[5. EANES ISD MISSION STATEMENT]
UNITE. EMPOWER.WE INSPIRE EACH OTHER TO LEAD PURPOSEFUL LIVES OF EMPATHY, GRATITUDE, AND COMPASSION.
WE'LL NOW MOVE INTO OUR PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.
[INAUDIBLE] WHAT DID I DO WITH MY LITTLE PIECE OF PAPER? [INAUDIBLE].ALLEGIANCE] THANK YOU.
REAL QUICK. OUR PLEDGE WAS LED TONIGHT BY JAX RAY, A SEVENTH GRADER AT WEST RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AND JAX PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED FOREST TRAIL ELEMENTARY.
JAX, WOULD YOU COME FORWARD FOR JUST A MOMENT? I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR.
WE WILL NOW MOVE FORWARD WITH OUR AGENDA TO OUR SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT, DR.
[7. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT]
ARNETT. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU, MR. SPRADLEY. THANK YOU, EVERYBODY, FOR BEING HERE TONIGHT.MY REPORT THIS EVENING IS BRIEF.
AND THAT'S BECAUSE WE'RE RECOGNIZING TWO OF OUR STUDENTS FROM WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL.
WE'RE VERY HONORED TONIGHT TO HAVE REUBEN PAUL AND GRANT STEINAUER WITH US.
REUBEN AND GRANT WERE RECOGNIZED AS OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL ENTREPRENEURS.
BOTH ARE FINALISTS BY THIS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FROM THE TEXAS BUSINESS HALL OF FAME.
AND THEN REUBEN WAS CHOSEN AS THE OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL ENTREPRENEUR.
SO WE'RE GLAD THAT BOTH GRANT AND REUBEN ARE HERE THIS EVENING.
AND SO WE'RE VERY HAPPY TO HAVE GRANT AND REUBEN HERE THIS EVENING.
I'M GOING TO ASK THEM TO COME FORWARD, IF YOU DON'T MIND.
WE'LL GET A QUICK PHOTOGRAPH WITH THE TRUSTEES.
[00:05:02]
NO BETTER WAY TO CONCLUDE MY REPORT THIS EVENING THAN TO RECOGNIZE TWO DESERVING STUDENTS.ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
JUST REAL QUICK. WE DON'T MIND IF YOU GET UP AND LEAVE IF YOUR PART'S DONE, IT'S FINE.
YOU DON'T OFFEND US IF YOU LEAVE, IT'S FINE.
OKAY, WE'LL MOVE INTO OUR REPORTS, OUR FINANCIAL INTEGRITY RATING SYSTEM OF TEXAS REPORT, MR.
[9. PUBLIC HEARING ON FINANCIAL INTEGRITY RATING SYSTEM OF TEXAS (FIRST)]
CHRIS SCOTT. I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE.YEAH, THEY'RE HURTING MY FEELINGS.
WELL, AS YOU CAN SEE, I'M NOT MARIA ROCKSTEAD WHO PREPARED THIS REPORT FOR YOU.
BUT MARIA HAS HAD A FAMILY EMERGENCY AND COULDN'T BE HERE TONIGHT.
SO, AS YOU KNOW, THE FINANCIAL INTEGRITY RATING SYSTEM OF TEXAS FIRST HAS BEEN IN PLACE SINCE 2003.
AND I GOT THE SINKING CHAIR TONIGHT.
OKAY, I'LL LOWER THE MICROPHONE.
AND I BELIEVE I GAVE MY FIRST REPORT IN 2003.
SO HERE I AM 20 YEARS LATER DOING IT AGAIN.
AND SO IT'S BASED ON DATA, IF YOU REMEMBER FROM THAT, THAT PRECEDES IT BY A COUPLE OF YEARS.
IN FACT, THEY'VE NOT FINISHED THE ANALYSIS OF THE 21-22 YET.
AND SO WE THEY'VE DONE IT GOOD ENOUGH, THE 21-22.
AND SO IT TAKES A WHILE AND THAT'S WHY IT LAGS BEHIND.
AND ONCE AGAIN EANES HAS RECEIVED THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE RATING.
THERE'S BEEN A COUPLE OF UPDATES TO FIRST, OVER THE YEARS AND THERE ARE SOME NEW UPDATES THIS YEAR.
IT'S MADE UP OF A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT INDICATORS.
THREE OF THEM ARE WHAT ARE KNOWN AS CRITICAL SEALING INDICATORS.
INDICATORS ONE, TWO AND THREE ARE CRITICAL INDICATORS THAT ARE YES OR NO.
SO IF YOU GET A NO ON THOSE THEN YOU FAIL.
AND SO AND THOSE ARE PRETTY BASIC.
I BELIEVE THE THREE INDICATORS ARE ONE.
DID YOU GET YOUR AFR SUBMITTED TO TEA ON TIME? TWO DID YOU NOT RECEIVE AN UNMODIFIED OPINION? AND THREE DID YOU MAKE ALL ALL YOUR DEBT PAYMENTS ON TIME? AND SO FAILURE TO DO ANY ONE OF THOSE THINGS WOULD, WOULD END UP WITH A FAILURE OR A FAILING RATING ON THE FIRST SYSTEM SO SIX, 16, 17 AND 20 ARE WHAT ARE CALLED CEILING INDICATORS.
AND SO THEY'RE, THEY'RE KIND OF LIKE THE YES NO QUESTIONS.
BUT INSTEAD OF AUTOMATICALLY GIVING YOU A FAILING GRADE, THEY'RE AUTOMATICALLY GIVING YOU A BAD GRADE, WHICH COULD THEN DROP INTO A FAILING GRADE IF YOU KNOW, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU DO ON SOME OF THE OTHER INDICATORS AND THE OTHER ONES ARE, ARE MOSTLY RATIOS THAT ARE LOOKING AT YOUR OVERALL FINANCIAL HEALTH.
SO THESE ARE THE NEW ONES AND I WON'T SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THEM.
THE FIRST ONE, IT'S PRETTY STRAIGHTFORWARD.
AND I THINK THAT'S THEY'RE LOOKING AT IT IN A GOOD WAY, AS INSTEAD OF SAYING PERCENT OF YOUR EXPENDITURES, WHICH CAN GET IFFY FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE HIGH RECAPTURE DISTRICTS, IT TALKS ABOUT DAYS OF OPERATING EXPENDITURES.
SO I THINK THAT'S A GOOD WAY FOR THEM TO EXPRESS IT.
UM, INDICATOR TEN, DID THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AVERAGE LESS THAN 10% VARIANCE ON ITS BUDGETED REVENUES TO ACTUAL REVENUES FOR THE LAST THREE FISCAL YEARS? I'M NOT SURE WHY THEY THINK THIS IS AS IMPORTANT AS IT IS.
THEY DO. INDICATOR 15 IS TALKING ABOUT.
AND THEN FUNDING IS BASED ON THOSE ESTIMATES THAT YOU GAVE THEM.
[00:10:05]
AND SO AND THEN THEY SETTLE UP AT THE END OF IT BASED ON WHAT YOUR ACTUAL ADA WAS.AND SO I THINK HERE, WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO SAY IS DON'T TRY TO GAME THE SYSTEM TO GET MORE, TO GET MORE MONEY FROM US THAN, THAN YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING TO NEED OR THAT YOU DESERVE, OR IN OUR CASE, TO PAY LESS AND RECAPTURE.
BUT IN THE MEANTIME, YOU MIGHT HAVE EARNED SOME MONEY ON THAT.
SO THAT'S THE PURPOSE OF WHAT THEY'RE SHOOTING FOR THERE.
AND THEN I WON'T GO THROUGH ALL OF THESE.
UM, BUT THE BREAKDOWN IS FOR A SUPERIOR SCORE.
90 TO 100 ABOVE STANDARD IS 80 TO 89.
AND THEN C OR A MEET STANDARD IS A 70 TO 79.
AND LESS THAN THAT IS A SUBSTANDARD ACHIEVEMENT.
AND OBVIOUSLY WE RECEIVED A SUPERIOR SCORE THIS YEAR AS WE HAVE EVERY YEAR FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS.
HOWEVER, 90 OUT OF 100 AND THAT ONE PARTICULAR RATING IS THE ONE THAT'S GOING TO GET US, I BELIEVE IT'S I'VE GOT A LITTLE DISCUSSION OF IT COMING UP HERE.
UM, INDICATOR EIGHT MEASURE OF CURRENT ASSETS TO CURRENT LIABILITIES.
AND THIS IS THE ONE THAT'S BEEN GETTING US FOR YEARS.
AND SO LAST YEAR WE IF YOU REMEMBER, WE GOT FOUR POINTS ON THAT.
I DON'T THINK THAT NECESSARILY REFLECTS ON OUR BUSINESS OFFICE OR ON OUR DISTRICT.
THAT'S JUST THAT'S A QUIRK OF THE SYSTEM THAT.
ADVERSELY IMPACTS DISTRICTS LIKE US THAT PAY A LOT OF RECAPTURE, BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT THAT HIGH LIABILITY SITTING OUT THERE AT THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR, YOU KNOW, WE END UP WITH THAT LOW SCORE ON INDICATOR EIGHT.
UM, SO THE REPORT, ACTUAL REPORT, WHICH IS IN YOUR FOLDER AND WHICH ALSO WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE TOMORROW, INCLUDES A LOT OF THINGS, INCLUDING SOME REQUIRED DISCLOSURES THAT YOU GUYS ARE AWARE OF.
AND THAT'S THAT AND IF THERE IS ANY, HERE'S THE PART WHERE WE GET TO THAT AND AS WITH THE FIRST ONE, I'VE YET TO HAVE ANYBODY WHO ACTUALLY HAD A COMMENT AT THE PUBLIC HEARING, BUT MAYBE THIS WILL BREAK THE CHAIN.
OKAY. DON'T HAVE ANYONE TO SPEAK TONIGHT ON THAT.
LET ME TAKE TRUSTEE QUESTIONS.
I'LL START WITH HEATHER AND THEN KIM.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS FIRST REPORT.
AND I KNOW I'VE EVEN ASKED THE COMMISSIONER ABOUT THAT ISSUE THAT WE HAVE WITH RECAPTURE, BECAUSE IT'S INFURIATING THAT WE HAVE TO PAY THE RECAPTURE AND THAT YET WE GET DINGED FOR IT. SO I'M WONDERING IF THIS IS AN ADMINISTRATIVE RULEMAKING WITH TEA, OR IF THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE SOMETHING THAT WE COULD HAVE ONE OF OUR REPRESENTATIVES FILE LEGISLATION TO CORRECT? POSSIBLY. I DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT.
I DO KNOW THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SOME ATTEMPTS, AND I THINK THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BILL FILED EITHER IN THIS PAST LEGISLATIVE SESSION OR THE ONE BEFORE THAT ENDED UP NOT GOING ANYWHERE, PROBABLY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SCHOOL FINANCE LEGISLATION TO SPEAK OF THAT ADVANCED.
BUT THAT WOULD BE NICE IF THAT DID GET INCLUDED.
THANK YOU. HEATHER WILL GO TO KIM.
AND ONE IS. I'LL START WITH THE ONE THAT HEATHER BROUGHT UP.
I WAS COMING AT IT FROM A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE INDICATOR EIGHT AND THEN.
[00:15:08]
BUT, YOU KNOW, SO MANY SCHOOLS ARE ALSO RECAPTURE SCHOOLS.I WOULD THINK THAT IT IT ALSO AFFECTS MANY SCHOOLS.
YES. AND SO THERE YOU KNOW SIMILAR TO WHAT HEATHER SAYING WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE AFFECTED SIMILARLY IN A NEGATIVE WAY BECAUSE WE ARE RECAPTURE SCHOOLS AND THERE'S SO MUCH EMPHASIS PUT ON THIS.
SO, YOU KNOW, I HADN'T THOUGHT ABOUT THE LEGISLATIVE ANGLE OF IT, BUT MY QUESTION WAS, IF THERE'S ANYTHING IN YOUR COMMUNITY OF SCHOOL CFOS WHERE WE'RE LOOKING TO SEE HOW THIS IS GOING TO AFFECT US DOWN THE LINE AND WHAT OTHER SCHOOLS ARE GOING TO BE AFFECTED. AND IF THE RATINGS COULD SOMEHOW BE.
UPDATED OR ENACTED TO TAKE IN THE REALITY OF RECAPTURE SCHOOLS.
AND I'M NOT GOING TO RECOMMEND THAT.
AND IF YOU ASK ME TO DO THAT, I'D TRY TO TALK YOU OUT OF IT.
RIGHT? RIGHT. THAT'S KIND OF THE TAIL WAGGING.
YEAH. SO THAT IS A WAY THAT THE SYSTEM COULD BE GAMED IN OUR FAVOR ON THE OTHER HAND, WE TAKE PRIDE IN DOING WELL ON THE FIRST REPORT.
THIS I THINK IT'S A MATTER OF PRIDE FOR US, BUT IT'S NOT SOMETHING OTHER THAN A HIT TO THE EGO THAT'S NEGATIVELY IMPACTING THE DISTRICT.
IF WE WERE TO DROP BELOW THAT TOP TIER, OKAY.
AND THEN THAT REALLY LEADS INTO MY SECOND QUESTION, WHICH IS A MORE BROAD QUESTION ON THE DETERMINATION OF RATINGS, SINCE WE ARE RIGHT AT THE DEMARCATION AT 90%. BUT, YOU KNOW, OUT OF 1018 DISTRICTS, ONLY 99 ARE UNDER A.
SO WE'RE IN THE 90% IN THE A DETERMINATION.
I WOULD ALSO THINK THAT SO MANY OTHER SCHOOLS ARE ALSO SIMILARLY SITUATED WHERE THEY'RE AT A DEMARCATION BECAUSE OF RECAPTURE, BECAUSE OF SOME OF THESE ADVERSELY.
YOU ALSO HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND THAT THE SCALE OF THE RECAPTURE IS A BIG PART OF IT.
AND SO A DISTRICT THAT WAS PAYING, FOR EXAMPLE, THIS YEAR WE'RE GOING TO PAY INSTEAD OF $120 MILLION, WE'RE GOING TO PAY 90 SOMETHING MILLION.
AND SO THAT WILL PROBABLY HELP US OUT BUT NOT FOR ANOTHER TWO YEARS.
AND SO IF WE GET HIT, IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO I THINK.
BUT YOU KNOW, THE LONG TERM TREND OF COURSE ON RECAPTURE IS IT GOES UP.
OKAY SO THEN THE BROAD QUESTION IS I THINK YOU'VE JUST ANSWERED EVEN IF BECAUSE WE ARE ON THAT CUSP OR THAT DEMARCATION LINE, EVEN IF WE GO BELOW. YOU DON'T.
IT'S A POINT OF PRIDE, BUT YOU DON'T SEE LONG STANDING AND AND IT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN TO US.
WE SHOULD BE IN A SUPERIOR RATING.
OUTSIDE INTERESTS, LOOKING AT THE VIABILITY OF THE SCHOOLS.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
KIM. LAURA, I DON'T HAVE A QUESTION, AND I'LL BE QUICK.
YOU SET IN HERE? IT SAYS EANES EARNED THE HIGHEST AVAILABLE RATING IN EACH OF THE YEARS.
THE SCHOOL FIRST HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE BEGINNING WITH 2003.
AND YOU'VE BEEN HERE FOR EVERY ONE OF THOSE YEARS? NO. OH.
I'VE BEEN HERE FOR EIGHT YEARS, BUT I'VE, I IN A DIFFERENT DISTRICT.
IN A DIFFERENT DISTRICT IN 2003.
OKAY. WELL I WAS GOING TO THE KUDOS STILL HOLD IS THAT AS I MOVE ABOUT AND TALKING WITH TRUSTEES AND ADMINISTRATORS FROM ACROSS THE STATE, OFTEN IN THE BACK OF MY MIND, I'M LIKE, OH, THEY DON'T HAVE A CHRIS SCOTT.
SO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK THAT YOU DO.
IT ALLOWS US TO DO THE WORK THAT WE NEED TO DO.
[00:20:04]
PHENOMENAL. AND I APPRECIATE I APPRECIATE THE SUPERIOR RATING.AND IT'S A PUT PUT THE PRAISE MORE ON MARIA THAN ON ME.
YEAH, I WAS JUST GOING TO TACK ON TO WHAT KIM WAS SAYING.
YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THIS IS AUTOPSY DATA.
I KIND OF EQUATE IT TO STAR, WHERE WE GET IT AFTER THE FACT.
AND SO I JUST KIND OF SEE IT, YOU KNOW, TO YOUR POINT AS ANOTHER, YOU KNOW, GREAT POINT OF PRIDE FOR OUR DISTRICT, BUT IT'S KIND OF THE SAME AS OUR END OF COURSE EXAMS. NO ONE'S ACTUALLY CARING ABOUT IT IN THE BROADER SCHEME.
I CAN'T EVEN SPEAK BROADER SCHEME OF THINGS.
SO THANK YOU FOR THE WORK THAT YOU GUYS DO.
I WISH THAT WE COULD SPEND OUR TIME DOING MORE MEANINGFUL THINGS, BUT I APPRECIATE THE REPORTS.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? THANK YOU, MR. SCOTT. YEAH.
ARE YOU STAYING? I THINK YOU'RE STAYING.
[10.1 Monthly Financial Report and Budget Amendment(s) for the Period Ending September 30]
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF INTERESTING THINGS THIS MONTH THAT I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT.CHIEF AMONG THEM IS, YOU KNOW, WE TALK A LITTLE BIT AND IT'S NOT ON HERE.
BUT IF YOU LOOK ON THE REPORT THAT I SENT YOU, YOU CAN SEE THAT OUR FUND BALANCE IN THE GENERAL FUND IS NEGATIVE RIGHT NOW.
WE TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW THE FUND BALANCE IS THAT WE TALK ABOUT IS A SNAPSHOT IN TIME.
AND IT GETS SMALLER, IT GETS BIGGER.
AND THIS IS AT A LULL WHERE IT'S GETTING SMALLER.
AND NEXT MONTH IT'LL BE THAT THE FUND BALANCE WILL BE EVEN MORE NEGATIVE.
NOW WE STILL HAVE MONEY BECAUSE THE BIGGEST LIABILITIES THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT RIGHT NOW, AGAIN, ARE THE RECAPTURE THAT WE'RE ATTRIBUTING TO THAT, THAT WE'VE, YOU KNOW, HAVE THAT RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THAT PAYMENT.
BUT AND WE HAVE PLENTY OF CASH TO GET US TO WHEN WE HAVE MONEY.
BUT JUST KEEP IN MIND THAT'S WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THE FUND BALANCE IS FOR IS TO GET US THROUGH THESE, THIS TIME FROM THE END OF JUNE TO WHEN WE START COLLECTING MONEY AGAIN IN DECEMBER, AND SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO OPERATE EVEN WHEN WE'RE NOT BRINGING IN MONEY.
AND IF YOU TOOK A SNAPSHOT OF OUR FUND BALANCE IN JANUARY, IT WOULD BE HUGE.
IT'S GOING TO BE 100 AND SOMETHING MILLION DOLLARS AT THAT TIME.
ALSO, YOU'LL NOTICE THAT THE TAX COLLECTION THIS MONTH WAS -$40,000, AND THAT'S BECAUSE OF THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SOMEBODY WHO WON AN APPEAL OF SOME SORT AND WERE GIVEN A REFUND ON TAXES THAT THEY'D ALREADY PAID.
OTHER THAN THAT STANDARD IDEA, WE DID SOME BUDGET AMENDMENTS THAT DIDN'T IMPACT THE PROJECTED FUND BALANCE IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT FUNDS.
AND IF YOU'VE GOT ANY QUESTIONS, I'D BE HAPPY TO ANSWER.
WE WILL HAVE MR. RAMSEY. THE SAUNDERS COME FORWARD.
[10.2 College Admissions Report]
AND MR. ZEMO. THAT'S A SINKING ONE TOO.YOU SEE HOW WE GET TREATED? RIGHT HERE. WHATEVER HAPPENS, HAPPENS.
ALL RIGHT, GET YOUR CAMERAS OUT.
I THINK. OH, THIS IS ON ALREADY.
HI. THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME FIGURE THIS OUT.
I REMEMBERED MY READING GLASSES THIS YEAR, SO I'M FEELING GOOD ALREADY.
SO I AM LISA SAUNDERS. I'M THE LEAD COUNSELOR AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL.
AND THIS IS MATT ZEMO, DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION, AND MR. RAMSEY, OUR FEARLESS PRINCIPAL.
[00:25:06]
SO LOOKING AT LAST YEAR'S GRADUATING CLASS OF 2023, DO I DO THE SLIDES? OH, BOY. THIS IS GETTING COMPLICATED.OKAY. OH, THAT'S NOT THE BEGINNING.
THIS IS THE SECOND HALF OF THE PRESENTATION.
LISA, WHY DON'T YOU GO AHEAD AND TALK THROUGH IT? AND IF YOU DON'T MIND, GIVE ME A MOMENT AND LET ME SEE IF I CAN FIND THOSE SLIDES FOR YOU.
OKAY. AND I HAVE A PRINTED COPY HERE, SO I'M.
IF YOU GUYS CAN ACCESS IT FROM YOUR.
OKAY, SO STARTING WITH THE CLASS OF 23.
BY THE NUMBERS, WE GRADUATED 691 STUDENTS LAST YEAR.
AND SO THE TOP 10% OF THAT CLASS INCLUDED 69 STUDENTS.
AND THE REASON THAT IS IMPORTANT IS BECAUSE IN TEXAS, THERE IS A LAW THAT INDICATES THAT THE TOP 10% OF EVERY GRADUATING CLASS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS GETS AUTOMATICALLY ADMITTED TO TEXAS PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
OUR TOP 10% RANGED FROM ABOUT A 103 TO.
OUR HIGHEST GRADE POINT AVERAGE WAS ABOUT 106.8.
WE HAD 35 NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS LAST YEAR, AND WE HAD 373 SENIORS TAKE NEARLY 1200 AP EXAMS DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL.
THAT WAS ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF THE EXAMS THAT WE ADMINISTERED LAST MAY.
GOING ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE IS A LITTLE GRAPH THAT SHOWS OUR 2023 OUTCOMES.
WE HAD A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS, OF COURSE, ATTENDING FOUR YEAR SCHOOLS.
SO WE HAD ABOUT 87.4% REPORT THAT THEY WOULD BE ATTENDING A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE AND ABOUT 7% GOING TO A TWO YEAR COLLEGE, A VERY TINY PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS CONTINUING AT ATS.
AND THEN WE HAVE A CATEGORY FOR OTHER, WHICH MIGHT INCLUDE GOING TO A TECHNICAL OR A TRADE SCHOOL, TAKING A GAP YEAR, GOING STRAIGHT INTO THE WORKFORCE, POSSIBLY JOINING THE MILITARY AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
SOME OF THE OPTIONS THAT OUR STUDENTS CHOSE ARE GOING TO FLIGHT SCHOOL PURSUING MUSIC ENGINEERING.
WE HAVE ONE ATTENDING AGGIE ACHIEVE AT TEXAS A&M, I BELIEVE, AND MR. ZEMO WILL TALK ABOUT THAT IN A FEW MINUTES.
WE HAD ONE REPORTING THAT THEY WERE GOING TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ARCHITECTURE APPRENTICESHIP.
SOME OF THE STUDENTS THAT WERE TAKING A GAP YEAR, MANY OF THEM WERE TRAVELING.
ONE IS GOING TO BE A SKI INSTRUCTOR IN NEW ZEALAND, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS AMAZING.
SO DEFINITELY KIND OF BROADENING HIS PERSPECTIVE OF THINGS.
SHE'S PLANNING TO APPLY TO A PROGRAM IN LOS ANGELES THAT FOCUSES ON ANIMATION AND VISUAL EFFECTS.
SO A LARGE VARIETY OF PURSUITS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE.
GOING AFTER AND THEN GOING TO LET MR. ZEMO TALK ABOUT ATS.
ALL RIGHT. SOME OF THE INFORMATION I'M GOING TO SHARE ABOUT ATS IS ONCE A STEP BACK TO MAYBE SOME FAMILIES THAT WERE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SEVERAL YEARS AGO, AND THEY DIDN'T IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITY OF POSSIBLY HAVING THEIR SON OR DAUGHTER GO TO A COLLEGE PROGRAM.
BUT WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT PARTNERSHIP AND OUR STUDENTS BEING ON THE FRONT EDGE OF THAT, OUT OF THE STUDENTS THAT WERE ATS LAST YEAR, EVERY SINGLE ONE THAT APPLIED TO A COLLEGE PROGRAM THAT'S LISTED UP HERE ON THE SCREEN WAS ACCEPTED.
[00:30:02]
FOUR YEAR COLLEGE IMMERSIVE PROGRAM.AND SO THE MOST RECENT ONE IN THE LAST ONE, LAST TIME WE WERE TOGETHER CAME ONLINE, WHICH WAS TEXAS STATE OPENED UP THEIR FIRST BOBCAT RISE LATE LAST SPRING AND WAS IN A HURRY TO GET APPLICANTS.
AND I THINK WE HAD A COUPLE STUDENTS APPLY.
SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT JUST THAT OPTION BEING NOW AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES THAT WANT TO CONTINUE ON WITH A POST-SECONDARY GOALS OF GOING TO COLLEGE.
I DIDN'T INCLUDE THIS GRAPH, BUT I DID SHOW IT AT THE MEET AND MINGLE LAST WEEK.
ONE OF THE REPORTING INDICATORS THAT WE USE THROUGH SPECIAL EDUCATION KIND OF MEASURES THE ONE YEAR OUT OF WHAT STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ARE REPORTING THEIR CHILD IS DOING AS IT RELATES TO HIGHER EDUCATION.
AND EANES ISD REPORTED THAT 79% OF THE STUDENTS THAT REPORTED SAID THEY ARE AT A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTE, IN CONTRAST TO 24% FOR THE STATE.
SO ABOUT THREE TIMES AS MANY STUDENTS REPORTED BEING AT A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION.
AND ALTHOUGH I'M JUST PRESENTING ON ATS, I DO WANT TO JUST RECOGNIZE THAT.
ON THE NEXT SLIDE, YOU'LL SEE WE HAVE CURATED ALL OF THE CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT WE'VE UNCOVERED IN THE STATE OF TEXAS AND OUTLINE THEM BASED ON THE COLLEGE, THE LOCATION, THE POPULATION THAT SERVED, THE TYPE OF PROGRAMING THAT THEY HAVE AVAILABLE, THE TYPE OF FUNDING THAT'S AVAILABLE, WHICH IS UNIQUE. SOME FUNDING CAN BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE STATE TO SUPPORT THESE PROGRAMS. AND WE DO BELIEVE IN CONTINUING EDUCATION, AND IT'S A VITAL ASPECT OF ATS AND JUST ALL OF OUR OUR STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY.
AND THEN THE LAST PIECE I'LL PLUG IS JUST THE WORK THAT THE WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUES TO DO WITH THEIR COLLEGE FAIRS AND EXPECTING COLLEGES THAT COME AND RECRUIT OUR STUDENTS, THAT THEY'RE BRINGING FULL INFORMATION ON INCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE AVAILABLE ALL THE WAY THROUGH JUST ACCESSIBILITY FEATURES AND MORE OF THE UNIQUE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE PROGRAM.
SO JUST KUDOS TO WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL FOR CONTINUING TO PARTNER WITH US ON THOSE PROGRAMS. OKAY. THEN THIS NEXT SLIDE SHOWS THE BANNER THAT WE HAVE HANGING IN THE COUNSELING OFFICE.
WE HAVE MANY PEOPLE COME IN TO LOOK AT IT WHEN THEY'RE VISITING CAMPUS.
JUST OVER HALF OF OUR STUDENTS DECIDED TO STAY IN TEXAS.
AND THEN WE HAVE 87 STUDENTS THAT ARE ATTENDING A COLLEGE THAT NO ONE ELSE IN THEIR GRADUATING CLASS IS ATTENDING, AND I ALWAYS FIND THAT INTERESTING, JUST THAT THEY HAVE THE COURAGE TO GO OUT THERE AND GO TO A SCHOOL THAT NONE OF THEIR FRIENDS OR CLASSMATES WILL BE AT.
SO I ALWAYS LIKE TO MAKE NOTE OF THAT AS WELL.
AND THEN YOU'LL NOTICE THERE'S TWO SCHOOLS THAT ARE LISTED AT NUMBER NINE.
THAT'S BECAUSE THERE'S THE SAME NUMBER OF STUDENTS GOING TO THOSE TWO SCHOOLS.
WE DO HAVE SO RICE MOVED INTO THE TOP TEN LIST THIS YEAR.
WE HAD SIX STUDENTS ATTENDING RICE FROM LAST YEAR'S CLASS.
AND THE ONE THAT FELL OUT WAS UT DALLAS, BUT THEY WERE AT NUMBER 13, SO NOT SUPER FAR DOWN THE LIST.
THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS THE TOP 20 COLLEGES THAT OUR STUDENTS APPLIED TO AND THE BIGGEST JUMPS ON HERE WERE THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI AND ALSO THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE.
I ACTUALLY HAD A STUDENT COME IN TODAY THAT WAS TALKING ABOUT OLE MISS, AND I ASKED HER, WHY DO YOU THINK SO MANY STUDENTS ARE APPLYING TO OLE MISS THESE DAYS? AND SHE INDICATED THAT FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE, THIS IS A STRONG SAFETY SCHOOL.
SO IT'S SOMETHING THAT THEY FEEL PRETTY CONFIDENT THAT THEY CAN GET INTO.
AND THEN TENNESSEE IS MORE OF A SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FOCUSED SCHOOL.
SO WE OBVIOUSLY HAVE A LOT OF INTEREST IN THOSE AREAS AS WELL.
AND THE NEXT SLIDE IS THE TOP 20 COLLEGES BY ADMITTED STUDENTS.
[00:35:02]
THE BIGGEST JUMP HERE WAS OKLAHOMA, WHICH HURTS MY LONGHORN HEART.BUT THAT IS OKAY, WE WILL MOVE ON.
AND AGAIN, THE PLUSES AND MINUSES HERE SHOW THE DIFFERENCE IN RANKING FOR THAT PARTICULAR SCHOOL.
SO YOU CAN SEE HOW THEY MOVED UP OR DOWN.
OKLAHOMA WAS NEW TO THE TOP 20.
AND THEN ARIZONA AND ARIZONA STATE ALSO MOVED UP INTO THE TOP 20.
AND SCHOOLS THAT FELL OUT WERE CLEMSON, GEORGIA AND ACC.
WHICH I MEAN, SEC WAS GOING TO ADMIT ANY STUDENT THAT GRADUATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL.
SO IT JUST MEANS THAT WE HAD FEWER STUDENTS APPLY THERE THIS YEAR.
COMPARED TO THE OTHER SCHOOLS.
MCGILL IS ONE OF THE COLLEGES IN CANADA THAT WE HAD A LOT OF INTEREST IN.
WE ACTUALLY HAVE FIVE STUDENTS GOING THERE THE YEAR BEFORE WE HAD ZERO.
SO I FOUND THAT TO BE REALLY INTERESTING.
AND THEN THE NEXT SLIDE SHOWS A SELECT LIST OF HIGHLY SELECTIVE COLLEGES.
THE NUMBERS IN PARENTHESES REPRESENT LAST YEAR'S DATA, SO YOU CAN KIND OF COMPARE HOW MANY STUDENTS APPLIED, ADMITTED AND ARE ATTENDING EACH OF THOSE SCHOOLS COMPARED TO WHAT WE HAD THE YEAR BEFORE.
I CAN. I DO LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT.
THE SLIDE IS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT BECAUSE I DON'T.
I. WE ARE VERY CAUTIONARY ABOUT STUDENTS APPLYING TO SELECTIVE SCHOOLS.
AND I CAN GIVE YOU TWO EXAMPLES OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD RIGHT NOW OF STUDENTS THAT GOT INTO ONE OF THESE SCHOOLS, BUT ENDED UP MAKING A DIFFERENT CHOICE FOR THEMSELVES BECAUSE THESE WEREN'T THE BEST FIT FOR THEM.
ONE OF THEM GOT INTO DUKE BUT CHOSE TO ATTEND UT AUSTIN.
HE WAS A COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR AND FELT LIKE UT AUSTIN WAS GOING TO GIVE HIM EARLIER ACCESS TO UPPER LEVEL COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES, SO HE ENDED UP GOING THERE INSTEAD OF DUKE. AND THEN ANOTHER STUDENT WAS ACCEPTED TO RICE, BUT HIS CHOSE TO GO TO TULSA.
SO I'M ALWAYS IMPRESSED, I GUESS WHEN STUDENTS KIND OF MAKE THESE DIFFICULT CHOICES, BUT ARE REALLY CHOOSING SCHOOLS THAT ARE THE BEST FIT FOR THEM, BECAUSE THAT'S DEFINITELY THE MESSAGE THAT WE TRY TO DRIVE HOME WITH THEM.
THIS NEXT SLIDE HERE ADDRESSES THE TOP TEN OR TOP 6%.
AGAIN, WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER THE AUTOMATIC ADMISSIONS RULE.
UT IS AGAIN ONLY REQUIRED TO ADMIT THE TOP 6% OF THEIR STUDENTS.
SO THAT TOP NUMBER, THE TOP ROW TALKS ABOUT THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT WERE ADMITTED AUTOMATICALLY.
WE HAVE A LARGE PORTION OF OUR TOP 10% DON'T DIDN'T EVEN APPLY TO UT OR A&M AT ALL.
I'M SORRY, TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY, BUT THE BOTTOM ROW IS REALLY I THINK WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT ON THIS SLIDE SHOWS THE PERCENTAGE OF OUR STUDENTS THAT WERE ADMITTED UNDER HOLISTIC REVIEW.
SO THESE SCHOOLS ARE ONLY REQUIRED TO ADMIT 75% OF EACH CLASS USING THE TOP 10% OR TOP 6% RULE.
THEY ARE ALLOWED TO ADMIT STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF THOSE PERCENTAGES.
AND ARE YOU SUGGESTING MORE UNDER HOLISTIC REVIEW? THERE WERE.
I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK THE RAW DATA ON THAT.
THIS IS SHOWING OF THE STUDENTS THAT GOT ADMITTED, HOW MANY WERE IN THE TOP 10% AND HOW MANY WERE UNDER HOLISTIC REVIEW? IT'S NOT NECESSARILY THE NUMBER OF OUR STUDENTS THAT WERE ADMITTED ALTOGETHER.
[00:40:05]
THE NEXT SLIDE HERE SHOWS JUST A KIND OF A RANDOM SAMPLING OF OTHER COLLEGES THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE ATTENDING.WE DID HAVE ONE TO GET INTO JUILLIARD, WHICH I WAS SUPER EXCITED ABOUT.
HE HAPPENED TO BE IN MY CASELOAD.
BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC, OF COURSE, IS SUPER, COMPETITIVE AS WELL.
SO AGAIN, A REALLY NICE VARIETY OF SCHOOLS THAT OUR KIDS ARE ATTENDING.
AS WE SEND THEM OFF TO COLLEGE.
MANY OF OUR STUDENTS WILL HAVE ALREADY EARNED SOME COLLEGE CREDITS WHILE THEY WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
PATHS TO DOING THAT WE OFFER AT WESTLAKE.
DUAL CREDIT MEANS THAT STUDENTS ARE EARNING BOTH A HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AND A COLLEGE CREDIT THROUGH THE SAME COURSE THAT THEY'RE TAKING THROUGH THROUGH AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE. MOST OF OUR STUDENTS THAT CHOOSE TO TAKE DUAL CREDIT DO SO IN THE SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES.
U.S HISTORY IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ONES, GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS AS WELL.
AND THEN OF COURSE WE DO HAVE SOME STUDENTS CHOOSE THE FINE ARTS, HEALTH OR WORLD LANGUAGES.
THIS LAST SUMMER, WE HAD 69 STUDENTS TAKE 135 COURSES THROUGH DUAL CREDIT.
AND THEN THROUGH OUR AP PROGRAM, WE HAD OVER 1400 STUDENTS TAKE NEARLY 3500 EXAMS, MOSTLY IN A TWO WEEK PERIOD, PLUS A FEW THAT TEST DURING THE LATE TESTING WINDOW.
SO THAT IS ANOTHER GREAT WAY FOR KIDS TO EARN COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
AP, OF COURSE, IS A MORE WIDELY RECOGNIZED PROGRAM.
OKAY, NOW I'M GOING TO LET MR. RAMSEY TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE AP PROGRAM.
WE'RE GOING TO GO BACK TO THE OTHER ONE, DR.
ALL RIGHTY. SO DEFINITELY WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR AP PROGRAM HERE.
WE OFFER A VARIETY OF COURSES.
ONE THING WE DO AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL IS OFFER AP OR ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO AS WE GO THROUGH THIS PRESENTATION, A COUPLE OF THINGS I WANT YOU TO KNOW RIGHT AWAY.
MOST OF THE OTHER SCHOOLS THAT WE WILL TALK ABOUT, ESPECIALLY SOME OF OUR CONSORTIUM, ARE VERY HEAVY IN PREREQUISITES, AND THEY START BUILDING THAT CAPACITY IN SIXTH GRADE OR SIXTH GRADERS. SO AS WE KIND OF TALK ABOUT THIS, KNOW THAT WE'RE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT WHEN IT COMES TO HOW WE KIND OF VIEW OUR AP ENROLLMENT AND OUR COURSES.
SO WHAT IS AN AP COURSE? THEY'RE DEFINITELY PROVIDE A TRY TO PROVIDE THAT IN-DEPTH LEARNING.
THEY DEFINITELY GET MORE INTO THE CONTENT AREA.
AND A LOT OF WAYS OUR NON AP CLASSES ARE TAUGHT AT THE TEACHER LEVEL.
THIS IS KIND OF AN EXTENSION OF THAT DEFINITELY WHEN IT COMES TO COGNITIVE CHALLENGE, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE GET SOME COGNITIVE DISSONANCE WHERE KIDS CAN LEARN SOME VERY DIFFICULT SUBJECTS.
DEFINITELY A LITTLE MORE EXTENSIVE INTERACTION WITH THE IDEAS.
AND THAT'S THE WAY YOU LEARN THE BEST.
AND SO THAT'S ONE THING THEY DEFINITELY DO.
AND OF COURSE, ALONG THE WAY YOU DO A LOT OF DEEP THINKING ON THE WAY.
AND AND I'VE BEEN HERE A LONG TIME AS BALTHAZAR.
AND WE'LL KIND OF HIT SOME OF THIS AND SOME OF THIS.
YOU'LL BE VERY HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS WHEN IT COMES TO THIS.
SO THERE'S SOME INTERESTING DATA THAT HAS COME ABOUT WHETHER IT'S BEEN THROUGH CHALLENGE SUCCESS, JUST OUR IDEOLOGY AS A CAMPUS THAT IT'S IMPORTANT YOU TAKE THE CLASSES YOU WANT TO STEM KIDS GO BE A STEM KID.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE AP ENGLISH AND STILL GO TO MIT.
DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE FOUR YEARS OF A WORLD LANGUAGE JUST BECAUSE STANFORD SAYS YOU DO.
YOU CAN STILL GET INTO STANFORD.
[00:45:05]
STRUCTURED, HIGHLY VALUABLE HUMANITIES PROGRAM IN COLLEGE.HIGHLAND PARK AND THE OTHER FOLKS IN OUR CONSORTIUM GIGGLED OUT LOUD AT THAT FACT.
THEY WERE LIKE, THAT'S ABSURD.
SO KIDS ARE MAKING SOME GOOD DECISIONS THAT JUST KIND OF COME ABOUT THE LAST, I'D SAY 4 OR 5 YEARS, BUT IT'S KIND OF HITTING AT THE RIGHT MOMENT AND KIDS ARE STILL GETTING SOME GREAT SCHOOLS THAT THE PROGRAM SAID.
MR. ZEMO WAS A COLLABORATE TEACHER AND ALGEBRA ONE.
WE'RE UP TO NINE SECTIONS, SO THAT MAY NOT SEEM HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT, BUT IF YOU'VE SEEN THAT MANY MORE STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ACCELERATING AND STILL GETTING SOME FINE UNIVERSITIES, THAT'S ONE FOR YOU.
AP WORLD HISTORY? WHEN I GOT BACK IN 16, WE HAD FOUR DIFFERENT TEACHERS TEACHING AP WORLD HISTORY.
WE'RE DOWN TO EIGHT SECTIONS AND NOW WE HAVE 17 NON AP SECTIONS.
WE HAVE FULL AP FIVE AP BIO CLASSES WHICH IS RATHER LARGE FOR A SCHOOL OF OUR SIZE.
WE HAVE FIVE AP CHEMISTRY SECTIONS AS WELL AS TWO ORGANICS.
SO WE'RE PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT THAT FOR SURE, WHEN IT COMES TO OUR OTHER CLASSES BESIDES JUST AP.
STEVE, BEFORE YOU LEAVE THAT CAN I ASK A QUESTION? AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS DATA.
AND THE PRESSURE AND SO CHALLENGE SUCCESS.
ALL OF THAT WAS SO IMPORTANT WHEN WE CHANGED THE GRADE POINT WEIGHTINGS, WHAT FIVE YEARS AGO? THAT WAS MY FIRST YEAR SO THAT'S EIGHT YEARS.
EIGHT YEARS, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUN.
IT DIDN'T GO INTO EFFECT THOUGH FOR FOUR BECAUSE WE HAD THE GRANDFATHER.
RIGHT. AND SO AN EIGHTH GRADER.
SO WHERE ARE THE KIDS NOW? IS THIS SENIOR CLASS THE FIRST SENIOR CLASS THAT'S BEEN THROUGH ALL FOUR YEARS OR THE SECOND SENIOR.
THIS SHOULD BE THE SECOND OR THIRD AND SECOND OR THIRD.
OKAY. SO AND DO YOU THINK THAT HAD HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH PART OF OUR OBJECTIVE WAS TO SEE IF WE COULDN'T BALANCE THINGS BETTER.
I WOULD SAY YES. I CAN'T QUANTIFY THAT, BUT I WOULD SAY YES.
I THINK ALSO JUST THE INTENSE NATURE OF THE COLLEGE PROCESS NOW OF ADMISSIONS.
AND WE HAVE KIDS WHO EXACTLY THE SAME GPA WHO ARE BEING TOLD, MATT, YOU GET IN, STEVE.
YOU DON'T. AND THEY KNOW BECAUSE THEY'RE BEST FRIENDS.
THEY HAVE THE SAME EXACT GPA, ALMOST SAME ACTIVITIES.
WHY DID I GET DEFERRED AND NOT AND SO THEY'RE SEEING OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT.
YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO HAVE TO CAST A WIDE NET OR REALLY ZONE IN ON THE ONES THAT YOU REALLY WANT.
AND I THINK THAT I THINK BOTH OF THOSE THINGS HAVE HELPED.
IT WAS AN INFLATOR. I THINK IT DEFINITELY HAS CHANGED KIDS PERSPECTIVE FIVE VERSUS TEN, BECAUSE AM I GOING TO SPEND THAT MUCH MORE TIME SAYING AN AP COURSE? I DON'T LIKE ENGLISH. I HATE TO WRITE, BUT GIVE ME MATH ALL NIGHT.
I'M NOT GOING TO SPEND THOSE EXTRA THREE HOURS ON AN ESSAY TO GET THAT PLUS TEN, YOU KNOW, FROM AN 84 TO A 94 VERSUS IF I CAN BE IN A VERY WELL STRUCTURED, VERY WELL PERFORMING ENGLISH CLASS TAUGHT BY SOME OF OUR TOP INSTRUCTORS, LIKE MAYBE LEE BERGEN.
[INAUDIBLE] IS LIKE, YEAH, I'M TAKING STATS BEFORE, YOU KNOW, WE FIRST OFFERED STATS, THAT WAS NOT NECESSARILY WHAT DOES THAT MEAN YOU'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE, YOU KNOW, CALCULUS? I'LL NEVER TAKE CALCULUS IN MY LIFE.
I KNOW I'M NOT GOING TO MAJOR IN THAT.
AND BECAUSE SOME OF THESE UNIVERSITIES, I THINK IT'S ONE OF THE CAUSE AND EFFECTS WE TALK ABOUT ALL THE TIME, TOO, IS SOME UNIVERSITIES NOW SAY WHATEVER MAJOR YOU CHOOSE AND WHATEVER, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER COLLEGE THAT'S IN, YOU CAN'T GO DOWN.
I MEAN, YOU CAN GO DOWN, BUT YOU CAN'T GO UP.
I CAN GO DOWN. BUT KIDS ARE HAVING TO PREDETERMINE THEIR.
MAJOR MUCH SOONER THAN THEY USED TO.
[00:50:02]
I'M GOING TO GO TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AND HANG OUT.IT'S DEFINITELY CHANGED HOW THAT LOOKS, NO SLACKING.
I GRADUATED 180 SOMETHING HOURS FROM UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS.
I'VE ONLY KNOWN ONE PERSON WHO GRADUATED MORE THAN ME AND THEY SPENT SEVEN YEARS.
I ONLY SPENT FIVE. I'M VERY PROUD OF THAT.
BUT IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT IT'S CHANGED BECAUSE YOU CAN'T DO THAT.
THOSE THINGS DON'T HAPPEN ANYMORE.
THEY'RE RANKED. I HAVE TO STAY IN THAT SCHOOL.
AND SO KIDS MAKE THOSE DECISIONS A LITTLE BIT MORE INTENSELY.
NOW THEY KNOW THE GAME A LITTLE BIT BETTER.
I THINK WHEN IT COMES TO THAT.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT INFORMATION.
A LOT OF IT IS BASED UPON THE YEARS THEY'VE BEEN THERE, WHETHER THEY'RE NEW.
AND WHEN WE INTERVIEW FOLKS, WHETHER WE THINK THEY WILL FIT BEST WITH THE TEAM, WITH OUR PLC MODEL THAT WE HAVE, AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE SOME VETERANS WHO ARE LIKE, I'D LIKE TO MAYBE NOT TEACH AP ALL THE TIME BECAUSE THERE'S BURDENS THAT COME WITH EVERYTHING, AND THERE'S DIFFERENT FREEDOMS THAT YOU GET WITH DIFFERENT SUBJECTS.
AND I THINK THAT WE'VE ALLOWED PEOPLE TO COME TALK TO US ABOUT WHAT THEY MAY WANT TO TEACH MORE, THEN ALSO MAYBE HELP STEER THEM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION ON MAYBE WHAT OUR KIDS NEED MORE, AND WE HAVE MORE PEOPLE WITH SPLIT SCHEDULES THAN WE USED TO AS WELL.
NOW, TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A SPLIT SCHEDULE.
SO WE'RE AND THEN WE FOUND DIFFERENT PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY.
ONE OF THEM THERE'S ALWAYS THINGS YOU LOOK BACK ON YOUR CAREER.
WE HAVE ONE OF OUR PEOPLE TEACHING UPPER LEVEL MATH.
SO A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS AND COUNSELORS ON WHAT WE HEAR AND WHAT THEY COULD REALLY THRIVE IN, AND TALKING TO THE STUDENTS AS WELL, BECAUSE WE GET FEEDBACK THROUGH OUR ANONYMOUS REPORTING SYSTEM.
AND SOMETIMES WHEN THEY'RE GOING REALLY WELL, THAT'S JUST KIND OF HOW OUR KIDS DO.
I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO TEACH MAYBE THIS LEVEL OF SCIENCE.
WELL, LET'S GIVE IT A WHIRL AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
SO WE KIND OF HAVE A GOOD TIME WITH IT.
OKAY, SO WE DO HAVE A 36 TO 39.
AND THEN ONE REASON IT'S 36 OUT OF 39.
WE DID ADD IN AP PRE CAL THIS YEAR.
SO THAT DID GIVE STUDENTS A CHANCE ALSO MAYBE TO IF THEY'RE ON THE NORMAL TRACK OF MATH NON ADVANCED AS A FRESHMAN ALGEBRA ONE GEOMETRY ALGEBRA TWO AS A JUNIOR YOU CAN TAKE AN AP COURSE.
SO WE THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD MOVE BY AP.
IF YOU HAD A STUDENT TAKE AN AP SCORE BEFORE YOU KNOW 3 TO 5.
THOSE ARE WONDERFUL. YOU'RE GOING TO GET CREDIT FOR THOSE ONES, AND TWOS ARE BAD.
THAT'S PRETTY SIMPLISTIC HOW THEY GET FROM 1 TO 5.
ONES AND TWOS PEOPLE ARE CRUSHED.
IT USED TO BE, YOU KNOW, IF I GET INTO UNIVERSITY, I DON'T KNOW NAME ANY SCHOOL YOU WANT TO.
IT WAS SECRETIVE ABOUT I GOT ADMITTED NOW HOW MUCH HOW MANY HOURS OF CREDIT I'M GOING TO GET? WELL, NOW THEY PUT IT OUT THERE.
IF YOU HAD A LOT OF OUR ESPECIALLY STATE SCHOOLS, YOU JUST PUT IN, YOU KNOW, UNIVERSITY OR WHATEVER AP SCORES AND WHAT IT GOES TO, THEY'LL ACTUALLY GIVE YOU IF YOU'VE GOT A 4 OR 5 AND AP ENGLISH THREE, BOOM, YOU'RE GOING TO GET 6 HOURS OR 3 HOURS, OR YOU MAY GET THE PRE REQ WAIVED OR YOU MIGHT GET PLACED.
YOU KNOW. SO THEY'RE VERY OUT THERE.
SO OUR KIDS NOW KNOW GOING INTO IT BECAUSE OF MONEY THAT'S INVOLVED AS WELL.
SO THE COLLEGES I THINK HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB WITH THAT.
IT'S PRETTY UP FRONT NOW WHEN IT COMES TO THAT.
SO THIS IS THE SLIDE THAT WE'RE AWFUL PROUD OF AS WELL.
JUST TO KIND OF GIVE A CONTEXT, BACK IN 16 WE WERE RUNNING AT 74%.
AND SO EVERY YEAR EXCEPT FOR THE 2021 YEAR, WE'VE KIND OF SEE JUMPS.
WE WENT INTO THE 80S AND WE'VE BEEN HANGING OUT THERE.
HOWEVER, YOU WANT TO USE THAT TERM TO DESCRIBE HOW HIGH THAT IS.
THE NATIONAL AND GLOBAL AVERAGES ON MOST OF AP SCORES ARE BETWEEN LIKE 52 AND 53 TO ABOUT 61, 62%.
[00:55:06]
SO REMEMBER WE TALKED ABOUT IN THE CONSORTIUM GROUP.SO I WILL TELL YOU THIS, THAT THIS SCORE AND THIS REPORT HERE, THERE ARE SEVERAL HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND AND DISTRICTS THAT ARE USING THIS AS THEIR MODEL NOW ON WHAT THEY NEED TO SHOOT FOR. AND THEY WANTED TO COMPARE SCORES AND WE SAID NO.
REMEMBER WE'RE OPEN ENROLLMENT.
THAT'S DIFFERENT. A LOT OF THE SCHOOLS, ESPECIALLY THROUGHOUT THE US, THEY ARE YOU KNOW, YOU'VE GOT TO BE WHETHER YOU'RE GT WE GET YOU ON A TRACK AND THEN YOU CAN HAVE THE BENEFIT. WE DO HAVE JUNIORS AND SENIORS WHO TAKE THEIR FIRST AP CLASS AS JUNIORS AND SENIORS.
AND WE ALSO HAVE A NICE DROP, NOT A DROP, BUT A LEVEL DOWN POLICY.
WE GIVE THEM A FULL SIX WEEKS, WHICH IS NICE AS WELL.
UM, DO WE HAVE ANY DATA THAT TELLS US HOW MANY KIDDOS ARE TAKING AP CLASSES BUT AREN'T TAKING THE EXAMS? I DON'T HAVE HARD DATA HERE, BUT I WILL KIND OF PIGGYBACKING ON WHAT MR. RAMSEY WAS SAYING EARLIER, BECAUSE THE COLLEGES DO PUBLICIZE WHAT CREDIT CAN BE EARNED ONCE THOSE KIDS KNOW, ESPECIALLY THE SENIORS, WHEN THEY KNOW WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO COLLEGE, THEY DO THE RESEARCH.
AND SO THEY'RE SPENDING THEIR TIME STUDYING FOR THE EXAMS. OR THEY CAN GET CREDIT AND PURSUING THOSE.
BUT LETTING OFF ON THE OTHERS, WHICH TO ME SEEMS LIKE A WISE DECISION.
THERE'S MUCH BENEFIT TO BE GAINED FROM TAKING THE COURSE AT ALL.
GREAT. THANK YOU. SO WE HAVE IT ON HERE ABOUT HIGHLY SELECTIVE UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES.
AND REMEMBER, THIS IS THE ONE THAT OUR HIGHLY SELECTIVE KIDS LOOK AT.
THEY KIND OF ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT.
BUT ON THE RESUMES THEY'LL HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF THEIR AP COURSES LISTED.
SO THIS IS KIND OF INTERESTING SLIDE THAT DEFINITELY THE BENEFITS.
THERE ARE STUDENTS WHO'VE NEVER TAKEN AN AP COURSE.
THEY GET IT. AND LET ME TELL YOU WHAT.
AND IT'S A HUGE ADVANTAGE THAT OUR KIDS HAVE CONFIDENCE WISE.
THEY DON'T HAVE TO TAKE A PRE-REQ.
WHAT IT DOES FOR THAT STUDENT WHEN THEY TAKE THE RISK, THEY GET IT, THEY ACHIEVE IT, AND THEY FEEL VERY EMPOWERED ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO BECAUSE THEY KNOW OUR COURSES ARE PRETTY TOUGH. THEY KNOW AP IS TOUGH, AND SO THAT JUST BUILDS A LOT OF CAPACITY BEFORE THEY GO OFF.
SO IT GOES ALONG WITH THE RIGOROUS COURSEWORK.
ALSO, WE JUST MENTIONED THE TEXAS HOUSE BILL THREE OR HIGHER.
YOU'RE GOING TO GET COLLEGE CREDIT ON WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE AND KIND OF PIGGYBACK ON WHAT LISA SAID.
SOME UNIVERSITIES, IF YOU SAY ENGLISH THREE AP YOU GET A FIVE ON THAT.
THEY'RE GOING TO MAX OUT AT SIX HOURS AFTER THEIR JUNIOR YEAR WHEN THEY GO TO THAT UNIVERSITY.
THE POTENTIAL SAVINGS ON COLLEGE TUITION.
IF YOU DO LOOK, IT'S REALLY AMAZING TO ME, AS YOU MAY NOT EVEN KNOW HOW MANY AP COURSES YOUR STUDENT HAS TAKEN UNTIL THEY START DOING THE MATH AND THEY FIGURE OUT I MIGHT BE GOING IN AS A, YOU KNOW, A SECOND SEMESTER FRESHMAN, OR I MAY ENTER AS A SOPHOMORE.
IT'S VERY EYE OPENING TO THEM ON WHAT IMPACT THEY'VE MADE IN COLLEGE.
I MEAN, IN HIGH SCHOOL AS THEY GO INTO COLLEGE.
SO AND I THINK ALL PARENTS LIKE TO SAVE MONEY FOR SURE.
AND I TELL THE SENIORS ALL THE TIME THAT WHEN YOU GO OFF TO SCHOOL YOU'RE GOING TO BE PREPARED.
WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO COME BACK ALL THE TIME BECAUSE I KIND OF CHALLENGED THEM A LITTLE BIT AND THEY COME BACK AND YOU GOT THE SASSY ONES WILL COME BACK AND TELL YOU I WASN'T READY, BUT THAT HASN'T HAPPENED YET.
AND THEY COME BACK AND SAY IT.
AND I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THEY DO IS BECAUSE WE HAVE THE SMALLER CLASSES, THEY GET THREE TIMES LONGER WITH THE CONTENT, AND I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING YOU CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THAT INSTEAD OF THE 15 WEEKS, THEY'RE GOING TO GET A FULL YEAR, AND ESPECIALLY AND I ALWAYS GO BACK AND THIS IS WHY I LOVE A TRADITIONAL BELL SCHEDULE THAT'S EIGHT PERIODS A
[01:00:01]
DAY. IF I HAVE A MENTOR TEACHER THAT I LOVE AND ADORE AS A 16, 17 OR 18 YEAR OLD, I WANT TO BE WITH THEM EVERY DAY BECAUSE I'M GOING TO LEARN FROM THEM.AND I JUST HAVE TWO THAT ARE FIXING TO GRADUATE, WHO CAN TELL YOU WHO'S MADE AN IMPACT, THAT IF THEY HAD A SHORTENED DAY AND THEY DIDN'T GET TO SEE THE TEACHER, THEY KNOW THEY HAD TO LEAVE AN AFTERNOON CLASS BECAUSE THE ACTIVITIES, THEY WERE NOT HAPPY BECAUSE THE IMPACT OF THAT MENTOR, AND WE ALL KNOW THAT'S ONE OF THE BIGGEST KEYS TO FIGURING OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU HAVE A REALLY STRONG MENTOR.
AND I THINK WE HAVE LOTS OF THOSE AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL, FOR SURE.
AND OBVIOUSLY THE TIME MANAGEMENT THAT GOES INTO SOME OF THESE COURSES ARE RATHER EXTREME AT TIMES, DEPENDING ON HOW MANY YOU'RE TAKING, BECAUSE YOU TELL KIDS WHAT YOU'RE TAKING 15 TO 18 HOURS AND YOU'RE TRYING TO DO ALL THESE OTHER THINGS AND YOU GET TO COLLEGE, YOU WON'T.
YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE 12 OR 15 HOURS AND YOU GET TO DO WHAT YOU WANT.
THEY GET PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
THEY KNOW HOW TO STUDY. THEY DON'T HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO STUDY.
AND THAT SAVES A LOT OF TIME COMPARED TO A LOT OF OTHER KIDS AT A LOT OF OTHER SCHOOLS.
AND I THINK THE STRENGTH OF OUR PROGRAM IS OUR TEACHERS, FOR SURE.
A LOT OF SCHOOLS ONLY DO IT EVERY FIVE YEARS, MAYBE EVERY THREE.
BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO, YOU CAN.
WE HAVE A HIGH NUMBER OF FOLKS WHO ARE ALSO READERS AT THESE.
THEY ACTUALLY GO IN AND READER MEANS THEY GRADE THE AP EXAMS. AND SO WE HAVE A LOT OF TEACHERS WHO GO AND DO THAT, BECAUSE IT'S JUST ANOTHER WAY TO NETWORK AND GET GREAT CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY.
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET BETTER AT TEACHING? AND YOU SPEND A WEEK WITH SOME OF THE MOST FANTASTIC TEACHERS IN THE CURRICULUM AREA.
YOU'RE GOING TO GROW. AND SO THAT'S ONE THING WE ALSO ENDORSE AS WELL.
AND THEN WE TRY TO MENTOR AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
SO THAT'S KIND OF AN ANY MORE QUESTIONS YOU HAVE FOR US? START WITH DIANE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
THIS IS A TOPIC THAT I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT A LOT OVER THE YEARS AND BEEN INVOLVED IN CHALLENGE SUCCESS.
AS YOU KNOW, I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS JOTTED DOWN.
WE KNOW THAT IT'S AP CLASSES THAT GET THE TEN POINT BUMPS.
DOES THAT CONTINUALLY BEING REEVALUATED SO THAT KIDS AREN'T DISCOURAGED FROM TAKING THINGS LIKE ROBOTICS? AND HOW DO WE MAKE THOSE DECISIONS? SO WHEN IT CAME TO WE WENT THROUGH THE GPA ADJUSTMENT, WHATEVER WE WANT TO CALL IT.
YEAH. AND WE HAVEN'T DONE IT FOR A WHILE BECAUSE I THINK THIS ONE'S WORKING.
THE PLUS TEN WAS THE POINT TWO MULTIPLIER AND THE PLUS FIVE WAS THE POINT ONE MULTIPLIER.
YEAH. AND SO ANYTIME WE HAVE A NEW COURSE NOW.
WE'RE NOT GOING TO GIVE ANYTHING PLUS TEN UNLESS IT'S AN AP COURSE.
SO THEN YOU GET TO THE HONORS COURSES WHICH ARE PLUS FIVE, AND THEN YOU DO HAVE SOME NEW COURSES.
AND YOU GUYS VOTED. THAT WAS PROBABLY WORTH IT.
SO WE LEAVE THOSE CASE BY CASE, AND THERE WAS A TIME, AND IT'S JUST HISTORY THAT WE WERE INCENTIVIZING COURSES AND PEOPLE WERE COMING FORWARD SAYING, HEY, YOU GET THE MULTIPLIER. AND THEN SO WE HAD KIDS WHO WERE DOING THAT, I MEAN, NOT KIDS.
IT WAS ACTUALLY TEACHERS BRINGING US FORWARD TO TRY TO BUILD A NEW PROGRAM.
AND SO THOSE THAT HAS CURTAILED, AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE DON'T WANT TO DO.
WE THINK WE'VE GOT A PRETTY GOOD SYSTEM GOING.
AND JUST TO GET SOME KIDS IN A NEW COURSE, WE DON'T THINK WE SHOULD HAVE TO DO THAT FOR SURE.
AND THAT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE'VE TRIED TO STAY ON TOP OF OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS, FOR SURE.
BUT IT MADE ME THINK ABOUT THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH, YOU KNOW, MY OWN DAUGHTER PARTICIPATED IN.
IT WAS I FIND IT TO BE JUST AN INCREDIBLE PROGRAM THAT WE OFFER.
IS THAT WHAT IS THAT ENROLLMENT LIKE? I THINK IT'S STAYED PRETTY STEADY.
I KNOW THAT WE'VE HAD TWO TEACHERS DOING THAT FOR A WHILE NOW.
AND SO, I MEAN, WE USUALLY HAVE, I'D SAY 10 TO 12 SECTIONS OF THAT RATHER EASILY EACH YEAR NOW.
AND I LOVE THE DISCUSSION ABOUT KIDS CHOOSING THE CLASSES THAT REALLY INSPIRE THEM.
HAVE YOU SEEN A DIFFERENCE IN THE CULTURE OF KIDS, REALLY? VYING FOR THAT TOP 10%.
NOW THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S REALLY THE HOLISTIC REVIEW, OR DO YOU STILL SEE A LOT OF COMPETITION TO JUST GET INTO THAT TOP 10%? IS IT PRETTY? YOU KNOW, IT WAS KIND OF CUTTHROAT BEFORE, THAT WAS A CONCERN.
[01:05:03]
YEAH, AND I WAS NOT HERE BEFORE, THAT WAS BEFORE MY TIME.IT THERE IS DEFINITELY SOME SIGNIFICANT COMPETITION GOING ON THERE.
I DON'T KNOW HOW IT COMPARES, THOUGH TO BEFORE.
THE COMPETITIVE NATURE IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE THERE.
I THINK THE KIDS WHO WANT TO BE AT THE TOP, THEY'RE GOING TO DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO GET THERE.
BUT I DO THINK WHAT THE CULTURE CHANGE HAS BEEN, YOU KNOW, ONE THING WE USED TO SAY THAT WHEN WE USED TO GIVE OUT THE FIRST GPA AS SECOND SEMESTER SOPHOMORES, IT JUST CRUSHED KIDS BECAUSE WE WERE DOING TOP TEN, FIRST QUARTER, SECOND QUARTER, THIRD QUARTER, FOURTH QUARTER.
WE HAD KIDS LIKE IN THE THIRD AND FOURTH QUARTER WHO WERE VERY BRIGHT, DOING VERY WELL.
LIKE, HOW DO I HAVE, I DON'T KNOW, AN AMBIGUOUS 97 GPA.
I'M IN THE THIRD QUARTER. THAT'S RIDICULOUS.
AND NOW I CAN'T GET INTO SCHOOLS.
I THINK THAT'S STILL IN THE TOP 10%, BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT GOING ON IN THE TOP 10%, 6 TO 10%.
I THINK IT'S A MORE OF AN INDIVIDUALIZED THING NOW WITH STUDENTS AND FAMILIES, THOUGH, I THINK THAT.
THERE WERE SHEETS THAT WENT AROUND. THIS GUARANTEES YOU A TOP 10%.
BUT MUCH LIKE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS, THEY FOUND OUT THAT DIDN'T GUARANTEE THE TOP 10% ANYMORE.
AND SO THERE WAS A SYSTEM THAT STARTED KIND OF FINDING ITS WAY OUT OF FAVOR.
BUT I THINK IT'S OUR KIDS ABILITY TO SEE THE SYSTEM THEY'RE UP AGAINST AND MAKING SOME BETTER DECISIONS AND I THINK IT'S UNIVERSITY, I SAY IT ALL THE TIME, AND I WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS.
WHEN THEY COME OUT WITH THEIRS, IT'S ALWAYS AN INTERESTING DAY BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN YOU FIND OUT, I SAY WHO YOUR REAL FRIENDS ARE, BECAUSE IF I GOT INTO UT, WHY DID YOU GET INTO UT AND WHY DIDN'T I GET INTO UT? AND THAT'S WHERE YOU SEE A LOT OF THE DIFFERENT ISSUES WHEN IT COMES ABOUT.
AND THAT'S THE BIGGEST UNIVERSITY WE SEE WHEN IT COMES TO THAT.
AND IT'S A LITTLE MORE IMPACTFUL BECAUSE THESE ARE SENIORS AND NOW IT'S COLLEGE ADMISSIONS.
SO BUT I THINK THE WE'VE REPLACED THE WORD COMPETITIVE OR COMPETITION WITH AMBITIOUS.
I THINK THAT, YOU KNOW THAT WE ALL LIVE IN AN AMBITIOUS COMMUNITY.
WE HAVE AMBITIOUS PARENTS, AND THAT'S WHY THEY'VE BEEN HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL.
AND IT'S OKAY TO BE AMBITIOUS.
THAT'S JUST THE REALITY OF IT.
AND IT WOULD NOT BE THE EMAILS.
IT WOULD NOT BE SOME OF THE PARENTS, IT WOULD NOT BE SOME OF THE EXPECTATIONS.
BUT YOU'RE HERE FOR A REASON BECAUSE YOU'RE ALSO AMBITIOUS.
THEY KNOW WHEN THEY CAN TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT KID AND WHY.
AND SO WE'RE ALL KIND OF IN THAT AMBITIOUS.
BUT WE'RE TRYING TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THAT, YOU KNOW, CUTTHROAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
BUT TO YOUR POINT, NO, IT'S NOT GOING TO PROBABLY EVER DISAPPEAR.
THAT'D BE VERY [INAUDIBLE] OF US TO THINK, OH, IT'S ALL GREAT NOW.
AND IT'S NOT BECAUSE YOU STILL HAVE IT EVERYWHERE.
AND THAT'S JUST KIND OF HOW THINGS KIND OF GO IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS.
IF THEY'RE LOOKING IN STATE, IT'S NOT NECESSARILY ABOUT BEING BETTER THAN THEIR NEIGHBOR.
BUT SOME OF THE PROGRAMS ARE FAIRLY COMPETITIVE.
I REMEMBER HEARING STORIES ABOUT KIDS GETTING INTO THE HIGHLY SELECTIVE COLLEGES, EVEN THOUGH.
I FIT IS A WORD THAT I LOVE, AND I THINK THAT'S SO IMPORTANT.
BUT THEY'RE NOT ALWAYS IN THE TOP 10%.
YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW HOW OFTEN THAT HAPPENS, BUT WHAT WE'RE NOT SEEING UP HERE IS THE WHOLE OTHER NON-ACADEMIC ASPECT OF ALL OF THE EXTRACURRICULARS THAT WE OFFER THAT GO INTO THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS GETTING INTO THESE SCHOOLS.
AND I KNOW THAT'S JUST A BIG PART OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL AND I WOULD LOVE AT SOME POINT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT OUR KIDS ARE DOING EXTRACURRICULARLY, AND HOW THEY'RE SPREAD ACROSS THE SCHOOL.
I THINK WE HAVE 130 CLUBS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
AND. YEAH, I THINK THAT PROBABLY SUMS UP ENOUGH OF.
[01:10:01]
THANK YOU. AND I'LL CONCLUDE IF I CAN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PHRASE THE QUESTION.AND PEOPLE WANT TO LIKE TO HAVE A PARADE.
WANTED TO SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL.
WE DIDN'T HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA THEN, BUT IT WAS LIKE, THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER TO HAPPEN.
WELL, THAT'S GREAT, BUT THAT WAS EIGHT STUDENTS.
YOU HAD 600 ISH BECAUSE WE WERE A SMALLER SCHOOL BACK THEN AND GOING, WELL, THAT'S GREAT FOR THEM.
I MEAN, IT WAS VERY INTERESTING.
AND JUST SEEING SOME KIDS WHO MAYBE DIDN'T GET INTO THERE BUT GOT INTO SOME RATHER OTHER, RATHER EXTREMELY HARD, DIFFICULT SCHOOLS TO GET IN HOW THEY WERE MISERABLE BECAUSE THAT WAS THE GOAL.
HE WAS ALWAYS GOING TO GET THERE.
FRONT, CENTER. THAT'S JUST HOW IT IS.
BUT HOW MANY OTHER KIDS COME IN THERE AND THEY PUT DOWN THEIRS AND THEY'RE LIKE, AND PEOPLE ARE LIKE, WHAT IS THAT? AND THEY TELL THEM WHY I'M GOING THERE.
AND THIS IS THE SCHOOL AND WHAT STATE IT'S IN.
AND YOU DON'T KNOW THAT YET. AND I SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH SENIORS TELLING THAT WHEN I START GOING TO CLASSES THIS SEMESTER, YOU DON'T KNOW YET THE EFFORT YOU PUT IN AND HOW AWESOME IT'S GOING TO BE. YOU'RE ONLY TAKING 12 OR 15 YOUR HOURS IN THE UNIVERSITY, AND YOU DON'T KNOW HOW PREPARED YOU ARE YET.
AND THEN THEY GET THERE AND THEY'RE LIKE, THIS IS AWESOME.
I GOT 156 HOURS OF THE REST OF THE WEEK.
THAT'S PRETTY GREAT AND I KNOW HOW TO DO THESE THINGS.
AND SO THERE'S ALL OF THAT WE REALLY TRY TO REINFORCE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
I THINK ONE OF THE BEST THINGS THAT'S HAPPENED ALONG THE WAY IS.
THIS MAN. I THINK IT WAS JUST ME AND MRS. BALTHAZAR ON THAT GROUP WITH THE GPA CHANGE.
I INHERITED THIS AFTER A BOARD MEETING.
I HAD A PARENT WHOSE STUDENTS HAVE GONE INTO ALL THREE OF THEM THAT I'VE HAD TO.
AND WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WHEN THEY FIRE ME AFTER THREE YEARS? AND SO FOR US, WE'VE BEEN HERE A WHILE.
IT'S VERY EXCITING TO SEE THAT THINGS KEEP PROGRESSING.
AND MISS BALTHAZAR'S ASKED ME A QUESTION WAY BACK WHEN IS IT BETTER TO BE BETTER? YOU GET ALL THESE KIDS SELECTIVE SCHOOLS OR TREAT KIDS RIGHT AND GET THEM TO WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS SAYING AT THE TIME, BUT I WENT, THAT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY CLEVER.
AND I THINK THAT WE HAVE KIDS THAT ARE PRETTY CONTENT TO COME TO SCHOOL.
THEY KNOW WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THEM IF THEY PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO IT.
AND IT'S OKAY TO SAY WE WORK HARD AGAIN.
AND THE LAST SIX SPEAKERS AT OUR GRADUATIONS HAVE ALL MENTIONED THE VALUE OF HARD WORK.
AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY, TOO, THERE'S A LOT OF HAPPINESS WHEN KIDS GET INTO SCHOOLS FROM OTHER KIDS.
THEY SEND SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS THROUGH EMAILS, WHICH IS CRAZY.
AND THEN A KID FINDS OUT AT LUNCH THAT THEY'VE GOTTEN IN SOMEWHERE.
YOU CAN'T FAKE YOUR GENUINE WARMTH AT THAT MOMENT.
I JUMP IN WITH ONE MORE THING.
I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT IN OUR BOARD PACKET YOU INCLUDED SOME DATA THAT I THOUGHT ANSWERS.
THAT PARENT WHO CHALLENGED YOU ABOUT HOW YOU WERE GOING TO DUMB DOWN WESTLAKE AND NOT GOING TO LAST MORE THAN THREE YEARS BECAUSE YOU HAVE STATISTICS ON THESE HIGHLY SELECTIVE COLLEGES AND THE NATIONAL PERCENTAGES AND WESTLAKE'S ADMIT PERCENTAGES AND THEY'RE ALL HIGHER KNOW WE ARE EXCEEDING THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
I MEAN, HOPEFULLY THOSE ARE ALL THE RIGHT FIT FOR THOSE STUDENTS, OF COURSE.
BUT I'VE HAD PARENTS COMING TO ME IN THE PAST SAYING IN THEIR MIND, WHAT THEY'RE SEEING IS THAT THERE AREN'T AS MANY STUDENTS FROM WESTLAKE GOING TO HIGHLY SELECTIVE COLLEGES, AND THAT THIS GPA CHANGE DID HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT.
BUT THIS CLEARLY REFUTES THAT, AND I'M HAPPY TO SEE THAT DATA.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, HEATHER.
AND THEN ELLEN. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
AND I REALLY APPRECIATED THE THINGS THAT YOU GUYS WERE DOING.
AND SO AND I HAD SUPER YOUNG KIDS AT THE TIME SO I APPRECIATED THAT MEETING AND IT WAS A LITTLE BIT LIKE BUT ANYWAYS, SO I REALLY WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO OUR COUNSELORS AND OUR COUNSELING DEPARTMENT AND OUR COLLEGE CENTER, BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE DOING A PHENOMENAL JOB AND I'VE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT.
[01:15:06]
YOU HAVE TO TALK TO COLLEGE REPS THIS WEEK.YOU KNOW, IT'S AN AMAZING THING THAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING AND I REALLY APPRECIATE IT.
AND THEN ALSO, MATT, I WANT TO GIVE KUDOS TO YOUR DEPARTMENT.
I LOVED THE MEET AND MINGLE AND THE PRESENTATION THAT YOU GUYS GAVE, AND THE FOCUS ON THE FACT THAT OUR KIDDOS ARE GOING TO DO GREAT THINGS AFTER THEY LEAVE US, NO MATTER IF THEY HAVE AN IEP OR IF THEY EXCEL AT AP.
DOESN'T MATTER OUR KIDS ARE GOING TO DO GREAT THINGS.
THAT IS AMAZING THAT WE ARE SUPPORTING STUDENTS WHO WANT TO TRY HARDER THINGS WITH MORE RIGOR, AND SUPPORTING THOSE STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL, WHETHER THEY TAKE THE AP EXAM OR NOT.
I REALLY APPRECIATE, SO I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU, MATT.
ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH ANY OF THAT? YEAH, I'D HAVE TO GET SOME MORE INFORMATION ON THAT BUT DEFINITELY WE'RE WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE TEXAS WORKFORCE COMMISSION BECAUSE THEY'VE EXPANDED THEIR OPPORTUNITIES JUST BEYOND WORK. AND NOW IT'S COLLEGE READINESS AND SUPPORTING THE COLLEGE ROUTE AS WELL.
AND SO WE HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE THAT SUPPORTS SORT OF OUR AREA AND THAT WE'VE PARTNERED WITH KATIE ROEBUCK IS OUR TRANSITION SPECIALIST IN THE DISTRICT. AND I THINK THEY MAY EVEN HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON NEXT WEEK RELATED TO THAT.
BUT YEAH, WE'RE TRYING TO GET THAT INFORMATION OUT TO FAMILIES AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
SO BUT I THINK WE'VE GOTTEN SOME STABILITY JUST RECENTLY WITH ONE OF THE REPS.
OKAY, GREAT. THAT'S GOOD NEWS.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO HELP OUR FAMILIES MAKE THAT EASIER, I THINK IS GREAT.
SO I THINK THAT'S AND I ALSO HEARD IT COULD EVEN BE FOR LIKE EXTRA SUPPORT OUTSIDE OF UNIVERSITY.
SO I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THAT.
OKAY. SO BACK TO MY OTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OTHER REPORT.
SO I NOTICED THAT WE SAID 373 SENIORS OUT OF 691 TOOK AP EXAMS. THAT'S A GREAT NUMBER. THAT'S A BIG NUMBER.
AND WE SAW THE AMAZING BENEFITS OF TAKING AN AP CLASS.
AND SO WE MENTIONED THAT 7% OF OUR STUDENTS GO TO A TWO YEAR SCHOOL.
AND I THINK WE ACTUALLY HAD NUMBER THREE.
AND NUMBER NINE IN OUR TOP TEN ARE EITHER COMMUNITY OR JUNIOR COLLEGES.
I KNOW A LOT OF OTHER DISTRICTS, SMALLER DISTRICTS THAN US MAYBE ARE EVEN OR NOT.
MAYBE THEY ARE OFFERING AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE WHILE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
IT DOES SEEM LIKE THAT'S THE SAME KIND OF TRACK AS AP, RIGHT? IF YOU'RE ABLE TO GET COLLEGE CREDIT AND THEN GO INTO COLLEGE AND HAVE TO SPEND LESS MONEY.
SO I'D BE INTERESTED IF YOU HAVE A THOUGHT ON THAT.
I SEE YOU MOVING THE MICROPHONE.
GO AHEAD. I HAVE SOME MORE AFTER THAT, BUT GO AHEAD.
AND JUST THE FACT THAT WE HAD 69 STUDENTS ALREADY TAKING DUAL CREDIT, AND I KNOW THAT'S A WEIRD KIND OF DYNAMIC IN OUR DISTRICT CURRENTLY BECAUSE NOT EVERYBODY, MYSELF INCLUDED, DOES NOT LIVE IN THE ACC TAXING ENTITY.
AREA AND SO IT'S A LITTLE BIT TRICKIER.
RIGHT NOW IF YOU WANT TO TAKE DUAL ENROLLMENT, IS THAT CORRECT? IF TO PAID, YOU HAVE TO PAY A DIFFERENT TUITION.
UM, SO ANYWAYS, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MAYBE A MORE ROBUST UPDATE ON DUAL ENROLLMENT AND HOW THAT KIND OF COMPARES AND HOW THOSE CLASSES IMPACT OUR STUDENTS.
AND FRANKLY, I MEAN, I ACTUALLY TOOK DUAL ENROLLMENT WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL A MILLION YEARS AGO.
[01:20:05]
AND I LOVED MY OPPORTUNITY.AND WHEN I WENT TO UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, I WAS VERY PREPARED.
SO I ALSO HAVE HEARD A LOT RECENTLY ABOUT THE ON RAMPS PROGRAM, AND I WILL BE VERY HONEST, I DON'T KNOW A TON ABOUT THAT, BUT I AM INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE BECAUSE THE WAY THAT IT'S BEEN POSED TO ME IS THAT IT IS SIMILAR TO AP, AND THAT THEY DO KIND OF LIKE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT UT IN THE SUMMER.
YOU KNOW, I'M ALWAYS OPEN AND WANTING TO GIVE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR STUDENTS.
AND SO JUST KIND OF PUTTING IT OUT THERE TO YOU GUYS BECAUSE YOU'RE THE EXPERTS.
OKAY. NOW WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO SAY? WELL, YOU ADDED SO MUCH TO IT, I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE SAID SO BEFORE.
SO WE ARE LOOKING AT A PROGRAM WITH REGION 13.
WE'VE BEEN VISITING WITH THEM.
THEY'RE IN A NEW PILOT ON A NEW WAY TO DO DUAL CREDIT.
AND SO THAT'S SOMETHING WE'RE LOOKING AT I THINK FROM TALKING TO MS. MAY AND DR. ARNETT, THAT'LL BE COMING TO YOU SHORTLY.
BUT THEY'RE KIND OF IN THEIR INFANCY.
AND I THINK THAT JUST SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE SINCE ZERO THREE, ZERO TWO THE WHOLE TIME, CHRIS, THAT THIS WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME WE ACTUALLY MENTIONED THE WORD DUAL CREDIT OUT LOUD.
AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE KEEP DOING, IS MENTIONING THINGS THAT WE USED TO SHY AWAY FROM.
SO I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WILL BE COMING DOWN THE PATH WHEN IT COMES TO.
THE DIFFERENT. THAT'S SOMETHING WE CAN LOOK AT.
BUT I THINK THAT ONE THING WE'VE DONE IS OUR KIDS.
IT TAKES A WHILE FOR CHANGE TO HAPPEN, AND THEY NEED TO SEE SOME SORT OF SUCCESS.
AND THAT'S ONE THING WE'RE VERY COGNIZANT OF, IS THAT WE HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT WILL SHOW KIDS THAT THIS IS AN AVENUE, THAT YOU'RE NOT GOING TO JUST TOTALLY DESTROY YOURSELF, WHATEVER THAT MEANS IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS.
SO I THINK THAT'S THE LINE THAT WE'RE TRYING TO WALK, BUT IT'S GOING TO BE COMING TO YOU THAT WE'RE DEFINITELY IN TALKS AND WE'RE GOING TO, I THINK, PILOT THE PILOT, THANK YOU AND SEE HOW THINGS GO. AND IT'S PRETTY EXCITING BECAUSE A LOT OF US SHARE THOSE SAME.
VISIONS OF WHAT SCHOOL COULD LOOK LIKE FOR SOME OF OUR STUDENTS.
I APPRECIATE THAT AND JUST I WILL USE MY OWN CHILD AS AN EXAMPLE HERE.
AND SO SHE WANTS TO GET HER COSMETOLOGY LICENSE FIRST.
AND SHE'LL PROBABLY KILL ME FOR MENTIONING HER IN A BOARD MEETING.
BUT YEAH, HERE WE ARE. WELL, SINCE I'M GETTING OLDER, I CAN SAY THINGS I'LL PUT A PLUG IN.
WHEN IT COMES TO LONG RANGE PLANNING.
LIKE KIDS HAVE TO SEE IT, THEY HAVE TO FEEL IT.
I TO CINCO RANCH HIGH SCHOOL GOT HER A COSMETOLOGY CERTIFICATE.
AND SO THERE'S AVENUES TO DO THAT.
BUT I DO THINK THAT IF YOU LOOK AT THE WAY DR.
ARNETT USING THE WORD COBBLED TOGETHER, COBBLED, AND I THINK THAT'S A GOOD WAY TO DESCRIBE THE HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN COBBLED TOGETHER THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE SOME, I THINK, SIGNIFICANT THINGS TO HELP MOVE TOWARDS, WHETHER IT'S COSMETOLOGY, THINGS LIKE AUTO MECHANIC, VET TECH, DIFFERENT THINGS THAT OTHER SCHOOLS AROUND US HAVE RIGHT NOW THAT GIVE KIDS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO IN THE WORKFORCE, OR A REAL VIABLE WORKING OPTION AS THEY GO TO UNIVERSITIES THAT JUST, YOU KNOW, MORE OR LESS NOT YOUR TYPICAL COLLEGE JOB.
AND I THINK OUR KIDS WOULD THRIVE IN THAT.
SO BACK TO THE LONG RANGE PLANNING STUFF.
ALL THIS STUFF IS SO EXCITING, AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.
WE'RE THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX ON THIS AND I THINK IT'S GREAT FOR OUR KIDS.
SO THANK YOU. AS MR. RAMSEY SAID, WE ARE TENTATIVELY PLANNING A PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD IN DECEMBER BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN EXPLORING SOME ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS, PROGRAMS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH REGION 13, SO WE HOPE TO BRING THAT TO THE BOARD IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS.
THANK YOU, DR. ARNETT. WE'LL GO TO ELLEN AND THEN LAURA.
SO I JUST WANTED TO SAY PUBLICLY HOW EXCITED I AM BY TONIGHT'S DISCUSSION ON SO MANY FRONTS.
THE MAIN TAKEAWAYS GETTING BACK TO THE 50 OVER 50 IN TERMS OF AP ENGLISH.
IS SO HUGE VERSUS WHERE WE WERE.
FOUR YEARS AGO. FIVE YEARS AGO.
AND THE 166 COLLEGES THAT STUDENTS HAVE FOUND ARE THE RIGHT ONES FOR THEM.
AND THE FIT AND THE MATCH THAT'S THERE THAT.
CONGRATULATIONS. A CULTURE CHANGE IS SO HARD, BUT THE FACT THAT YOU AND YOUR STAFF DID CHALLENGE SUCCESS, TO BORROW A PHRASE, CHALLENGE SUCCESS AND CHANGE THE CULTURE FROM COMPETITIVE TO AMBITIOUS, I THINK IS PRETTY
[01:25:10]
REMARKABLE. AND IN THAT, PRESERVE THE EXCELLENCE THAT THIS COMMUNITY IS KNOWN FOR, YOU KNOW, DIDN'T THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATH WATER WITH THE GPA CHANGE OR THE MISSION STATEMENT.WE STILL HAVE EXCELLENCE IN EANES AND WE HAVE KIDS THAT ARE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER, AND HOPEFULLY WE'LL BE VERY, VERY PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS.
SO AND, AND IT'S CHANGED IN WAYS THAT ARE HIGHLIGHTING THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE IN A VERY GOOD PLACE THAT THEY ARE STILL ACHIEVING.
THEY ARE STILL VERY HIGH ACHIEVING.
AND AT THE SAME TIME, THEY'RE REALLY LEARNING ABOUT WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO THEM.
I LOVE THAT THAT THE STUDENTS, WE HAVE HIGHLY SELECTIVE STUDENTS.
THAT'S IMPORTANT. I MEAN, IT'S THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING FOR IS WE ARE TRYING TO HELP.
WE'RE TRYING TO ENABLE THESE KIDDOS TO.
BE THE BEST VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES THAT THEY CAN BE.
AND WHEN YOU SEE THEM, 50%, ALMOST 50% OF OUR STUDENTS LEAVE THE STATE FOR COLLEGE.
SO I LOVE SEEING THAT THEY CAN BE LIKE YOU SAID.
THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL AND HIGH ACHIEVING AND TRUE TO THEMSELVES.
AP LOOKS DIFFERENT WHEN YOU'RE AN OUT OF STATE STUDENT.
SO THE KIDDOS THAT ARE GOING TO THE OUT OF STATE, USUALLY PRIVATE COLLEGES, BUT EVEN THE OUT OF STATE SCHOOLS, HOW THEY'RE I THINK THEIR AP SCORES ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY.
SO I THINK THE DUAL CREDIT IS IT'S TIMELY TO BE LOOKING AT THAT.
AND THEN I HAVE INSIGHT ON THE MCGILL.
IT HAS COST. THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS ARE WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE PRICE OF OUT-OF-STATE TUITION.
THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS ARE ACTUALLY LESS SO.
WAS BECAUSE I HAVE ONE INTERNATIONAL IN EUROPE AND I'M NOT SURE THAT'S ACTUALLY TRUE.
I FEEL LIKE WE SUBSIDIZE THEIR STUDENTS AND THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE IT'S STILL LESS.
IT'S STILL LESS THAN THE A LOT OF THE SCHOOLS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE GOING TO SO THAT'S INSIGHT ON MCGILL. AND I THINK IT'S FASCINATING THAT WE HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF STUDENTS GOING TO [INAUDIBLE] AND RICE.
I THINK THAT SHOWS REAL BALANCE IN OUR STUDENTS.
GOOD STUFF. YOU WILL GO TO DIANE AND THEN KIM.
I JUST WANTED TO TACK ON TO THE CONCEPT OF CHALLENGE, SUCCESS AND ALL THE WORK THAT YOU'VE DONE WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE SCHOOL TO HELP SHIFT THE CULTURE. BUT A LOT OF THE CHALLENGE HAS BEEN TO GET THAT SHIFT IN THE MINDSET OF THE PARENTS THAT ARE OUT THERE, AND THEIR PART OF THE SOURCE OF STRESS FOR THE STUDENTS, OF COURSE, BECAUSE THEY WANT TO SEE THEIR STUDENTS SUCCEED.
AND THEY'RE, YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE A LOT OF TIMES THEY HAVE THEIR OWN VISION OF SUCCESS.
AND I JUST WANTED TO MAKE A LITTLE PLUG BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THE PTO IS ALREADY PUTTING IT OUT THERE IN SOME FLIERS THAT DENISE POPE FROM CHALLENGE SUCCESS WILL BE BACK IN OUR COMMUNITY. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DATE IS, BUT SHE'S GOING TO BE DOING A PROGRAM FOR PARENTS AND EVEN PUSHING IT DOWN INTO THAT MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL, TRYING TO GET IT OUT THERE BECAUSE OUR PARENTS ARE THINKING ABOUT IT AT A QUITE YOUNG LEVEL, YOU KNOW, WHEN THEIR STUDENTS ARE QUITE YOUNG.
SO I JUST WANTED TO THROW THAT OUT THERE AS PART OF THAT [INAUDIBLE].
KIM? FIRST, I'LL START BY APOLOGIES THAT I MISSED THE PRESENTATION.
I THOUGHT I WOULD GET BACK HERE, BACK IN THE ROOM A LITTLE EARLIER.
I JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT THE THING THAT JUMPED OUT AT ME, AND THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS THAT JUMPED OUT IN THE PRESENTATION AS I READ IT, AND AS I PREPARED FOR THIS, WAS THAT OF THE 166 COLLEGES IN THE COLLEGE PORTION OF THE PRESENTATION, YOU KNOW, OVER HALF OF THEM WERE SINGLE STUDENTS THAT WERE ATTENDING ON THEIR
[01:30:07]
OWN. AND I THINK THAT ALSO SHOWS, IN ADDITION TO EVERYTHING THAT WE SEE IN OUR STUDENTS, THERE'S SOME BRAVERY IN GOING AWAY TO A SCHOOL BY YOURSELF WITHOUT ANY OF YOUR YOUR COLLEAGUES OR YOUR FRIENDS.THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION OR THE AND IF I HAVE QUESTIONS, I'LL REACH OUT TO YOU.
ALL RIGHT. I THINK WE'RE DONE.
APPRECIATE IT. WE WILL MOVE TO THE PBA REPORT ON FACILITIES RENTAL PROGRAM.
[10.3 PB and H Report on the Facilities Rental Program]
JOHN MANNING.WELCOME. THAT WOULD HELP I THINK I'M NEXT AFTER THIS, CORRECT? WITH THE AUDIT.
OKAY, SO YOU GET ME FOR TWO AGENDA ITEMS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE FIRST THING I'D LIKE TO GO OVER THAT WE HAVE ON THE ORDER OF THE AGENDA IS THE FACILITIES USE, WHICH IS THE AGREED UPON PROCEDURES.
BUT THE BOARD AND MANAGEMENT CHARGED US WITH GOING IN AND LOOKING AT THE FACILITIES MANAGEMENT GROUP AND JUST KIND OF LOOKING AT AN OVERALL PICTURE OF WHAT THEY DO AND HOW THOSE OPERATIONS ARE BEING RUN.
WE ALSO TOOK SOME OUT OF THE GENERAL LEDGER AND WORKED BACK TO THE RENTAL AGREEMENT.
SO WE GO BOTH WAYS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS BEING ACCOUNTED FOR PROPERLY.
WE ALSO HAD SOME INSTANCES WHERE THERE WAS A VENDOR THAT PEOPLE HAD EXPRESSED SOME CONCERN ABOUT.
SO WE LOOKED AT THOSE IN PARTICULAR IN EXTRA DETAIL, LOOKED AT ATTENDANCE RECORDS, AND ALL OF THOSE APPEARED TO BE IN LINE WITH WHAT THE DISTRICT POLICY WAS.
I KNOW, I BELIEVE, CHRIS, YOU GUYS ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REVAMPING THE FACILITIES AGREEMENT NOW.
SO IT'S OBVIOUSLY THIS IS OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD.
WE CAN'T LOOK AT EVERY TRANSACTION, BUT WITH THIS REPORT YOU'VE GOT TO REMEMBER THIS IS ABOUT $1 MILLION A YEAR THAT GOES INTO THIS PROGRAM, WHICH IS A LOT.
AND THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS HAVE CONTROLS IN THE DEPARTMENT THAT'S TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY IS HUGE.
BUT REMEMBER WE'VE GOT OVER $250 MILLION OF REVENUE TOO.
A SMALL PIECE OF WHAT THE DISTRICT DOES.
BUT THIS REPORT SHOULD GIVE YOU SOME ASSURANCE THAT WHAT WE LOOKED AT AGAIN, WE LOOKED AT FIVE YEARS RANDOM DATA AND WE DID NOT SEE ANYTHING THAT THAT'S EVERY SINGLE ONE HAD AN AGREEMENT, EVERY SINGLE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED.
AND EVERY SINGLE RATE THAT WE TESTED WAS IN LINE WITH WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPORTED.
SO IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT, I COULD SHOW YOU THE WORK.
THIS SUMMARIZES WHAT THAT WORK WENT INTO, AND WE FEEL VERY GOOD ABOUT THE REPORT.
THANK YOU FOR THIS AND I APPRECIATE THE WORK THAT WENT INTO THE AUDIT.
CAN YOU JUST EXPLAIN TO US HOW YOU DEFINE THE SAMPLE SET? SO WHAT WE DID WAS WE LOOKED AT FIVE YEARS AND SO WE LOOKED AT EACH YEAR'S REVENUE.
YES. AND OBVIOUSLY SOMETIMES THE POLICIES AND THINGS HAD CHANGED.
SO WE HAD TO KIND OF MEASURE THEM.
[01:35:01]
TRUSTEE. AND JUST TO KIND OF MAYBE GO FURTHER ON THAT.AND I TRUST THE ANSWER ON THIS ONE.
NO. WE RANDOMLY SELECTED THEM.
YEAH. WE CAME OUT ON SITE AND INTO THE FILING CABINETS AND GOT RENTAL AGREEMENTS.
SO YES, NOW THE ONES WHERE WE HAD SOME CONCERN ABOUT A PARTICULAR VENDOR, THOSE WE LOOKED AT ON PURPOSE AND BUT AGAIN, THEY DIDN'T SAY HERE, LOOK AT THESE FROM THIS VENDOR.
HE GAVE US ALL THOSE AND WE PICKED RANDOMLY FROM THOSE.
THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT, RIGHT? CHRIS, THE SUMMARY OF THIS REPORT WILL BE AVAILABLE UNDER THE REPORTS SECTION ON OUR WEBSITE.
IS THAT CORRECT? UNDER THE BUSINESS DEPARTMENT, IT WILL BE POSTED BY TOMORROW.
THANK YOU FOR STAYING, MR. MANNING. SO IN THE PROCESS OF THIS, ARE YOU GOING TO.
WE'RE GOING TO ASK FOR A MOTION ON THE FINANCIAL REPORT AND THEN DISCUSS IT.
WE'RE IN THE MOTIONS SECTION OF THE MEETING.
HEATHER? I MOVE THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ACCEPT THE ANNUAL INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL AUDIT REPORT FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30TH, 2023.
MOTION BY HEATHER. SECOND BY ELLEN.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? ANY QUESTIONS? COME.
OKAY. AND MAYBE THERE HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST, BUT NOT IN THIS YEAR.
NO, THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR THAT WE'VE DONE THE REPORT.
THANK YOU. SO CAN I GO OVER THIS A LITTLE BIT? YES, I HAVE A SLIDE PUT TOGETHER, BUT I THINK IT'S BETTER SINCE YOU GUYS HAVE THE REPORT IN FRONT OF YOU THAT I JUST HIT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS.
IT'S EASIER TO KIND OF SHOW YOU LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
YEAH. I'M JUST GOING TO LOOK AT THIS IF WE CAN IT'S ADVANCES AND THAT GOES BACK.
SO THIS KIND OF WAS PUT TOGETHER.
WE HAVE KIND OF A BASE PRESENTATION THAT WE DO.
AND WE HAVE TO DO ONES WITH POWERPOINT.
AND BASICALLY WHAT KIND OF GOES OVER SOME OF THE AUDIT PROCESS THAT WE DO JUST TO GIVE THE BOARD AS WE ARE HIRED BY Y'ALL, WE WORK WITH THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT, BUT WE'RE HIRED AND REPORT TO THE BOARD. SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE DELINEATE THAT.
WE DO THE AUDIT IN TWO PROCESSES.
ONE IS PLANNING, WHICH IS WHERE WE GO OUT BEFORE YEAR END, WHERE WE LOOK AT THINGS LIKE INTERNAL CONTROLS, PROCESSES, WHERE WE GET AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THE DISTRICT DOES SO THAT WHEN WE GET THE ENDING NUMBERS, WE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT THOSE NUMBERS NEED TO BE AND WHAT THE PROCESSES ARE THAT YOU GUYS HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE NUMBERS HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF BEING REPORTED PROPERLY.
INTERIM WORK WE DID IN JULY OF 2023.
LIKE I SAID, WE LOOKED AT INTERNAL CONTROLS, WE DID OUR RISK ASSESSMENT, AND WE DID SOME PRELIMINARY TESTING ON THINGS THAT WE COULD BEFORE YEAR END FIELD WORK WE DID IN AUGUST.
AGAIN, THIS WAS A KIND OF A SUMMARY OF THE STAFF THAT WAS DONE THAT WAS OUT THERE DOING THE WORK.
AND WE DID OUR SINGLE AUDIT TESTING, WHICH I'LL GO TO INTO A LITTLE BIT MORE IN A MINUTE.
THIS KIND OF GOES ALONG WITH PAGE TWO IT'S THE INDEPENDENT AUDITORS REPORT.
AND WE WERE ABLE TO OFFER WHAT WE CALL AN UNMODIFIED OPINION.
WHICH OF THE FOUR TYPES OF OPINIONS THAT WE CAN OFFER.
IT IS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ASSURANCE THAT WE CAN GIVE.
WHAT WE WOULD DO WOULD SAY EVERYTHING IS OKAY EXCEPT FOR THIS.
AND THAT'S CALLED A MODIFICATION.
Y'ALL DIDN'T HAVE THAT. SO VERY GOOD.
[01:40:07]
LIKE ALL THE MONEY THAT YOU GUYS HAVE IN THE BANK.IS IT COLLATERALIZED? ARE YOU FOLLOWING PFI? SO ALL THE THINGS, BECAUSE OF THE REGULATIONS THAT COME WITH THE TYPE OF MONEY YOU GET, WHO IT COMES FROM, HOW IT'S GENERATED.
WE HAVE TO DO EXTRA TESTS THAT I DON'T HAVE TO DO IF I'M DOING A CORPORATE ENTITY.
SO WITH THAT, WE DID NOT HAVE ANY INTERNAL CONTROL OR COMPLIANCE ISSUES TO REPORT TO THE BOARD WHEN WE WERE LOOKING THROUGH FOR OUR GOVERNMENT AUDITING STANDARDS.
I THINK THE LAST I'VE ESSER WILL BE IN THIS REPORT.
THIS YEAR KIND OF GETS YOU ROTATING AND ESSER.
YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE THAT LOW RISK.
YOU IF IT'S OVER 750, YOU HAVE TO TEST IT.
BUT AND YOU GUYS DID A VERY GOOD JOB WITH THAT.
SO WE DID MORE THAN WHAT WAS NEEDED.
THIS IS JUST SOME STUFF ON INTERNAL CONTROLS.
SO WE DIDN'T JUST GET THE TRIAL BALANCE.
LOOK AT THE MONEY FROM TEA AND KIND OF STOP.
THINGS LIKE THE FACILITY RENTALS.
WE DON'T GO THROUGH IT AT THIS LEVEL THAT WE DID FOR THE EXTRA ENGAGEMENT, BUT WE DO LOOK AT NUMBERS ANALYTICALLY, WHERE IF WE SEE LARGE CHANGES, WE GO TO MANAGEMENT AND GET VERIFICATION THAT THOSE CHANGES ARE APPROPRIATE AND THAT THEY'RE CORRECT.
IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLY WITH LAWS AND REGULATIONS.
AND IT'S ALSO WE TEST CONTROLS AND LOOK AT THEM.
LET ME JUST GET TO THE FINANCIAL REPORT.
IT'S OKAY. I CAN GO THROUGH HERE AND LOOK AT IT.
IF YOU WOULD LOOK AT PAGE 14 AND 15.
SO IF YOU LOOK AT THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL YOUR GOVERNMENTAL FUND BALANCE SHEET.
SO THIS IS AS WE TALKED ABOUT FUND BALANCE EARLIER AS A SNAPSHOT.
THIS IS WHAT YOUR ASSETS AND LIABILITIES LOOK AT EXACTLY ON ONE DAY OF JUNE 30TH 2023.
SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE, YOU SEE SOME VERY LARGE NUMBERS.
YOU KNOW, YOU LOOK AT TOTAL ASSETS.
THAT'S 95% OF THE ENTIRE BALANCE SHEET IS IN CASH.
SO WHAT WE DO IS WE GET CONFIRMATIONS AND WE GO OUT AND WE DON'T JUST HAVE THE DISTRICT SAY, WE HAVE THIS MUCH AT THE BANK AND LOOK AT A STATEMENT, BECAUSE NOW WE KNOW STATEMENTS CAN BE FAKED AND BUT WE CAN'T JUST RELY ON SOMEONE SAYING, HERE'S YOUR BANK STATEMENT.
WE PREPARE CONFIRMATIONS, WE MAIL THEM SO WE MAKE SURE WE KNOW WHAT WENT OUT, WHAT CAME BACK.
SO WE KNOW EXACTLY THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT WAS IN THERE.
THIS ISN'T THE FIRST YEAR PEOPLE DO PREDOMINANTLY A LOT OF THE CASH WORK.
AGAIN, WE GET THAT FROM THE COUNTY.
THEY SHOW HOW MUCH IS REMAINING UNCOLLECTED.
WE TEST THE REVENUE AGAIN, NOT A LOT OF RISK ON ITS BALANCE SHEET.
THE OTHER LARGE NUMBER HERE IS ABOUT $120 MILLION, WHICH IS WHAT YOU GUYS MENTIONED EARLIER ABOUT YOUR RECAPTURE PAYMENT WHICH I KNOW IS A THORN IN EVERYONE'S SIDE I DO THINK.
[01:45:01]
REASON THAT THEY DON'T CHANGE THAT AFAR, OR THAT FIRST RATING INDICATOR IS BECAUSE THERE'S NOT THAT MANY DISTRICTS THAT HAVE THIS.ARE WE LOOKING GOING? THEY'RE STILL GETTING A SUPERIOR RATING IN THEIR MIND.
WHO CARES? BUT I DO APPRECIATE THAT YOU GUYS ARE CONCERNED WITH THAT.
AGAIN, THAT'S YOUR LARGEST LIABILITY THERE ON THAT BALANCE SHEET.
SO WHEN YOU REALLY LOOK AT THIS, THE NUMBERS ARE BIG.
THERE'S JUST NOT A LOT OF RISK THERE.
AGAIN, THIS IS YOUR INCOME STATEMENT.
SO THIS NOW IS A SUMMARY OF 12 MONTHS OF ALL YOUR REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES.
AGAIN, YOU CAN SEE PREDOMINANTLY THE BIG DRIVER OF REVENUES ARE LOCAL REVENUES WHICH ARE PROPERTY TAXES, A LITTLE OVER $10 MILLION OF STATE FUNDS AND A LITTLE UNDER $6 MILLION OF FEDERAL.
AND IF YOU LOOK OVER IN THAT COLUMN TEN FOR THE GENERAL FUND, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE GENERAL FUND ADDED ABOUT $3.5 MILLION TO FUND BALANCE THIS YEAR, BRINGING IT TO $30 MILLION, A LITTLE BIT OVER THAT, WHICH IS GREAT.
UM, I HAVE A SLIDE HERE THAT SHOWS HOW MUCH.
ON BALANCE, YOU HAVE AS A PERCENTAGE OF EXPENDITURES.
I ALWAYS FORGET TO DISCOUNT THAT AND TAKE OUT THE RECAPTURE PAYMENTS.
SO THE NUMBER THAT I HAVE IN THERE DOESN'T REFLECT THAT.
SO YOUR FUND BALANCE IS A PERCENTAGE OF EXPENDITURES WHEN YOU REMOVE THAT IS EXTREMELY HEALTHY.
SO DISTRICT IS IN VERY GOOD FINANCIAL WORKING ORDER THERE.
SAME THING WITH THE DEBT SERVICE.
ONE THING THAT I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT I WOULD LIKE TO APPLAUD THE DISTRICT ON, IS IF YOU LOOK IN THAT 50 COLUMN FOR DEBT SERVICE, IF YOU SCROLL DOWN, YOU CAN SEE THAT FUND BALANCE WENT FROM ABOUT 24 MILLION DOWN TO A LITTLE UNDER 20.
THAT'S BECAUSE YOU GUYS DID THAT EARLY DEFEASANCE OF THE BOND.
SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE I KNEW THAT'S A DEAL THAT Y'ALL GUYS DID.
WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT I SHOWED WHERE THAT GOT REFLECTED INTO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
SO THAT SAVED A LOT OF INTEREST COMING UP IN THE FUTURE.
SO I APPLAUD YOU GUYS TAKING THE TIME TO LOOK AT THOSE THINGS WHEN THEY'RE OUT THERE AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ULTIMATELY LOWERING HOW MUCH YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY IN INTEREST.
THESE OTHER GOVERNMENTAL COLUMNS ARE PREDOMINANTLY YOUR CAPITAL PROJECTS, WHICH ARE SOME BOND PROCEEDS THAT ARE STILL LEFT AND SOME CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE, AND THEN ALL OF YOUR GRANT FUNDS.
AND AGAIN, NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY.
THEY'RE A LITTLE OVER $17 MILLION OF FUND BALANCE WITH THOSE.
I DID WANT TO POINT OUT ONE THING I DON'T THINK WE TOUCHED ON THIS LAST YEAR.
IF YOU LOOK AT PAGE 50 AND 51.
THIS IS THE NINTH YEAR THAT WE'VE HAD TO PRESENT THIS.
SO ONE OF THE THINGS WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT, WELL, HOW DO WE DO THIS YEAR VERSUS LAST YEAR? THIS AGAIN IS SOMETHING THAT'S COMPLETELY OUT OF THE CONTROL OF THE DISTRICT.
LAST YEAR, THEY MEASURED THE NET PENSION OBLIGATION AT A LITTLE UNDER 10 MILLION.
SO. BUT YOU CAN GO THROUGH THERE AND LOOK AND LOOK WHAT IT DOES FOR 13, 15, 24.
IT JUST GOES LIKE THIS. AND THAT'S BECAUSE IT JUST MIRRORS THE STOCK MARKET.
IF YOU LOOK IN THE YEARS WHERE YOU THAT LIABILITY WENT WAY DOWN.
WE'LL LOOK AT THE ASSETS IN TEARS WENT WAY UP.
SO WE HAVE TO CAPTURE THIS AND WE HAVE TO.
MEASURE ALL OF THAT CHANGE IN ONE YEAR.
SO IT'S CONSTANTLY GOING LIKE THIS.
SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE YOU AWARE THAT THAT NUMBER IS BIG.
YOU KNOW, YOU HEAR HORROR STORIES ABOUT PENSION.
THAT'S NOT WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE.
SO I DIDN'T KNOW HOW MUCH IN DETAIL THAT YOU ALL LOOK AT THIS.
[01:50:02]
THAT IT'S REALLY DEPENDENT UPON THE STOCK MARKET AND HOW THAT WORKS.SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT I POINTED THAT OUT, BECAUSE A LOT OF OUR OTHER GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES, PEOPLE ARE CONSTANTLY COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PENSION PLANS AND THE BENEFITS THAT ARE OFFERED TO THOSE EMPLOYEES.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE BACK AGAIN.
NINE AND 90 IS THE SUMMARY OF YOUR FEDERAL FUNDS.
AND AGAIN. ALL WE HAD TO TEST THIS YEAR WAS ESSER.
YOU KNOW, THE DOCUMENTATION THAT WE GOT FROM THE GRANTS DEPARTMENT WAS REALLY GOOD.
YOU CAN'T LOOK AT EVERY DOLLAR.
WE CONFIRMED HOW MUCH YOU GOT FROM TEA, 100% INDEPENDENT FROM THEM.
WHEN WE TESTED YOUR EXPENDITURE REPORTS, WHERE YOU WERE SUBMITTING REQUESTS TO TIA FOR GETTING REIMBURSED FOR EXPENDITURES THAT WERE ELIGIBLE AND ALL OF THEM WERE VERY EASY TO READ, THEY WERE ALL HAD ALL THE CONTENT THAT NEEDED TO BE THERE.
WHAT WE'RE FINDING IS OUR PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE FINDINGS, OUR CLIENTS THAT DON'T HAVE FINDINGS, OUR CLIENTS THAT TAKE THESE THINGS SERIOUSLY, HAVE A PROCESS, FOLLOW IT, AND THEY HAVE A GOOD MANAGEMENT TEAM AROUND THEM.
SO THIS YOU CAN ASK THEM AND ASK MARIA.
IT'S EVERY DAY, HEY, CAN YOU SEND US THIS? CAN YOU SEND US THIS? CAN WE LOOK AT THIS? SO THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE NO FINDINGS IS NOT FROM LACK OF EFFORT.
IT'S FROM ABUNDANCE OF ABILITY, IF YOU WILL.
SO I THINK I HIT A LOT OF THE HIGH POINTS AND I REALIZED THIS IS A 90 PAGE DOCUMENT.
IT SUMS UP A WHOLE YEAR OF FINANCES.
I ENJOY DOING THIS, SO IF YOU GUYS HAVE QUESTIONS, I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER THOSE.
YEAH. AND EVERYONE'S LIKE, OH, I COULDN'T BE AN ACCOUNTANT.
AND I ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE.
THAT'S ALL I DO KNOW AP CALCULUS, NO TRIG, JUST ADDING AND SUBTRACTING.
ALL RIGHT. ANY QUESTIONS? TRUSTEES. WILL WE TRUST YOUR REPORT? GOOD DEAL. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
WE HAVE A MOTION AND A SECOND.
AYE. THE MOTION PASSES SIX ZERO.
AND COULD I JUST ADD ONE MORE STATEMENT? I'M SO SORRY. I NEED TO THANK MANAGEMENT IN PARTICULAR.
CHRIS AND MARIA AND THEIR TEAM.
THESE ARE HARD TO DO. LAST YEAR WE PRESENTED THIS IN NOVEMBER.
PARTIALLY BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST YEAR WE WORKED WITH YOU ALL, SO THE FIRST YEAR IS ALWAYS TOUGH.
WE WERE ABLE TO GET THIS TO YOU ALL A MONTH EARLIER.
A LOT OF THAT HAD TO DO WITH THEM AND EVERYBODY THAT WE DEALT WITH.
THE FACILITIES MANAGEMENT PEOPLE WERE EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND ACCOMMODATING.
SO WE APPRECIATE EVERYBODY THAT WE DEALT WITH AT THE DISTRICT.
AND THANK YOU FOR LETTING US PRESENT.
THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR. THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
[11.2 Request to Accept the Hill Country Middle School Booster Club Donation]
DO I HAVE A MOTION? ELLEN? I MOVE THAT WE ACCEPT THE DONATION OF $26,791.10 FROM THE HILL COUNTRY MIDDLE SCHOOL BOOSTER CLUB.THANK YOU ELLEN. MOTION BY ELLEN.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE, MOTION PASSES SIX ZERO.
REQUEST TO APPROVE CHARTER FOR LONG RANGE PLANNING FOR LONG RANGE FACILITY PLANNING COMMITTEE.
[11.3 Request to Approve Charter for Long Range Facility Planning Committee]
DO I HAVE A MOTION? I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVE THE CHARTER FOR THE LONG RANGE FACILITY PLANNING COMMITTEE AS PRESENTED.ALL RIGHT. ANY DISCUSSION? HEATHER. I'M JUST SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THIS ENDEAVOR THAT WE'RE ABOUT TO UNDERTAKE.

[11.4 Request to Approve Charter for 2023 Bond Oversight Committee (BOC)]
DO I HAVE A MOTION? ELLEN. I RECOMMEND THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVE THE 2023 BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE CHARTER AS PRESENTED.[01:55:05]
MOTION BY ELLEN, SECOND BY KIM.DO I HAVE A MOTION? I NEED TO PULL TWO THINGS.
[12. ACTION - CONSENT AGENDA]
I NEED TO PULL APPROVAL OF PURCHASE OF IPAD CHARGERS AND THE APPROVAL OF THE PURCHASE OF IPADS, PLEASE.THERE'S ONE IPAD ITEM ON ITEMS 12.6 AND 12.7.
AND THEN ON THIS LIST, I HAVE A MOTION FROM HEATHER.
ANY DISCUSSION. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE.
AND I MAKE A COMMENT YES, ABOUT I WANT TO INFLUENCE THE OUTCOME BUT THE CONSENT AGENDA IS THE STADIUM VIDEO PRODUCTION BOARD REPLACEMENT.
THAT VIDEO PRODUCTION BOARD HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST TRANSFORMATIONAL CURRICULUM PURCHASES I'VE SEEN THIS DISTRICT DO IN ALL MY YEARS HERE, AND THE TECHNICAL ENTERTAINMENT CREW THAT EVOLVED FROM THE PURCHASE OF THE FIRST BOARD.
WE'VE CERTAINLY TAKEN A LOT OF SLINGS AND ARROWS OVER THE YEARS, BUT I THINK THAT'S BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN MISUNDERSTOOD AS BEING AN ATHLETIC PURCHASE WHEN IT, IN FACT HAS BEEN A TREMENDOUS CURRICULUM PURCHASE.
AND I JUST DIDN'T WANT THIS TO GO UNSAID THIS TIME AROUND.
THAT'S A GREAT POINT. THANK YOU.
I NEED A MOTION ON THE REMAINING TWO ITEMS.
[Items 12.6 & 12.7]
LAURA. I MOVE THAT THE BOARD APPROVE ITEMS 12.6 AND 12.7 ON THE CONSENT AGENDA. MOTION BY LAURA.ANY DISCUSSION? I DO. SO I PULLED THESE ITEMS BECAUSE AS AN EMPLOYEE OF APPLE, I DON'T WANT TO BE PART OF A VOTE FOR THAT, SO I WILL ABSTAIN FROM VOTING.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. THE MOTION PASSES FIVE ZERO, WITH ONE ABSTENTION.
OKAY PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF UPCOMING BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETINGS.
[13. UPCOMING MEETINGS]
2023. THANK YOU ALL FOR ATTENDING TONIGHT.SAFE TRAVELS. WE ARE ADJOURNED.
