONG, LONG TIME, HE AND I DID A SUB JOB 20 YEARS AGO AT WEST RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL TOGETHER.

BILL WAS GOING TO RETIRE FOR GOOD LAST SPRING, AND I SHOWED UP THIS YEAR FOR MY FIRST JOB.

AND THERE WAS BILL IN THE AP OFFICE AND EVERYBODY SAYS THE SAME THING TO HIM.

BILL, WE THOUGHT YOU WERE RETIRED FOR GOOD.

AND HE SAID, WELL, THEN TIM WENT TO THE BOARD MEETING AND GOT RID OF THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

SO I DECIDED TO COME BACK FOR ONE MORE YEAR.

SO I JUST THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

WE'RE VERY APPRECIATIVE AND IT'S A GREAT MORALE BOOST FOR THE SUBSTITUTES.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MR. JORDAN. OKAY.

[9.1 Monthly Financial Report and Budget Amendment(s) for the Period Ending August 31, 2023]

WE WILL NOW MOVE INTO THE REPORTS SECTION OF OUR MEETING, MARIA, WITH THE FINANCIAL REPORT.

THERE YOU GO. GOOD EVENING.

OKAY. SO OUR FINANCIAL REPORT, KIND OF A COUPLE OF THINGS I WANTED TO POINT OUT.

AND THIS IS TYPICALLY WHAT WE SEE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR IS OUR FUND BALANCE IS JUST GOING DOWN.

AND SO THIS TYPICALLY WHAT WE SEE BECAUSE OF, OF COURSE, THE TAX YEAR.

SO WE'RE AT THE TAIL END OF THE TAX YEAR.

SO WE'VE AT THIS POINT COLLECTED BASICALLY ALL OF OUR TAXES FOR THE 2022 TAX YEAR.

AND SO WE'RE JUST SPENDING IT DOWN.

BUT THIS IS LIKE I SAID, WHAT WE EXPECT TO SEE ARE THE NEW TAX YEAR BEGINS IN OCTOBER AND WE'LL SEE THE SIGNIFICANT TAX COLLECTIONS PICK UP AGAIN IN DECEMBER AND JANUARY.

AND THEN THE FUND BALANCE, YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED FOR CAPITAL PROJECTS WENT WAY UP.

AND SO THAT WENT UP BECAUSE BONDS WERE SOLD IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST.

AND SO THERE WAS A DEPOSIT TO THOSE ACCOUNTS FOR THE 2023 BOND OF 75 MILLION.

AND THEN AS FAR AS BUDGET AMENDMENTS, WE HAD A BUDGET AMENDMENT FOR THE GENERAL FUND, NOT DEBT SERVICE AND CHILD NUTRITION DID NOT HAVE ANY.

AND AGAIN, IT WAS JUST BUDGET REVISIONS THAT WERE SUBMITTED BY CAMPUSES AND DEPARTMENTS.

AND THE NET EFFECT ON THE FUND BALANCE IS ZERO.

AND SO THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR FINANCIAL REPORTS.

[00:15:02]

ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS ON.

ANY QUESTIONS? MARIA, THANK. OH, GO AHEAD.

SO, MARIA, I JUST HAD A QUESTION AND IT'S ACTUALLY ON THIS SLIDE.

IT'S THE ROUTINE EXPENSES.

AND IT WAS JUST ONE OF CLARIFICATION.

WERE YOU GOING TO SPEAK ON THAT OR.

YEAH, SO, SO WE BOARD POLICY CH LOCAL REQUIRES ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THAT DOES IS IT GIVES THE BOARD GIVES THE AUTHORITY TO THE SUPERINTENDENT TO ENTER INTO CONTRACTS FOR RECURRING EXPENDITURES.

AND SO WHAT'S ALSO REQUIRED AS PART OF THAT POLICY IS FOR US TO REPORT, GIVE YOU A REPORT ON WHAT SOME OF THOSE EXPENDITURES WERE.

AND SO, THIS IS A SUMMARY FOR THE 2223 SCHOOL YEAR FOR THOSE RECURRING ANNUAL EXPENDITURES THAT EXCEEDED $50,000.

ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? SO NOW MY QUESTIONS.

SO, AND I DIDN'T BRING IT.

IT DIDN'T MAKE IT INTO MY BAG.

BUT I COMPARED THESE REOCCURRING EXPENSES WITH LAST YEAR'S AND WHAT I SAW AND NOW I CAN'T REMEMBER THE VENDOR, BUT LAST YEAR IN CHILD NUTRITION THERE WAS A VERY LARGE, ALMOST 500,000 OR SOMETHING FOR ONE VENDOR, AND NOW WE'VE BROKEN IT DOWN IN A NUMBER OF VENDORS. IS THERE ANY CHANGE IN OUR PROCESS AS TO WHY WE SAW? I DO I DO THINK THAT I THINK SOMETHING THAT DID HAPPEN WAS WE.

OUR CHILD NUTRITION DIRECTOR PICKED UP MORE ACTIVITY WITH BEN E.

KEITH. AND SO, THERE WERE OTHER VENDORS THAT.

SO BASICALLY, THE BUSINESS KIND OF MOVED AWAY, MOVED AWAY FROM SOME OF THOSE OTHER VENDORS.

AND SO, I THINK THERE MAY HAVE BEEN MAYBE EVEN A COUPLE THAT JUST DROPPED OFF THE LIST BECAUSE WE HAD MUCH LESS ACTIVITY WITH THEM.

BUT THERE WAS A FEW THAT WERE ADDED ON AS WELL.

SO, I THINK IT'S JUST A MATTER OF LOOKING INTO DIFFERENT VENDORS THAT ARE PROVIDING DIFFERENT THINGS FOR THE CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT.

OKAY. PROBABLY JUST A LOT MORE FOOD BEING PURCHASED.

OKAY. WELL, WHAT I SAW AND WHAT I REMEMBER WAS THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT PURCHASING FROM ONE VENDOR AND NOW IT SEEMS TO BE SPREAD OUT.

AND SO THAT WAS JUST A CURIOSITY.

NOTHING. NO COMPLAINTS, BUT A CURIOSITY.

YEAH, I DO REMEMBER. I DID I SPECIFICALLY DID ADD A COUPLE NEW ONES, LIKE 2 OR 3 NEW ONES ON THIS LIST THAT WEREN'T ON THERE LAST YEAR AND A COUPLE OF THEM DROPPED OFF AS WELL.

SO THANK YOU.

I THINK THAT'S IT.

MARIA. OH, LAURA, PLEASE, JUST REAL QUICK, JUST CLARIFICATION ON WHAT THE CITIBANK 1.1 MILLION CHARGES, STATE OF TEXAS, COMMERCIAL PURCHASING CARDS.

SO THOSE ARE OUR PURCHASING CARDS WHICH ARE USED PRIMARILY FOR TRAVEL.

SO FOR ATTENDING CONFERENCES, FOR PAYING MEMBERSHIP DUES, HOTEL COSTS, MEAL COSTS, ALL THAT'S THE PRIMARY PRIMARY USE OF THE PURCHASING CARDS.

OKAY. SO THOSE COULD GO TOWARDS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ALL THOSE TYPES OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES.

OKAY. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

OKAY. I THINK THAT'S IT.

MARIA, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THANK YOU. OKAY.

[9.2 2022-23 STAAR Results]

OUR NEXT REPORT WILL BE THE 2022-23 STAAR RESULTS.

MOLLY MAE AND KATHRYN CHERISE.

WHAT IS IT? CHINA'S.

THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING.

WE ARE HERE TODAY TO GIVE OUR ANNUAL STAR RESULTS OVERVIEW.

AND BEFORE WE START, BECAUSE I KNOW SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THAT GET ASKED EVERY YEAR, THIS IS ONE PIECE OF DATA THAT WE USE.

WE HAVE MULTIPLE ASSESSMENTS THAT WE DO BENCHMARKING.

WE JUST FINISHED OUR BEGINNING OF THE YEAR MAP ASSESSMENT.

SO, THIS IS JUST ONE PIECE OF DATA THAT WE DO USE.

WE DO FIND IT IMPORTANT YOU CAN REALLY DELVE DOWN INTO THE EXAM, INTO SPECIFIC TEKS.

WE CAN SEE WHERE SOME OF OUR KIDS ARE MISSING SPECIFIC PEAKS.

AND SO, WE USE IT, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN USE IT ON SOME LEVEL DIAGNOSTICALLY TO HELP LOOK AT WHERE OUR STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING A LITTLE BIT.

BUT AGAIN, IT'S NOT THE BE ALL END ALL, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT AND ACCOUNTABILITY, RATINGS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

THIS YEAR YOU'LL SEE THAT THE PRESENTATION WE'RE DOING IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.

EVERY YEAR WE GIVE YOU ABOUT 50 SLIDES AND IT'S A LOT AND IT'S A LOT TO TAKE IN.

AND WE'RE GOING THROUGH ALL THESE NUMBERS AND SO THAT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE TO YOU.

IT'S AVAILABLE TO ANYONE WHO IS AT HOME, AND IT'S LINKED IN THE BOARD PRESENTATION PACKET THAT HAS MORE OF THE INFORMATION.

BUT THIS YEAR WE WANTED TO JUST KIND OF FOCUS ON SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS AND THEN SOME OF THE AREAS OF FOCUS THAT WE WANT TO LOOK AT.

YOU'LL NOTICE THAT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE SPECIFIC AREAS TONIGHT, THERE'S TIMES IN EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY MAYBE WE'RE UP OR DOWN 3 OR 4 PERCENTAGE

[00:20:03]

POINTS. THOSE AREN'T THE BIG CONCERNS TO US OR THEY'RE NOT THE BIG CELEBRATIONS.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, WE REALLY WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT TONIGHT SOME OF THOSE THINGS THAT WE SAW SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF GROWTH AND THEN SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE A LITTLE BIT MORE CONCERNED ABOUT.

SO, WE'VE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE HOW IN A LOT OF OUR SCORES, YOU KNOW, WE'RE IN THE HIGH 90S AND SO IF YOU GO FROM 98 TO 96, WE DON'T REALLY WORRY.

IF WE GO FROM 92 TO 94, WE ARE HAPPY.

BUT YOU KNOW, WE ALSO THINK, YOU KNOW, THOSE LITTLE SHIFTS ARE NOT AS SIGNIFICANT TO US.

THIS YEAR. THE STAR TEST WAS DIFFERENT.

IT'S A STAAR 2.0 AND IT LOOKED VERY DIFFERENT FOR OUR STUDENTS WHERE THEY HAD MORE OPPORTUNITIES, THEY NEEDED TO ACTUALLY ANSWER A QUESTION BY TYPING IN THE ANSWER. AND THEN WE HAD QUESTIONS THAT HAD MULTIPLE ANSWERS.

AND SO IT WAS A DIFFERENT TEST.

I THINK THAT OUR STUDENTS DID VERY WELL COMPARED TO THE STATE AND INTO THE REGION.

AND THEN JUST EVEN FROM LAST YEAR, HAVING THIS TEST BE DIFFERENT.

AS YOU GUYS KNOW, IT'S NOT ALWAYS OR NEVER REALLY APPLES TO APPLES BECAUSE WHEN THE TEST CHANGES, PASSING STANDARDS CHANGE.

BUT AGAIN, WE LOOK AT KIND OF THE OVERALL HOW WE DID AND THEN REALLY DIVE DEEP INTO, OKAY, IF WE HAD AN AREA WHERE WE WEREN'T AS SUCCESSFUL, WERE THERE SPECIFIC THINGS WE CAN LOOK AT? AND CATHERINE WILL SPEAK MORE TO THAT.

THIS IS OUR ANNUAL REPORT WHERE WE DO THE STAR.

WE ALSO TYPICALLY AROUND THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, ARE GIVING YOU OUR ACCOUNTABILITY RATINGS.

AS YOU GUYS KNOW, THOSE ARE SUPPOSED TO COME OUT NEXT MONTH AT THE END OF THIS MONTH.

THEY ARE NOT. SO WE'LL JUST WAIT AND SEE WHEN THAT HAPPENS.

WE ARE EXPECTING THE TAPER REPORT TO STILL COME OUT IN LATE PROBABLY LATE FALL, JANUARY, DECEMBER OR JANUARY.

SO, I'M NOW GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO CATHERINE TO START WALKING YOU THROUGH.

OH, YOU WANT THE CLICKER? HELLO. THE STAAR STUDENT PERFORMANCE LEVELS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THEY'VE BEEN IN THE PAST, EVEN THOUGH THE TEST HAS CHANGED A LITTLE BIT.

SO DID NOT MEET MEANS THE STUDENT DID NOT MEET GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS AND IT'S CONSIDERED NOT PASSING.

APPROACHES MEANS THAT STUDENTS ARE MISSING SOME GRADE LEVEL SKILLS IN THAT CONTENT AREA, BUT IT'S STILL CONSIDERED PASSING.

SO WHEN YOU SEE US REPORT ABOUT APPROACHES, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT STUDENTS WHO ARE CONSIDERED PASSING.

AND FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THE MEETS CATEGORY, THAT MEANS THAT THEY ARE ON LEVEL IN THAT CONTENT AREA FOR THE GRADE LEVEL.

AND FINALLY, FOR MASTERS, IT IS ABOVE LEVEL AND IT'S ALSO CONSIDERED COLLEGE READY.

SO THAT DOES HELP WITH OUR CCMR AND SOME OF OUR INDICATORS FOR OUR ELEMENTARY.

OKAY. OKAY.

DO IT. OKAY.

YEAH. SORRY. I DON'T THINK THAT'S WORKING.

OKAY. SO WE'RE HAPPY TO REPORT THAT LAST YEAR OUR FOCUS, ONE OF THE AREAS WAS FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE.

AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WE INCREASED AT ALL PERFORMANCE LEVELS, EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS A DIFFERENT TEST.

AND STUDENTS WERE EXPECTED TO PROVIDE MORE CONSTRUCTIVE RESPONSES, WHICH MEANS THAT THEY GIVE AN ANSWER.

AND IT'S NOT JUST MULTIPLE CHOICE.

LAST YEAR WE DID SOME WORK ON CURRICULUM FOCUS, AND TEACHERS OVER THIS PAST SUMMER WERE PROVIDED TRAINING ON OUR STEM SCOPES AND ALSO WORKED ON SCOPE AND SEQUENCE WITH MANY OF THE TEACHERS.

THE CAMPUSES ARE CONTINUING TO DO PLC WORK IN THIS AREA, SO WE'RE STILL CONTINUING TO MOVE FORWARD WITH OUR FOCUS ON SCIENCE AND IN OUR SIXTH. OH, GO AHEAD.

TRY THE CLICKER. THANK YOU.

SO WE HAVE SOME HIGHLIGHTS AS FAR AS OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL READING GOES.

SO FOR SIXTH GRADE READING, WE HAD AN INCREASE AT ALL LEVELS, BUT ESPECIALLY MEETS, WHICH MEANS THAT STUDENTS HAVE THOSE GRADE LEVEL SKILLS.

AND FOR OUR SEVENTH GRADE, SAME THING, AN INCREASE.

WE HAD 91% OF OUR STUDENTS IN SEVENTH GRADE READING AT THE MEETS LEVEL.

SO WE REALLY WANT TO CELEBRATE OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL READING LANGUAGE ARTS TEAMS. AND FOR OUR EIGHTH GRADE WE HAD AN INCREASE IN OUR MEETS LEVEL.

SO AFTER EIGHTH GRADE, OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS ARE SENDING 92% OF THE STUDENTS TO HIGH SCHOOL, AT LEAST LAST YEAR'S CLASS.

THEY'RE READING AT LEVEL, SO THEY ARE ON GRADE LEVEL WHEN THEY ENTER NINTH GRADE.

OUR ENGLISH ONE IS AN END OF COURSE EXAM.

SO STUDENTS IN THEIR NINTH GRADE YEAR TAKE ENGLISH ONE AND THEN AT THE END, TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR, THEY TAKE THIS EXAM.

[00:25:08]

YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAD AN INCREASE AT ALL LEVELS.

THIS WAS REALLY FOCUSED WORK WITH CIA AND WE WORKED WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL EAP TO IDENTIFY AREAS OF GROWTH AND THE ENGLISH ONE TEAM DID SOME PLC WORK AROUND THIS. THE TEAM FOR ENGLISH ONE ALSO WORKED ON SOME INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR ENGLISH ONE TO REALLY HELP THOSE STUDENTS SO YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY INCREASED ACROSS THE BOARD. AND OUR ENGLISH TOO.

WE HAD AN INCREASE ACROSS THE BOARD, BUT ESPECIALLY IN OUR MASTER'S PERFORMANCE LEVEL.

IT WAS VERY FOCUSED CURRICULUM WORK FROM OUR TEAM WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL PARTNER AND HE WORKED WITH THE ENGLISH TO PLC TEAM.

THEY WORKED ON INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES AND ALIGNING THAT CURRICULUM FOR ALL OF THOSE ENGLISH TWO CLASSES SO THAT STUDENTS COULD MEET THOSE TARGETS.

ENGLISH TWO IS A CLASS THAT'S TAKEN BY 10TH GRADERS, BY THE WAY.

SO MOSTLY 10TH GRADERS ARE TAKING THAT EOC.

AND FOR ALGEBRA ONE, THIS ONE IS ALWAYS INTERESTING BECAUSE WE HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF STUDENTS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL WHO ARE TAKING ALGEBRA ONE.

SO AT HILL COUNTRY, WE HAD OVER 250 STUDENTS TAKING ALGEBRA ONE, AND THAT'S ACROSS SIX, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE.

AND WE HAD ABOUT 150 AT WEST RIDGE AND THEN ABOUT 250 AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

SO MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ENTER WESTLAKE AND THEY'VE ALREADY TAKEN ALGEBRA ONE.

BUT WE DO HAVE A NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKING ALGEBRA ONE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND THE CURRICULUM TEAM IS DOING WORK WITH THEM.

AND ALSO A LOT OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKING THE ALGEBRA ONE, THEY ARE ON LEVEL STUDENTS.

SO, WE'RE CONTINUING TO DIFFERENTIATE INSTRUCTION FOR STUDENTS AND REALLY TRY TO MEET THEIR NEEDS AND HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL.

AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAD AN INCREASE IN OUR APPROACHES AND MEETS LEVELS AND MASTERS TO.

SO NEXT, WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT AREAS OF FOCUS.

AND WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE IS OUR THIRD GRADE.

AND JUST A COUPLE POINTS OF WE'RE DIVING INTO ALL OF THIS.

BUT ONE THING IS THESE ARE OUR KINDERGARTNERS.

SO, YOU KNOW, THEY LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OR THEY LEFT IN MARCH OF THEIR CALENDAR YEAR.

SOME OF THEM WERE REMOTE DURING FIRST GRADE.

YOU KNOW, WE HAVE OTHER DATA TO SUPPORT THAT.

THOSE STUDENTS ARE, YOU KNOW, MAKING GOOD PROGRESS WITH MAP AND OTHER ASSESSMENTS.

BUT, YOU KNOW, IT'S AN AREA OF CONCERN AND IT'S A GRADE LEVEL TO BE TO BE LOOKING AT.

THE OTHER PIECE OF THIS IS, AGAIN, THIS IS WHILE THEY'VE NEVER TESTED BEFORE, SO THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT A STAAR TEST WAS.

THEY WERE THE FIRST GROUP OF THIRD GRADERS WHO THEN HAD TO COME IN AND TYPE THEIR RESPONSES.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, A COUPLE OF US WERE AT A PRESENTATION AND, YOU KNOW, ARE THE STUDENTS STRUGGLING TO TYPE OR ARE THEY STRUGGLING TO KNOW THE CONTENT? AND THAT IS A DIFFICULT QUESTION TO ANSWER.

AND SO, YES, WE DO WORK ON TYPING, BUT, YOU KNOW, WE'RE REALLY FOCUSED ON SOME OTHER SKILLS IN THIRD GRADE.

SO, YOU KNOW, IT'S SOMETHING ACROSS THE BOARD, ACROSS THE STATE THAT PEOPLE SAW WITH THE THIRD GRADE.

BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT WE'RE JUST GOING TO SAY, OH, YOU KNOW, THESE ARE THE REASONS AND MOVE ON.

WE'RE GOING TO STILL REALLY MAKE SURE WE'RE LOOKING AT THOSE KIDDOS AND FOCUSING ON THEM.

SO I'LL LET CATHERINE KIND OF TALK ABOUT THE DATA.

SURE. SO THIRD GRADE READING, WE ARE WORKING WITH THE CAMPUSES TO HIGHLIGHT OPPORTUNITIES.

SO THE CAMPUS PRINCIPALS HAVE LOOKED AT THE DATA AND LOOKED AT WHERE STUDENTS MAYBE WEREN'T AS STRONG AND THE EPS AND THE PLC TEAM FOR THIRD GRADE ACROSS THE DISTRICT ARE JUST CONTINUING TO WORK ON THAT CURRICULAR ALIGNMENT AND THEY'RE LOOKING FOR AREAS OF INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS WITH THOSE STUDENTS.

SO JUST REALLY LOOKING AT THE DATA AND TALKING ABOUT WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP WITH THIS.

AND FOR OUR MATH, WE'RE CONTINUING TO DO WITH STEM SCOPES, THE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE.

AND THE CIA TEAM IS WORKING WITH THE CAMPUSES.

WE'RE LOOKING AT THE DATA AND AREAS WHERE STUDENTS MIGHT HAVE PERFORMED A LITTLE BIT LOWER.

AND WE'RE CONTINUING TO ALIGN THAT CURRICULUM ACROSS THE THIRD GRADE TEAM IN THE DISTRICT.

I JUST WANT TO MENTION, TOO, TO REITERATE THAT WE ARE USING THE BODY MAP DATA FOR READING AND FOR MATH.

AND SO THAT TELLS US EXACTLY THE SKILLS THAT STUDENTS MIGHT BE LOWER IN OR WHERE THEIR STRENGTHS ARE.

SO IT GIVES US A REALLY GOOD PICTURE OF WHERE THE STUDENT IS RIGHT NOW.

CATHERINE, JUST TO CLARIFY.

BOY OH, BEGINNING OF YEAR.

SORRY. OUR BEGINNING OF YEAR STUDENTS TAKE THE MAP, TEST ITS BEGINNING OF YEAR.

BOY, MY MIDDLE OF YEAR AND THEN END OF YEAR.

AND YOU'LL SEE THOSE DATES ON OUR DISTRICT TESTING CALENDARS.

SO, IF YOU SEE THAT STUDENTS IN SEVERAL GRADES ARE TAKING THOSE TESTS AND IT REALLY DOES GIVE US A GOOD PICTURE OF WHERE THE STUDENTS ARE WITH THE SKILLS.

[00:30:11]

THREE. WE'RE CONTINUING TO WORK WITH THE PLCS TO INCORPORATE AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT IN THE CURRICULUM.

THE MASTERS, WE HAD A DIP, JUST A LITTLE DIP, AND WE'RE JUST MONITORING THAT.

SO WE'RE DOING THAT PLC WORK AND WE'RE JUST MONITORING THAT MASTER'S.

KEEP IN MIND, THE MASTER'S IS THAT LEVEL IS CONSIDERED COLLEGE READY? YEAH. SO THIS IS ANOTHER ONE WHERE YOU LOOK AT I MEAN, WE'RE 99% IN APPROACHES AND STILL 96% IN MEET.

SO WE'RE NOT OVERLY CONCERNED.

BUT WHEN YOU DO SEE A DIP IN ONE AREA, YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE CHALLENGING THOSE STUDENTS WHO NEED TO BE CHALLENGED.

AND, YOU KNOW, LOOKING AT THAT MASTER'S LEVEL AND GETTING THOSE STUDENTS WHERE THEY NEED TO BE BECAUSE WE DON'T LIKE TO SEE THAT BIG OF A PERCENTAGE DROP.

SO THOSE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS.

AGAIN, THE SCORES THAT WE DIDN'T INCLUDE IN HERE, WHICH ARE MANY, ARE REALLY SCORES THAT LOOKED VERY SIMILAR FROM YEAR TO YEAR AND THAT WE DIDN'T SEE A SIGNIFICANT EITHER INCREASE OR DECREASE.

BUT OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF DATA IN THAT IN THAT PACKET.

QUESTIONS BOARD.

ELLEN. THANK YOU.

YOU KNOW HOW I LOVE THIS.

I KNOW YOU DO. AND WE LOVE BEING HERE.

YES. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE ELEMENTARY SCIENCE.

I MEAN, I KNOW THAT THAT WAS A REAL PAIN POINT.

SO CONGRATULATIONS ON EVOLUTION THERE AS WELL AS ENGLISH, TOO, GIVEN THAT WE.

WE HAVE OBJECTIVES FOR VIRTUALLY ALL OF OUR STUDENTS TO BE COLLEGE AND CAREER READY WHEN THEY GRADUATE.

IT'S GREAT TO SEE THAT THEY ARE ACHIEVING AT THAT MASTER'S LEVEL AT ENGLISH TOO.

AND I'M KIND OF BLOWN AWAY BY THE ALGEBRA ONE.

YES, I REMEMBER THE DAY WHEN ALGEBRA ONE WAS THE MOST FAILED COURSE AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL.

AND SO TO BE AT THOSE LEVELS ACROSS ALL THREE CATEGORIES IS IS VERY IMPRESSIVE.

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIRD GRADE, SO I'M GLAD YOU HIGHLIGHTED THAT.

DO YOU THINK THAT THE NEW FORMAT.

IS PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT FOR EARLY LEARNERS.

COULD THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO IT AS WELL? I DO, DEFINITELY.

YEAH, I.

THINKING FOR ADULTS, I THINK IT'S SOMETIMES HARD TO COME UP WITH THE PARAGRAPH ANSWER, IF YOU WILL, VERSUS THE MULTIPLE CHOICE.

AND IF YOU THINK ABOUT TWO, TYPICALLY, I MEAN, WE'RE HAVING TO SHIFT OUR INSTRUCTION, BUT TYPICALLY, TYPICALLY A THIRD GRADER IS WRITING ON A PIECE OF PAPER THAT MAY HAVE LINES THAT MAY BE BIGGER.

YOU KNOW, IT'S THEY'RE STILL WORKING ON SOME OF THOSE FINE MOTOR SKILLS AND WRITING.

ALL THOSE PROCESSES WORK TOGETHER.

SO, I THINK THEN ASKING THEM TO CREATE A RESPONSE AND TYPE IT IN, I THINK IS DIFFICULT.

AND I THINK WE SAW THAT WITH OUR STUDENTS WHERE THEY WRITING THE ESSAY WAS A LITTLE CHALLENGING.

THEY MISSED SOME JUST MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS THAT WE CAN TIE BACK TO TEAK.

SO, WE'RE NOT GOING TO SAY IT'S ALL THE TEST FORMAT, BUT WE DO THINK THAT THAT PLAYED A PART IN IT.

WELL, THAT WAS GOING TO BE MY NEXT QUESTION IS DID YOU SEE PARTICULARLY WITH THIRD GRADE, DID YOU SEE IT CONCENTRATED IN CERTAIN CONCEPTS THAT MAYBE JUST THERE WASN'T TIME TO TEACH OR WAS THERE JUST A LOT OF VARIABILITY ACROSS THE BOARD WHICH WOULD SPEAK MORE TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS? SO FOR THE THIRD GRADE, WE SAW ACROSS CAMPUSES THE SAME AREAS.

SO THAT'S WHY THE CURRICULUM TEAM WANTS TO REALLY WORK WITH HAVING THAT ALIGNMENT AND ALSO HAVING THAT PLC SO THAT ALL THE TEACHERS ACROSS THE DISTRICT AT THAT GRADE LEVEL CAN REALLY TALK AND COLLABORATE AND SHARE.

BUT WE DID SEE SOME OF THE SAME AREAS WERE MISSED AND OUR STUDENTS DID TAKE THE TEST A LITTLE BIT EARLIER.

TYPICALLY THEY'RE TESTING IN MAY, BUT LAST YEAR WE TESTED IN APRIL AND IT'S GOING TO BE IT WAS ACTUALLY EARLY APRIL.

IT'S GOING TO BE THE SAME THING MID APRIL THIS YEAR.

SO WHEN THEY WERE WORKING ON SCOPE AND SEQUENCE, TOO, THEY TRIED TO ADJUST THOSE AREAS TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS HAD THAT EXPOSURE, AND IT WASN'T A TEK THAT THEY MAYBE WEREN'T GETTING UNTIL MAY.

THANK YOU. YOU'RE WELCOME.

SHIFTING GEARS TO THE US HISTORY.

TALKING ABOUT CURRICULUM, UNCERTAINTY OF CONCEPT.

I THINK SOCIAL STUDIES, PARTICULARLY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, HAS BEEN A CHALLENGING CURRICULUM AREA OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

DO YOU THINK THAT THAT IS AGAIN, DID YOU SEE A LOT OF VARIATION OF WHAT MAY BE CAUSING THE SLIGHT DECLINE IN THE

[00:35:06]

MASTER'S LEVEL, OR WAS THAT CONSISTENT CONCEPTS THAT PERHAPS WERE NOT? SO IT WAS CONSISTENT CONCEPTS, BUT JUST REALLY LOOKING AT THE FORMAT OF THE QUESTIONS AND MAKING SURE THAT WE PREPARE THE STUDENTS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE QUESTIONS WILL ASK STUDENTS TO COMPARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, MAYBE TWO DIFFERENT PIECES OF TEXT.

SO IT'S JUST REALLY A DIFFERENT FORMAT AND A SHIFT IN THE INSTRUCTION AND THE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES TOO.

OKAY. THANK YOU. YOU'RE WELCOME.

THANK YOU. WE'LL GO TO JEN AND THEN KIM.

THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH.

I THINK ELLEN COVERED MAJORITY OF WHAT I WANTED.

THAT'S TOTALLY FINE.

AND THANK YOU FOR POINTING OUT THAT THIS IS REALLY ONLY ONE DATA POINT FOR US.

BUT I THINK SOME OF ELLEN'S QUESTIONS AND YOUR ANSWERS SHOW THAT THIS DOES GIVE US SOME VALUABLE DATA THAT YOU GUYS CAN USE GOING FORWARD.

SO, I APPRECIATE YOU ANALYZING IT AND TAKING IT SERIOUSLY.

I WAS VERY HAPPY TO SEE THE INCREASE IN SCIENCE AND WE WERE, TOO.

I KNOW EVERYBODY WAS NOT JUST NOT JUST US UP HERE.

AND WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE TO KIND OF CARRY FORWARD THE WORK THAT YOU STARTED? DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO KIND OF CHANGE OR EVOLVE THAT? OR WHAT DO YOU ENVISION? SO THE TEAM FOR THE CURRICULUM SIDE, THEY'RE CONTINUING TO WORK WITH THOSE TEACHERS AND SUPPORT THEM AND HELP THEM WITH THE STEM SCOPES BECAUSE THAT'S A NEW AREA FOR THEM. BUT THEY ALSO HAVE PERIODIC ASSESSMENTS TOO.

AND THAT'S I DON'T WANT TO SAY A NEW PIECE, BUT THE ALIGNMENT OF EVERYBODY DOING THAT SPOT CHECK THROUGHOUT.

AND WE'RE CONTINUING TO LOOK AT IT.

AND I KNOW THAT AMY WILLIAMS IS CONTINUING TO GET TEACHER FEEDBACK AND THEY'RE CONTINUING TO WORK ON SCIENCE.

SO THEY'RE GOING TO KEEP THAT AS A FOCUS, ONE OF OUR FOCUS AREAS MOVING FORWARD.

THAT'S GOOD. AND THEN I'M FORGETTING WHERE WE LEFT THIS OFF.

BUT I BELIEVE THERE'S NO STANDARD TYPE OF TESTING WE DO IN GRADES BELOW FIFTH GRADE FOR SCIENCE, CORRECT? CORRECT. CORRECT. HAVE WE IMPLEMENTED SOMETHING SO THAT WE CAN MONITOR THOSE GRADES COMING UP SO THAT, YOU KNOW, WE'RE NOT IN THIS PINCH AGAIN, WHERE ALL OF A SUDDEN SOMETHING BUBBLES UP? YEAH, WE'RE DOING SOME JUST KIND OF LOCALLY DEVELOPED BENCHMARKING TO MAKE TO KIND OF CALIBRATE ALONG THE WAY TO YOUR POINT TO MAKE SURE WE DON'T GET TO FIFTH GRADE BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE FIFTH-GRADE TEST IS NOT JUST FIFTH GRADE MATERIAL.

AND SO, WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE KIND OF DOING THOSE PERIODIC CHECKS THAT THE OTHER GRADES, THERE'S NOTHING FORMAL, BUT WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, OUR LOCALLY DEVELOPED BENCHMARKING.

I THINK THAT'S GREAT AND I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE EFFORT YOU AND THE ENTIRE TEAM HAVE PUT INTO THIS.

AND LIKE ELLEN, I'M THRILLED WITH WITH THE READING AND THE ENGLISH SCORES, THAT'S JUST FANTASTIC.

YOU KNOW, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT A DISTRICT LIKE OURS THAT'S ALREADY SO ACADEMICALLY STRONG, AND THEN WE SEE IMPROVEMENTS LIKE THAT, IT'S PRETTY IMPRESSIVE.

AND THEN I APPRECIATE YOUR FOCUS ON THIRD GRADE AND KEEPING THAT KEEPING THAT FOCUS GOING FORWARD.

I THINK IT'S TRULY LIKE ONE OF THOSE UNIQUE GRADES THAT WILL PROBABLY NEED TO KIND OF FOLLOW FOR A REALLY LONG TIME AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE ON TRACK.

AND I THINK ELLEN ANSWERED OR ASKED MOST OF MY QUESTIONS.

DO YOU SEE ANY? YOU SEE ANY DISCREPANCY BETWEEN.

THE MAPS DATA AND THE STAR DATA, ARE YOU SEEING KIND OF THE SIMILAR AREAS OF NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT? SO THEY ARE VERY WELL ALIGNED.

THE CAMPUSES AND I AND OUR TEAM LOOKED AT WHERE STUDENTS FELL AND WHAT SKILLS THEY NEEDED.

SO, WE DID THAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR AT THE ASSESSMENT AND WE WORKED WITH THE TEACHERS AND TOLD THEM, OKAY, THESE ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO REALLY HELP PUSH THE STUDENTS FORWARD AND REALLY FOCUS ON THE SKILLS THAT THEY HAD THAT YOU WOULD CALL BUBBLE SKILLS.

THEY'RE ALMOST RIGHT THERE AND JUST BOOST THEM UP.

SO YES, WE HAVE WE USE THAT DATA, AND IT IS A PRETTY GOOD INDICATOR.

OKAY. YEAH, THAT'S GREAT.

I THINK THAT'S SUPER HELPFUL FOR DISCERNING, YOU KNOW, WHICH ARE AREAS WE NEED TO FOCUS ON VERSUS, YOU KNOW, THE NEWNESS OF THE TEST OR THE TYPE OF TEST. YEAH.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. THANK YOU, JEN.

WE'LL GO TO KIM AND THEN HEATHER.

THANK YOU BOTH FOR THIS.

BOTH ELLEN AND JEN'S QUESTIONS REALLY COVERED WHAT I HAD LOOKED AT FROM A THIRD-GRADE PERSPECTIVE.

SO, THANK YOU. AND I THINK WHAT I GOT, OR I WAS GOING TO FRAME MY QUESTION ON THIRD GRADE JUST A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY.

[00:40:02]

I THINK YOU ANSWERED IT, THOUGH, CATHERINE, ON HOW EXAMPLES OF HOW YOU LOOK AT BEGINNING OF YEAR AND THEN MIDDLE AND END IN THE MAP TESTING AND HOW YOU HOW YOUR TEACHERS IMPROVE AND ADDRESS ANY KIND OF CHALLENGES THAT THEY SEE.

SO I LOVE THAT EXAMPLE AND THANK YOU.

THE OTHER QUESTION THAT I HAD WAS ON END OF COURSE, SCHEDULE OR END OF COURSE TESTING.

AND I KNOW YOU RAISED THE CHALLENGE AND THEN I'M ASSUMING THAT MEANS AND THIS IS REALLY FOR THE COMMUNITY, I SAW SOME DATA, BUT THAT MEANS THAT WHILE WE'RE LOOKING AT US HISTORY BECAUSE WE SAW A DIP, THE OTHER END, OF COURSE, TESTING THAT WE DO AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL DOESN'T CONCERN YOU AT THIS POINT. AND IT'S STAYING ON COURSE AND IT'S STAYING AT THOSE HIGH LEVELS THAT WE SEE ON A REGULAR BASIS.

SO THE ONLY ONE WE DIDN'T HIGHLIGHT TONIGHT WAS BIOLOGY.

WE TYPICALLY PERFORM REALLY WELL IN BIOLOGY.

WE CONTINUE TO PERFORM VERY WELL IN BIOLOGY.

WE'RE ACTUALLY VERY IMPRESSED.

WE HAD A BRAND NEW BIOLOGY TEAM LAST YEAR.

EVERYONE IN THAT DEPARTMENT WAS NEW AND OUR SCORES WERE JUST AS HIGH AS THEY'VE BEEN.

SO WE WERE VERY, VERY GLAD TO SEE THAT BRINGING IN A NEW TEAM.

SO IT JUST SHOWS THAT A LOT OF THE CURRICULUM WORK THAT WAS ALREADY DONE WAS VERY STABLE.

THAT'S FANTASTIC. THANK YOU.

THAT'S WHAT I HAD. THANK YOU, KIM.

HEATHER, THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THAT.

THIS IS JUST ONE PIECE OF THE PUZZLE FOR YOU, HEATHER.

I APPRECIATE IT. AND I JUST ALWAYS HAVE TO MENTION THAT I THINK THAT THE PERFORMANCE LEVELS ARE SO UNFAIR BECAUSE APPROACHES MEANS THEY ARE ON GRADE LEVEL MEETS MEANS THEY ARE ABOVE AVERAGE, AND MASTERS MEANS THAT THEIR COLLEGE LEVEL OR COLLEGE READY.

SO I JUST THINK THAT THAT'S CONFUSING TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT.

I DO ALSO WANT TO MAKE NOTE THAT THE COMMISSIONER SPOKE TO THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, AND HE ACTUALLY SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF DOES OUR THIRD GRADE OR DO OUR THIRD GRADERS IN THE STATE HAVE A TYPING ISSUE OR A READING ISSUE? SO IT WAS NOT JUST US CLEARLY THAT HAD THAT ISSUE.

BUT SO I DON'T KNOW IF MAYBE WE WILL HAVE PROPOSED TYPING TWEAKS IN THE FUTURE OR IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO LOOK INTO SO THAT WE CAN BETTER PREPARE OUR STUDENTS TO TAKE THE STAR, WHICH SEEMS WHATEVER, BUT TYPING THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING ON KEYBOARDING.

SO IT IS DEFINITELY IN THE CURRICULUM FOR THEM TO BE WORKING ON.

BUT YEAH, RIGHT.

AND I KNOW THE READING SECTION TOO WAS ONE OF THE SECTIONS THAT CHANGED THE MOST DRASTICALLY AND THEY EVEN ADDED SOME MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS OR ANSWERS THAT WERE THE SAME, OR THEY WERE BOTH CORRECT, WHICH IS ALSO CONFUSING AND NEW TO OUR KIDDOS WHO AREN'T USED TO THAT.

YES. SO IT'S KIND OF A GOTCHA IN MY OPINION.

BUT WHATEVER. I DO HAVE QUESTIONS THOUGH.

SO ONE, I WOULD BE CURIOUS AND SOME OF THIS DATA I KNOW YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE TONIGHT, BUT I WOULD BE CURIOUS TO SEE AT SOME POINT, CURIOUS TO SEE IF WE HAVE DATA ON HOW MANY OF OUR KIDS THAT DON'T GET MASTERED THAT GO TO COLLEGE SUCCESSFULLY, BECAUSE I THINK IT'S MOST OF THEM A HIGH NUMBER.

WE PREPARE A LOT OF STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE.

YES. THANK YOU. YES. OUR COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE RATE IS VERY HIGH.

SO I THINK THAT THAT'S MISLEADING IN THAT, TOO.

BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT.

AND THEN DID WE SEE ANY DIFFERENCE WITH OUR STUDENTS WHO TESTED ONLINE, WHO HAVE ALWAYS TESTED ON PAPER? BECAUSE I KNOW WE DID NOT DO PAPER TESTING THIS YEAR, AND I KNOW THAT NEXT YEAR THAT THAT WILL BE I THINK WE HAVE UP TO 3% OF OUR POPULATION THAT WILL BE ALLOWED TO REQUEST PAPER.

SO, I'D BE CURIOUS TO SEE IF THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE THERE.

AND THEN MY OTHER LAST QUESTION IS, DID WE SEE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE ANXIETY LEVEL OF OUR STUDENTS WHILE THEY WERE TAKING THIS TEST OR FEEDBACK FROM STAFF AND STUDENTS AFTER THEY TOOK THE NEW TEST, JUST TO KIND OF GAUGE IF IT WAS MORE RELAXED OR MAYBE MORE STRESSFUL FOR OUR STUDENTS? BECAUSE I THINK I NEVER WANT TO PUT OUR STUDENTS AND I KNOW YOU GUYS FEEL THE SAME WAY.

OUR STAFF NEVER WANTS TO PUT OUR STUDENTS IN A POSITION WHERE THEY ARE FEELING UNDUE STRESS OVER AN EXAM WHERE THEY SHOULD JUST BE LIKE, IT'S ANOTHER DAY.

SO I'D BE CURIOUS TO KNOW ABOUT THAT.

I THINK WE DID SEE NOT SIGNIFICT, BUT SOME DISTRICTS SAW VERY SIGNIFICANT TIME GAP OR HOW LONG IT TOOK THEM TO FINISH.

I THINK WE SAW KIND OF A MINOR, YOU KNOW, EXTRA TIME THAT IT TOOK, BUT NOT AS SIGNIFICANT AS SOME OTHER SOME OTHER PLACES BECAUSE WE WERE HEARING BEFORE WE HAD SOME TESTING BEFORE US AND ABOUT HEARING LIKE FIVE, SIX HOUR TESTS FOR ELEMENTARY THAT IT WAS TAKING HIM THAT LONG TO FINISH.

WE DIDN'T SEE THAT.

BUT I WOULD SAY WE SAW A LITTLE BIT OF AN INCREASE IN HOW LONG IT TOOK.

AS FAR AS THE ANXIETY, I DON'T KNOW.

BUT, YOU KNOW, ANY TIME YOU'RE TAKING LONGER TO TEST, THAT CAN BE STRESSFUL.

[00:45:03]

RIGHT. AND I THOUGHT LIKE ONE OF THE REASONS WE WENT ONLINE WAS BECAUSE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SHORTER TEST.

SO, IT'S IN FACT, BEEN THE OPPOSITE.

SO THAT'S INTERESTING.

WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I APPRECIATE THIS DEEP DIVE.

THANK YOU. HEATHER. DIANE.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

IT'S FANTASTIC TO SEE THE AREAS WHERE YOU CAN LOOK AT WHERE YOU PUT EFFORT AND YOU'VE SEEN THOSE THOSE AREAS OF GROWTH.

SO AS EVERYONE ELSE HAS SORT OF MENTIONED, THANK YOU FOR POINTING THAT OUT.

I HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.

IN THE ALGEBRA ONE END, OF COURSE, TESTING.

YOU BROKE DOWN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT ARE IN THE DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS.

HAVE YOU LOOKED FURTHER TO SEE IF THE STUDENTS ARE PERFORMING DIFFERENTLY IN THOSE GRADE LEVELS? ARE THE MORE ADVANCED MATH STUDENTS PERFORMING BETTER? JUST CURIOUS. SO FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS WHERE THOSE STUDENTS TYPICALLY ARE THERE, THEY'RE SIXTH GRADE, SEVENTH GRADE OR EIGHTH GRADE, THERE IS A 100% PASSING RATE LAST YEAR AND THEN 99% PASSING RATE THE YEAR BEFORE.

SO WITH ALGEBRA ONE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, VERY FEW OF THE STUDENTS FALL INTO THAT DID NOT MEET CATEGORY WE DO HAVE.

SO IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE MATH COURSES, YOU MIGHT WALK INTO THE ALGEBRA ONE CLASS AND HAVE A CLASS FULL OF SIXTH GRADE, SEVENTH GRADE AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS.

SO THERE ARE A NUMBER OF STUDENTS AT ALL THREE OF THOSE GRADE LEVELS THAT ARE ACCELERATING.

BUT FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TAKING THAT TEST, IT IS A 100% PASSING RATE.

WHAT ABOUT THE MASTERY LEVEL? DO YOU SEE VARIATIONS BETWEEN THE GRADES? SO I WOULD NEED TO GO BACK AND LOOK, I DON'T HAVE THE SPECIFIC DATA FOR THE BREAKDOWN OF SIXTH, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE, BUT TYPICALLY THOSE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE ON THAT ACCELERATED PATH DO VERY WELL.

OKAY. AND THEN I'M JUST CURIOUS.

I UNDERSTAND THAT I BELIEVE A YEAR AGO YOU DID MENTION A LITTLE BIT MORE REFERENCE TO MORE HISTORICAL DATA.

COULD YOU JUST SPEAK PRETTY BRIEFLY ABOUT HOW ARE WE LOOKING IN 2023 COMPARED TO PRIOR TO COVID? IS THERE A FAIR STATEMENT TO BE MADE THERE? YEAH. I MEAN, I THINK THAT WE ARE VERY CLOSE, IF NOT SURPASSING WHERE WE WERE IF WE LOOK BACK AT 2019.

SO IF YOU REMEMBER, THERE WASN'T A TEST IN 2020 AND 2021, OUR SCORES LIKE EVERYONE ELSE'S, WERE THEY WERE THEY WERE A LOT LOWER.

BUT WE ALSO HAD FEWER STUDENTS TESTING.

YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO TEST THAT YEAR.

SO 2021 WAS KIND OF AN INTERESTING YEAR.

SO, LAST YEAR WAS KIND OF LIKE BACK TO NORMAL AND WE WERE STILL VERY CLOSE TO THOSE 2019 TEST RESULTS.

AND THEN THIS YEAR, BECAUSE WE REALLY SAW A LOT OF INCREASES, I WOULD SAY THAT WE'RE VERY, VERY CLOSE, IF NOT SURPASSING, HOWEVER, REMEMBERING THAT THE TEST IN 2019 ISN'T THE TEST IN 2023.

SO AGAIN, IT'S YOU'RE STILL NOT COMPARING APPLES TO APPLES.

BUT, YOU KNOW, WE FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE AND VERY CONFIDENT THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE IN A REALLY GOOD PLACE, THAT SOME OF THESE COVID GAPS WE REALLY FEEL LIKE WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, AMELIORATED THE EFFECTS OF COVID ON THERE.

BUT WE ARE, AGAIN, MAKING SURE WE'RE LOOKING AT THOSE LITTLE THIRD GRADERS, BECAUSE I THINK THAT'S YOU KNOW, THAT'S JUST AN INTERESTING THAT AN INTERESTING START.

SO FOR SURE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? OKAY. I WOULD JUST REAL QUICK, NO QUESTION FROM ME.

BUT I WOULD SAY ON THAT THIRD GRADE READING, IF IT'S A TYPING PROBLEM, I WOULD HAVE EXPECTED THAT DROP OFF IN ALL THREE LEVELS IN APPROACHES MEETS AND MASTERS.

SO JAMES'S THEORY IS THERE'S A FLAW IN THEIR TEST.

THERE'S SOME PROBLEM WHERE THEY'RE SORTING THESE KIDS INTO MORE AND MORE COMPLICATED QUESTIONS THAN WHEN THEY'RE GETTING TO THOSE MASTERS QUESTIONS.

THERE'S SOME BREAK THERE.

SO HOPEFULLY THE STATE WILL FIX THAT BECAUSE I LIKE TO SEE THESE SCORES COMPARE TO OTHER DISTRICTS I LIKE TO SEE.

YOU SEE THAT FALL OFF IN MULTIPLE DISTRICTS.

THERE'S A PROBLEM ON THE TEST SIDE.

BUT OTHER THAN THAT, NO, I APPRECIATE THE WORK ON THIS AND THE ATTENTION YOU PAY TO THIS, AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU MORE OF THE OTHER DISTRICT COMPARISONS WHEN WE LOOK AT TAPER. PERFECT.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU ALL. THANK YOU.

THANK YOU. AND NOW WE'LL HAVE THE PRESENTATION YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR TWO WEEKS, SINCE ABOUT 10:30 P.M.

[9.3 Summer Projects Update]

TWO WEEKS AGO.

THE SUMMER PROJECTS UPDATE WITH MR. TRIMBLE, DR.

SAYLORS AND MR. BOLEK. WAIT.

I DON'T SEE HOW MR. BOLEK HERE.

GOOD EVENING.

SO, BRIAN BOLEK IS VERY DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE HE COULDN'T BE HERE TONIGHT.

SO, YOU'VE GOT B TEAM AND THEN DR.

SAYLORS' A TEAM.

BUT WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS GIVE THE PRESENTATION WE WERE PLANNING TO GIVE LAST MEETING.

[00:50:01]

BUT WHAT THIS IS, IS JUST A QUICK SUMMARY HIGHLIGHT OF SUMMER PROJECTS.

WE'VE DONE THIS EVERY SINGLE YEAR BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN DOING SUMMER PROJECTS FOR EVERY SINGLE YEAR FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER.

SO, THIS IS JUST A GENERAL HIGHLIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 40 PROJECTS, INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS THAT WERE COMPLETED TOTALING AROUND $3.5 MILLION.

SO THAT'S DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS SUMMERS.

WHY THAT IS, IS BECAUSE WE'RE WRAPPING UP 2019 BOND AND WE'RE TRANSITIONING INTO 2023.

BOND NOT A LOT OF TIME TO GET A LOT OF THINGS ROLLING FOR 23 BOND BUT I PROMISE YOU, WHEN WE COME BACK HERE NEXT YEAR, THESE NUMBERS ARE GOING TO BE VERY, VERY DIFFERENT BECAUSE WE'RE ALREADY PLANNING FOR THOSE UPCOMING SUMMER PROJECTS RIGHT NOW TO GET AHEAD OF THINGS.

SO, SO QUICK HIGHLIGHTS.

WE'RE GOING TO START WITH SOME FLASHY STUFF BECAUSE LIBRARY MODERNIZATION IS IF YOU HAVEN'T VISITED OUR CAMPUSES AND OUR LIBRARIES, SOME BIG TRANSFORMATIONS THERE.

THAT WORK STARTED BACK IN THE SPRING WITH BRIAN AND HIS TEAM WORKING ALONGSIDE THE LIBRARIANS TO KIND OF REIMAGINE THEIR SPACES AND GIVE THEM A FRESH, NEW LOOK.

AND I THINK THEY WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THAT WITH FURNITURE AND FLOORING AND PAINTING AND OTHER FINISHES.

SO THEY LOOK REALLY GOOD.

WE'RE NOT DONE WITH THE WORK, THOUGH, SO WE'LL CONTINUE SOME OF THAT THROUGHOUT THIS SCHOOL YEAR AND INTO NEXT SUMMER.

THE HIGH SCHOOL WILL GET PROBABLY A LITTLE BIT MORE CONCENTRATED ATTENTION NEXT SUMMER.

AND THEN WE HAVE THE FURNITURE.

AND JOHN AND DOUG, WHO WE SAW EARLIER, WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN THIS PROCESS.

WE COMPLETED APPROXIMATELY 90 CLASSROOMS AND OVER 5000 STUDENT DESKS AND CHAIRS.

THIS IS KIND OF LIKE THAT SWEET SPOT WHERE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN ACCOMPLISH, WHICH IS NOT BEING OVERBEARING ON OUR CAMPUSES AND THE STAFF.

SO ALL THE ALL THOSE PIECES OF FURNITURE WERE REPLACED.

YOU CAN SEE SOME OF OUR STAFF LOADING LOADING TRUCKS AND THEN THAT GOES TO SURPLUS AND IT GETS SOLD JUST LIKE DR.

ARNETT MENTIONED, AND IT BRINGS IN REVENUE FOR THE DISTRICT IN THE FUTURE.

AND SO, WE'RE NOT DONE. WE'RE A LITTLE BIT OVER HALFWAY.

ALMOST TWO THIRDS DONE WITH THE FURNITURE.

SO, WE'LL DO SOME MORE CLASSROOMS THE NEXT SUMMER AND THE NEXT COUPLE BECAUSE IT'S INCLUDED IN THE 23 BOND.

AND WE HAVE SOME PLAYGROUND TURF RENOVATIONS.

THIS IS A COLLABORATION ON SOME OF THESE BETWEEN DISTRICT, BUT ALSO SOME OF OUR BOOSTER CLUBS THAT REALLY HAD SOME VISION ON IMPROVING SOME OF THE SPACES AT THEIR CAMPUS.

ON THE FAR LEFT, YOU SEE WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS IS THE COURTYARD IN THE NINTH GRADE CENTER AREA.

THAT WAS LIKE A SPACE, BUT IT NEEDED SOME IMPROVEMENTS AND SO WE COLLABORATED WITH THEM TO COMPLETE THAT PROJECT.

BARTON CREEK. THIS IS A CDC AREA.

THIS IS THE LITTLE TRICYCLE TRACK THAT YOU SEE IN THE FOREGROUND THERE.

AND SO, MOST OF THIS IS EROSION.

SO, WE HAD SOME EROSION OR EROSION PROJECTS ALLOCATED IN 2019 BOND AND THEN THEY WANTED TO KIND OF SPRUCE THINGS UP.

SO THAT'S THE COMBINATION.

AND THE BOTTOM IS HILL COUNTRY IN THE FRONT.

IF YOU HAVEN'T VISITED THE FRONT OF HILL COUNTRY, IT LOOKS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND IT'S SERVING THEIR NEEDS VERY WELL.

AND THEN THIS IS THE OLD PAC ENTRANCE.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, WE TALKED ABOUT THIS LAST IN THE LAST SCHOOL YEAR AND GOING INTO THE SUMMER THAT WE NEEDED TO HAVE A SOLUTION TO ALLOW THAT TO BE A SECURED ENTRY VESTIBULE.

AND SO WE PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER AND CAME UP WITH A SOLUTION THAT I THINK IS WORKING.

IT WAS FULLY IMPLEMENTED FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL AND VOILA, THERE'S YOUR YOUR TRANSFORMATION ON PUTTING THOSE PROVISIONS IN PLACE.

SO WE HAVE A STAFF MEMBER THERE AT ALL TIMES.

THEY HAVE ALL THE THE TECHNOLOGY THEY NEED WHEN IT COMES TO RAPTOR.

AND ALSO THEY HAVE THAT LITTLE INTERCOM BUTTON AS WELL.

THIS IS A REALLY, REALLY FANCY PROJECT HERE, BUT THIS IS JUST BARTON CREEK AND CEDAR CREEK KITCHEN RENOVATIONS.

THIS IS ACTUALLY A 23 BOND PROJECT WORKING WITH RICHARD RICHARD MALLARD AND WHY WE DID THAT IS BECAUSE WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOME FEDERAL GRANTS TO HELP US WITH THIS PROJECT.

SO WE ROLLED IT AS FAST AS WE COULD, AND SO WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GRANT MONEY, WHICH DOES WHAT IT SAVES US MONEY ON THE BOND SIDE.

SO THIS IS A GOOD UNDER BUDGET PROJECT TO KICK US OFF.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, IS THE CHAPARRAL STADIUM.

THIS IS ONE OF THE PROJECTS THAT THE BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE RECOMMENDED TO DO A CHANGE TO INCLUDE IN THE 2019 BOND TO USE SOME UNALLOCATED FUNDS TO GET THIS DONE OVER THE SUMMER. YOU MAY HAVE SEEN SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND SOME OF THE COMMUNICATIONS AROUND THAT.

THIS USES AN ECO-THERM TECHNOLOGY THAT'S DESIGNED TO PERFORM ABOUT 20 TO 20 DEGREES COOLER THAN A TYPICAL ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD.

AND GUESS WHAT? IT WAS PERFECT TIMING FOR 76 DAYS OR WHATEVER, WE HAD OVER 100 DEGREES.

SO IT'S PERFORMING WELL.

COACHES, PLAYERS LOVE THAT FIELD AND OBVIOUSLY IT'S A LITTLE BIT COOLER THAN FIELDS ONE AND TWO IN THE DISTANCE.

[00:55:01]

SO, GREAT COLLABORATION WITH THE COACHES TO GET THAT PRODUCT IN PLACE IN TIME FOR THEM TO RETURN THIS SUMMER.

AND WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO HAND THIS OVER TO DR.

SAYLORS. SOME OF OUR SUMMER WORK FOCUSED ON THE CLASSROOM.

SO SPECIFICALLY MAKING SURE THAT WE HAD A BASELINE ACROSS ALL LEVELS.

SO ALL ELEMENTARY CLASSROOMS ARE THE SAME.

THEY HAVE THE SAME TECHNOLOGY, THE SAME OPPORTUNITY.

WE REPLACED ALL OF THE SOUND AMPLIFICATION SYSTEMS IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOMS. THOSE ARE THOSE MICROPHONES THAT THE TEACHERS WEAR AROUND SO THAT THEY'RE NOT YOU KNOW, THEY'RE USING THEIR CHEERLEADING VOICE 24 OVER SEVEN.

SO THOSE HAVE ALL BEEN UPGRADED.

THE ELEMENTARY IPAD CARTS WERE ALL REWIRED SO THAT ALL OF THE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO CHARGE THEIR FULLY CHARGED THEIR DEVICES AT ANY TIME IF THEY NEEDED TO FOR THE SECONDARY CLASSROOMS. WE REPLACED ALL OF THEIR SPEAKERS AND THEIR AMPLIFICATION SYSTEMS. THOSE ARE IN THE CEILING SO THAT THEY CAN WORK WITH THEIR PANELS, PLAY ANYTHING THAT THEY NEED TO PLAY, AND THAT IT'S A BETTER OPPORTUNITY AND A BETTER EXPERIENCE FOR THE STUDENTS. AND THEN WE REPLACED ALL OF THE CTE COMPUTER LABS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND THE HIGH SCHOOLS FOCUSING ON THE CTE CLASSROOMS THAT HAD THE SOFTWARE SPECIFIC NEEDS.

SO, THE CAD LABS, THE SPECIFIC, COMPUTER PROGRAMING CLASSES, ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

WE UPGRADED THE SOFTWARE AS WELL AS THE HARDWARE THAT GOES INTO THOSE CLASSROOMS FOR THE KIDDOS.

I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO DROP. THIS ISN'T ANYTHING SPECTACULAR.

THERE'S NO BIG PICTURES TO SHOW YOU THIS, BUT THIS IS INFRASTRUCTURE AND SAFETY.

THIS IS IMPORTANT IN OUR WORLD.

THERE'S JUST NOTHING PRETTY TO LOOK AT.

WE UPGRADED ALL OF OUR WEB FILTER APPLICATIONS TO MAKE SURE IT FUNCTIONS AS WE EXPECT IT TO AND THAT WE'RE MEETING ALL OF THE STANDARDS.

AND WE ALSO COMPLETED OUR SECOND VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT.

SO WE PAY AN OUTSIDE COMPANY TO TEST OUR SYSTEMS TO SEE HOW SECURE THEY ARE.

WE PASSED THAT AND WE'RE MOVING FORWARD AS PART OF THE 2023 BOND WITH AN ADDITIONAL UPPER SCALE TEST JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CONTINUE TO BE SAFE AND SECURE. AND WE IMPLEMENTED TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION ON ALL OF OUR STAFF ACCOUNTS.

SO, BECAUSE PEOPLE TRY TO SELL US PIANOS ONLINE AND WE HAVE ALL OF THE LATEST PHISHING SCAMS AND EMAILS THAT COME ACROSS, WE DECIDED TO PUT AN EXTRA SECURITY MEASURE ON ALL STAFF ACCOUNTS.

SO IF SOMEONE WOULD HAPPEN TO LOG IN AS MY ACCOUNT OR JEREMY'S ACCOUNT OR ANYBODY'S THAT WE WOULD RECEIVE NOTIFICATION THAT SAYS A LOGIN HAS OCCURRED ON THIS DEVICE. WAS THIS YOU? IF SO, YOU CAN ENTER YOUR CODE.

IF NOT, YOU KNOW, TO CONTACT TECHNOLOGY SERVICES AND WILL HELP YOU CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD AND LOOK AT YOUR ACCOUNT TO MAKE SURE NOTHING HAS HAPPENED.

WE ALSO IMPLEMENTED A REQUIRED DATA PRIVACY COURSE.

WE WORKED WITH HR AND PART OF THE VECTOR TRAINING FOR ALL STAFF IS THEY MUST COMPLETE THIS DATA PRIVACY COURSE, FOCUSING ON COMPLIANCE, PRIVATE INFORMATION, BEING SAFE ONLINE, MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE TAKING PRECAUTION WHEN WE RESPOND TO EMAILS FROM STAFF OR INDIVIDUALS THAT WE DON'T KNOW. AND THEN WE DEVELOPED AN ONLINE SAFETY WEBSITE JUST AS A REMINDER THAT HERE ARE SOME TIPS AND TRICKS.

HERE'S THINGS TO LOOK FOR.

WE HAVE WHAT WE CALL CUE CARDS THAT COME OUT OFTEN THAT SAY WHAT IS WHAT.

EVERY TIME WE GET A PHISHING EMAIL, WE SEND THOSE OUT TO THE STAFF AND SAY, HERE'S HOW YOU KNOW, THIS IS A PHISHING EMAIL.

AND SO WE JUST POINT OUT THE OBVIOUS TO US, BUT NOT ALWAYS WHAT IS OBVIOUS TO THE STAFF MEMBERS.

SO WE UPDATE THAT PAGE EVERY TIME WE GET ANOTHER PHISHING EMAIL.

EVERYTHING. THANK YOU BOTH.

QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I JUST, I HAVE ONE QUESTION ABOUT THE PHISHING EMAILS.

HOW MANY DO WE GET A MONTH? MORE THAN WE WOULD LIKE? I WOULD SAY WE AVERAGE 1 TO 2 A WEEK.

AND THE STAFF, KUDOS TO THE STAFF.

THEY HAVE BEEN SO GOOD ABOUT REPORTING THEM, ABOUT EMAILING THEM TO ME.

THEY WILL EMAIL ME AND SAY, PHISHING? IS THIS A SCAM? WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED THEM TO DO SO WE GET OUR FAIR SHARE.

PROBABLY NOT AS MANY AS OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, THOUGH.

HOW MANY TIMES? DESPITE BEING PRETTY ON THE BALL, DO PEOPLE FALL FOR THESE AND EANES? IS IT A SERIOUS PROBLEM? HAVE WE HAD ANY MAJOR BREAKS? KNOCK ON WOOD, WE HAVE NOT HAD ANYONE THIS SCHOOL YEAR BUY AN ONLINE COMPUTER ONLINE PIANO.

JUST GOING TO LEAVE IT AT THAT.

ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU.

OKAY. HEATHER, I DON'T HAVE A QUESTION.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I KNOW THE WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL PACK WAS NOT SOMETHING THAT WE HAD REALLY PUT ON THE BACK AND THE BOC

[01:00:09]

AND ALL OF THAT STUFF. IT WAS JUST KIND OF A NECESSITY.

AND I AM SO IMPRESSED WITH EVERYONE THAT JUST JUMPED INTO ACTION AND MADE IT HAPPEN.

AND HONESTLY, IT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS BEEN A PART OF THE PLAN THE WHOLE TIME.

YOU CAN'T TELL THAT IT'S AN AFTERTHOUGHT.

SO I JUST REALLY WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR PRIORITIZING THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS AND DOING WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO QUICKLY.

BUT EVERYTHING ELSE LOOKS AMAZING.

I MEAN, THE LIBRARIES, EVERYTHING LOOKS SO GOOD.

SO THANK YOU TO THE TEAM AND THANK YOU FOR THE STUFF WE CAN'T SEE ALSO.

CHRISTY. THANK YOU, HEATHER.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? YEAH. ELLEN, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK THAT WAS DONE.

AND BECAUSE I KNOW SUMMER IS JUST WHEN Y'ALL GO FOR IT.

SO IT'S ALWAYS FUN TO SEE WHAT YOU DO OVER THE SUMMER.

AND DO I UNDERSTAND TJ'S BACK? YES, WE HAVE FILLED OUR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER POSITION IN TJ WASHBURN.

WILL WE BE RETURNING TO EANES ISD? HOPEFULLY AT THE BEGINNING OF OCTOBER.

AND SO, HE'LL BE BUSY WITH ALL OF THIS.

SO, YOU'LL BE SEEING HIM AROUND, SEE WHAT HE DOES WITH HIS.

WE DID NOT HAVE HIM THIS SUMMER.

AND SO AGAIN, THAT'S WHERE I WANT TO THANK THE TEAM ON BOTH TECHNOLOGY AND AND AND JUST STEPPING UP AND GETTING ALL THIS WORK DONE.

IT WAS A CHALLENGE, BUT EVERYONE STEPPED IN AND GOT IT DONE.

IT'S THE SAME TEAM THAT I BELIEVE MAY HAVE FIXED THE AIR CONDITIONING IN THIS ROOM BECAUSE I FEEL SOME COOL AIR RIGHT NOW.

AS WE SAT HERE.

I DO HAVE A SMALL QUESTION FOR CHRISTY.

ARE THERE A LOT OF COMPUTERS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THAT ARE NOT IN CTC LABS BUT ARE HAVE HIGH TECH REQUIREMENTS? DALE BAKER'S CLASS AT BILLY GEORGE DOES NOW THE DIGITAL ART, THE PRINT JOURNALISM CLASSES, THE TECH THEATER, SOME OF THEIR APPLICATIONS. WERE THOSE COMPUTERS REPLACED AS WELL? YES, THEY WERE. SO ALL OF THEM, WHETHER THEY WERE, THEY MAY ALL QUALIFY FOR CTC AND I'M JUST NOT AWARE OF THAT.

YES, THEY ALL WERE UPGRADED, AND THEY ALL RECEIVED THE NEW DRAWINGS, TABLETS THAT GO WITH THAT FOR THE DIGITAL.

YES. AT THE PAC.

YES. GREAT. YEAH, GREAT.

ALL RIGHT, I'LL JUST ADD A THANK YOU.

AND I LIKE THE TURF THAT'S BEING INSTALLED IN PLACES WHERE GRASS WON'T GROW.

AND THAT MAY BE MORE AND MORE PLACES WHEN WE HAVE 75 DAYS OF NO RAIN AND 100 DEGREES.

I APPRECIATE YOUR WORK ON THIS AND THE WHOLE TEAM.

THANK YOU BOTH.

ALL RIGHT. WE'LL MOVE INTO OUR DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEMS.

[10.1 Discussion and Possible Action to Award Request for Proposal for Police Vehicles]

THE FIRST ITEM, DR.

ARNETT, DO YOU WANT TO DISCUSS THAT? I CAN AND I'M GOING TO GIVE OUR PRESENTERS A BREAK FROM THIS TONIGHT BECAUSE I'D LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING INSTEAD, OR AT LEAST BEFORE THE BOARD CONSIDERS THIS THE PROPOSED PURCHASE OF VEHICLES FOR OUR SAFETY OFFICERS.

REGARDING THAT ACTION ITEM, WE WANT TO BE RESPONSIVE AND TO RE SUBSTANTIATE THE RESULTS OF OUR PROCUREMENT PROCESS THAT LED TO THE ORIGINAL RECOMMENDATION.

IN ADDITION, WE ACKNOWLEDGE WE NEED TO CLARIFY THE POSITION OF THE TEXAS COMMISSION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THE INTERPRETATION OF TEXAS PUBLIC LAW, UPON WHICH WE BASED OUR RATIONALE FOR EACH OFFICER HAVING HIS OR HER OWN VEHICLE AS A PART OF THE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT.

WE HAVE A MEETING SCHEDULED WITH TCOLE REPRESENTATIVES NEXT WEEK, DURING WHICH WE WILL CONFIRM WHAT IS ESSENTIAL AND EQUITABLE FOR EACH OF OUR 11 OFFICERS.

AND WHILE WE WOULD LIKE TO PROCEED, WE FEEL THE PRUDENT ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSE IS TO REVISIT VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THIS ACTION ITEM, AND WE WOULD ASK THE BOARD TO TABLE THE RECOMMENDATION AS PROPOSED, UNTIL A FUTURE MEETING ON A DATE TO BE DETERMINED.

THANK YOU, DR. ARNETT.

I APPRECIATE THE ADMINISTRATION'S ATTENTION TO THIS AND I BELIEVE THE BOARD IS FINE WITH TABLING IT AT THIS TIME.

DO WE NEED A MOTION FOR THAT, AUDREY? DO WE NEED TO KNOW? I DON'T NEED A MOTION TO DO THAT.

SO, WE'LL TABLE THAT ITEM FOR NOW AND MOVE ON TO THE APPROVAL OF THE DEI COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

[10.2 Discussion and Possible Action to Approve DEI Committee Members]

DR. SAYLORS, WELCOME BACK.

I'M HERE FOR BEHALF FOR DIANE, OBVIOUSLY, TONIGHT.

SO, YOU HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION FOR THE BUY WAS SENT TO YOU EARLIER TODAY.

YOU ALSO HAVE A PAPER COPY IN FRONT OF YOU.

OF THE APPLICANTS FOR RECEIVED VOTES, IF YOU WILL, FROM THE TRUSTEES.

TWO OUT OF THE FOUR RECEIVED THE MAJORITY OF VOTES.

SO I'M HERE.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT TO DISCUSS WITH ME OR ABOUT THE PROCESS.

[01:05:08]

YOU COULD MAKE A MOTION. IT'S LIKE, NO QUESTIONS.

NO QUESTION. QUESTIONS.

MAKE A MOTION. I MOVE THAT.

THANK YOU, DR.

SELLERS. I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE THE FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

MEMBERSHIP FOR BARTON CREEK AND FOREST TRAIL ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES OF FTE, P4 AND BCE, P1. A MOTION FROM KIM AND A SECOND FROM HEATHER.

JUST TO CLARIFY REAL QUICK, WE ARE NOT USING NAMES HERE BECAUSE IN CONSIDERING THESE INDIVIDUALS, WE WEREN'T SUPPLIED THE NAMES.

WE LOOKED AT THEIR CREDENTIALS AND THEIR APPLICATION ANSWERS AND DECIDED ON THIS BASED ON THESE SORTS OF CODES.

THESE INDIVIDUALS WILL BE CONTACTED NOW.

OKAY. SO, WE SAID SO THE MOTION IS FOR FTE, FOREST TRAIL ELEMENTARY, P4 AND BCE, P1 BARK CREEK ELEMENTARY.

PERSON ONE OKAY.

MOTION SECONDED.

ANY DISCUSSION? YES, ELLEN.

I WAS ONCE AGAIN BLOWN AWAY BY THE QUALITY OF THE APPLICANTS WE HAD ACROSS THE BOARD.

IT WAS HARD TO MAKE A DECISION BECAUSE THERE REALLY ARE JUST SUCH OUTSTANDING PEOPLE WHO ARE SO INTERESTED AND INVESTED IN THE STUDENTS AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

ONCE AGAIN, AMAZING.

THANK YOU, ALAN. KIM. I WANT TO ECHO WHAT ELLEN SAID.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO APPLIED AND WANTED TO ASSIST THE DISTRICT IN THIS COMMITTEE, THIS IMPORTANT COMMITTEE.

IT STRUCK ME THAT MAYBE IF WE EVER NEEDED AT LARGE, WE'VE GOT WE'VE GOT SOME GREAT CANDIDATES.

YEAH, I WOULD ECHO THAT.

AND IT'S IT'S LIKE WE HAD MULTIPLE REALLY GOOD CHOICES HERE AND I APPRECIATE EVERYONE WHO APPLIED.

THOUGHTS OR COMMENTS. OKAY.

SAY SOMETHING. YES, PLEASE.

I JUST WANT TO COMMEND THE TRUSTEES BECAUSE YOUR TURNAROUND ON THIS WAS RATHER TIGHT AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR HELP.

AND I KNOW THE COMMITTEE DOES AS WELL IN HELPING TO EXPEDITE THE SELECTION OF THESE MEMBERS SO THAT THEY CAN CONTINUE THEIR WORK IN THEIR CONVERSATIONS THIS FALL.

SO THANK YOU AND TO DR.

SELLERS FOR HELPING TO ORGANIZE THE PROCESS.

YEAH, THANK YOU, DIANE.

I'LL JUST ADD TO THAT.

THANK YOU TO THE ADMINISTRATION AND DR.

SELLERS FOR THE PROCESS.

IT WAS SO WELL LAID OUT, YOU KNOW, EXCEL SPREADSHEETS THAT WE COULD SO EASILY FLIP BACK AND FORTH AND COMPARE THE CANDIDATES BECAUSE AS YOU WERE SAYING, ELLEN, WE HAD SOME REALLY STRONG APPLICANTS.

AND I JUST YOU KNOW, I WANTED TO GIVE IT CAREFUL CONSIDERATION.

AND IT WAS MADE VERY, VERY CLEAR AND VERY, VERY WELL DONE.

THANK YOU. OKAY.

THANK YOU. THE MOTION HAS BEEN MADE AND SECONDED.

WE WILL NOW VOTE.
