GOOD EVENING. I AM JAMES SPRADLEY, PRESIDENT OF THE EANES ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES.ON BEHALF OF THE TRUSTEES AND THE ADMINISTRATION, WELCOME TO TONIGHT'S MEETING.
THE PURPOSE OF TONIGHT'S MEETING IS FOR THE BOARD TO DELIBERATE AND VOTE ON MATTERS ON THE AGENDA.
WE WILL HAVE OUR BOARD MEETING HERE.
WE WILL DISCUSS TOPICS ON OUR AGENDA AND THEN TAKE A VOTE.
WELL, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENT LATER IN THE MEETING.
HOWEVER, NO ONE SIGNED UP FOR TONIGHT, SO WE WILL HAVE NO OPEN FORUM.
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US AND FOR YOUR INTEREST IN OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR SCHOOLS.
[6.1 Discuss and take potential action on student grievance based on arguments for the Board to consider]
MR. SPRADLEY, I THINK YOU HAVE AN ACTION ITEM THAT PRECEDES THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.OKAY. DO I HAVE A MOTION ON THE ACTION ITEM? KIM. I MOVE THAT THE TRUSTEES UPHOLD THE LEVEL ONE AND LEVEL TWO REMEDIES WITH ONE EXCEPTION, WHICH IS THAT IN THE LEVEL ONE REMEDY THAT THE HANDBOOK WILL BE REVIEWED, ETC..
THAT THERE WOULD BE AN ADDED REMEDY THAT PARTICIPANTS IN ALL ELECTIONS, INCLUDING OFFICER ELECTIONS, WILL BE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE IN WRITING PRIOR TO ELECTION.
LET ME START OVER AGAIN. PARTICIPANTS IN ALL ELECTIONS, INCLUDING OFFICER ELECTIONS, WILL BE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE IN WRITING OF THE ELECTION PROCEDURES.
MOTION BY KIM. DO I HAVE A SECOND? SECOND. BY DIANE.
ANY DISCUSSION? OKAY. MOTION MADE.
WE DON'T HAVE AN ATTORNEY IN THE ROOM.
THAT WAS A REVISIT OF THE LEVEL ONE.
I THINK THAT WE COULD ADDRESS THE NOTES THAT WERE OR THE DECISIONS THAT WERE LAID OUT IN LEVEL TWO.
DO YOU NOT AGREE? AND MAYBE I'M SPEAKING IT WRONG.
WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO WAS VALIDATE LEVEL TWO, WHICH I SAW AS AGREEING WITH LEVEL ONE. MAY WANT TO JUST WORD IT THAT WAY, THAT UPHOLDING THE LEVEL, THE LEVEL TWO IN THEIR REVIEW OF.
SO YEAH. BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED LEVEL ONE.
JUST YES. LET'S JUST STICK TO LEVEL TWO.
SHOULD I RESTATE IT? I THINK THAT YEAH.
BUT I THINK ULTIMATELY YOU'RE GOING TO PROVIDE THE WORDING.
YEAH. GO AHEAD AND RESTATE IT SO THAT WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE VOTING ON.
I AM MAKING A MOTION THAT THE TRUSTEES UPHOLD THE LEVEL TWO GRIEVANCE WITH ONE EXCEPTION, WHICH IS ADDING IN ON THE THIRD REMEDY OFFERED THAT THE HANDBOOK WILL BE REVIEWED FOR UPDATE AND CHANGES TO INCLUDE THE WORDING.
PARTICIPANTS IN ALL ELECTIONS, INCLUDING OFFICER ELECTIONS, WILL BE NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE IN WRITING OF THE ELECTION PROCEDURES.
ANY DISCUSSION? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. ANY OPPOSED? THE MOTION CARRIES SEVEN ZERO.
OKAY. WE WILL NOW MOVE ON WITH OUR MEETING.
[7. SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT]
DOCTOR ARNETT. SUPERINTENDENT REPORT.THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MR. SPRADLEY.
MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, THOSE IN THE AUDIENCE AND VIEWING ONLINE.
[00:05:08]
ONE OF YOUR SIX STRATEGIC BOARD PRIORITIES.WELL, THANKS AGAIN TO CLAUDIA MCWHORTER AND HER COMMUNICATIONS STAFF FOR CREATING THESE FORESTS SO THAT WE CAN CONSTANTLY BE REMINDED OF THE BOARD'S STRATEGIC WORK AND YOUR PRIORITIES. SO YOU'LL SEE THEM THROUGHOUT THE PRESENTATION THAT ALIGN WITH EACH OF THE TOPICS THAT ARE WITHIN THOSE SUBJECT AREAS.
I DO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE NOT ONLY OUR STUDENTS, BUT ALSO OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT.
MANY OF YOU ARE PROBABLY WELL AWARE FROM A NEWS EVENT THAT OCCURRED OVER THE WEEKEND.
A POTENTIAL INCIDENT WAS AVERTED AT THE HIGH SCHOOL WHEN SEVERAL STUDENTS UTILIZING OUR ANONYMOUS TIP LINE, WESTLAKE WATCH, VERY QUICKLY NOTIFIED OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT OF A POTENTIAL THREAT.
CERTAINLY SOME LANGUAGE THAT WAS CONCERNING.
AND THERE WAS SOME MENTIONS OF POTENTIAL VIOLENCE AGAINST A STUDENT OR STUDENTS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
AND SO OUR STUDENTS RESPONDED VERY QUICKLY AND ALERTLY TO THAT BROUGHT THAT TO OUR ATTENTION.
SO WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR THE QUICK ACTION OF OUR STUDENTS.
SO I WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM THIS EVENING.
AND I'M GOING TO ASK CHIEF GREER IF HE'LL COME TO THE PODIUM.
PLEASE. WE HAVE SOME GUESTS WHO ARE WITH US THIS EVENING TO MAKE A VERY SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO ONE OF OUR POLICE OFFICERS WELL, I'M GOING TO TURN THIS OVER TO INTERIM CHIEF HENDERSON HERE, WHO WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A PRESENTATION TO ONE OF OUR OFFICERS, AND THAT'S SHELLY BORTON.
CHIEF HENDERSON. THANK YOU, CHIEF GREER.
AND UNFORTUNATELY, I WAS OUT OF TOWN AND UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN HER RECOGNITION CEREMONY.
BUT IT WAS IMPORTANT ENOUGH JUST BASED ON THE QUALITY OF HER WORK AND HER DEDICATION TO THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT, THAT I PUBLICLY RECOGNIZE HER HERE TODAY. SO THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THIS TIME AND HONOR.
A PARAMEDIC FROM EMS AND OFFICERS FROM THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT.
OFFICER BORTON TOOK A PROACTIVE APPROACH IN ADDRESSING PEOPLE'S NEEDS, USING APPROPRIATE RESOURCES BEFORE THEY REACHED A STATE OF CRISIS TO DIVERT INDIVIDUALS FROM THE EMERGENCY ROOM. EMERGENCY PSYCHIATRIC FACILITIES OR ARREST.
OFFICER BURTON TYPICALLY WOULD COVER THE DOWNTOWN AREA AND THE WEST CAMPUS AREA.
THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING ON THE STREETS.
OFFICER BURTON'S DEDICATION AND ACTIONS EXCEEDED THE MISSION STATEMENT EXCEEDED THE MISSION STATEMENT AND ASSISTING COUNTLESS COMMUNITY MEMBERS A DAY WITH. OFFICER BORTON CONSISTED OF THE FOLLOWING, INCLUDING AWESOMENESS WORKED HAND IN HAND WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM SEVERAL GOVERNMENTAL AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE CITY OF AUSTIN'S HOMELESS STRATEGY OFFICE, INTEGRAL CARE, AND OTHER AFFILIATES.
SHE ASSISTED THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATIVE UNITS AND PATROL WITH RESOURCES AS NEEDED.
CONDUCTED GENERAL OUTREACH AND TO PERSONS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS WITH CIVILIAN MEMBERS OF HOST AND OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND HER PEERS, AND IN HER SPARE TIME. OFFICER BORTON REGULARLY MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM MULTIPLE CITY AGENCIES TO DISCUSS AND COORDINATE AND ENHANCE OUTREACH EFFORTS.
SO TO THAT END, MA'AM, IF YOU COULD COME UP, PLEASE.
I WANTED TO PRESENT OFFICER BORTON.
WITH THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION FOR SBO.
[00:10:05]
DATED THE 15TH DAY OF AUGUST, 2025.SO THAT IS FOR CONGRATULATIONS.
WE ALSO WANT TO GIVE YOU A [INAUDIBLE] [APPLAUSE] ALL RIGHT.
AND THEN I ALSO WANTED TO, YOU KNOW.
PUT ON YOU CAN PUT ON DISPLAY WHEREVER YOU LIKE.
THROUGH HER EXPERTISE, EMPATHY AND TIRELESS EFFORTS, SBO BORTON HAS MADE A LONG LASTING, PROFOUND AND POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF THOSE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS.
THAT IS FOR YOU. AND ONE MORE IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND.
I KNOW IT'S TEAMWORK AND I KNOW IT'S A CHALLENGING JOB, AND I KNOW THAT THERE'S A SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT'S AT AT HOME, MAKING SURE THAT WHEN YOU GET HOME YOU HAVE THAT SUPPORT, THAT CARE.
AND SO, MA'AM, I DID BRING YOU SOME.
THESE ARE ACTUALLY FOR YOU, MA'AM.
THANK YOU AGAIN, DOCTOR ARNETT, I APPRECIATE IT.
ALL RIGHT. WE'VE GOT ANOTHER RECOGNITION COMING UP HERE IN JUST A MOMENT.
SO BUT FIRST, A COUPLE OF ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT I WANTED YOU TO BE AWARE OF.
HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE CENTER FOR CHILD PROTECTION, ALONG WITH HEIDI SAUER, WHO IS OUR DIRECTOR OF COUNSELING, AND OCIE GOMEZ, WHO IS A BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT THERAPIST AT HILL COUNTRY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE CENTER FOR CHILD PROTECTION AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTNERSHIP, A PARTNERSHIP ALONG WITH OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT AND OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT AS WELL. SO THAT WAS A VERY ENLIGHTENING VISIT, BUT WANTED YOU TO BE AWARE OF THAT.
AND THEN NEXT ONE OF THE BOARD TO BE AWARE THAT TYPICALLY IN THE FALL WE WOULD INVITE OUR OR IN THE SPRING, I THINK TYPICALLY WE WOULD INVITE OUR NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS FOR RECOGNITION HERE AT THE BOARD MEETING, AND THE HIGH SCHOOL WOULD LIKE TO DO THAT DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR.
IT'S ON SEPTEMBER THE 25TH FROM 1130 TO 130, AND THEY WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO BE THEIR GUEST.
IT'S IN THE COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
SO PLEASE MARK THAT ON YOUR CALENDARS AND WE HOPE THAT YOU CAN JOIN THEM THAT DAY.
IT WILL BE A SPECIAL EVENT BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IN SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS.
AND THEN SPEAKING OF THAT, WE HAVE ANOTHER RECOGNITION THIS EVENING.
[00:15:06]
THANK YOU. WE WANTED TO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE CHRIS MILLER, FORMERLY OF EANES ISD.AND MARGARET SHEEHAN, WHO ARE OUR APPLE, OUR LOCAL APPLE SUPPORT TEAM EDUCATION TEAM.
I WANT TO SAY A WORD THAT WE WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO SAY, LIKE PARTNER, BUT IT'S ALL GOOD.
AND THIS IS THE OFFICIAL UNVEILING OF THE APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS DISTINCTION CERTIFICATION.
WE'RE THRILLED THAT THIS HAPPENED.
AND FRED BENITEZ AND THE CAMPUS STAFF WORK REALLY HARD TO HELP US ACHIEVE THIS DISTINCTION.
IT'S A PERSONAL DELIGHT FOR ME TO BE COMING UP HERE AND TO RECOGNIZE THIS DISTINCTION.
OH, YOU WANT ME TO USE THE MIC? I WAS USING MY TEACHER VOICE.
THERE'S PEOPLE STREAMING. OKAY, SO THESE THIS IS REALLY RARE.
AND I THINK WHAT THIS SPEAKS TO IS THE YEARS OF STEADFASTNESS OF LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATION TO PROVIDING THE BEST OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR STUDENTS AND YOUR TEACHERS TO DO THEIR VERY BEST WORK.
DEFINITELY ALL THE SUPPORT STAFF THAT THAT WORK, YOU KNOW, HAND IN HAND TO, TO MAKE THIS YOU KNOW, HAPPEN SEAMLESSLY AND STAY THE COURSE, BUT ALSO THE SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY, RIGHT.
THE COMMUNITY NOT TO JUST AGREE TO IT, BUT TO ALSO ENGAGE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY TO MAKE SURE THAT THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN EANES ISD REALLY ADVANCES TEACHING AND LEARNING.
SO IT'S DEFINITELY AN HONOR TO BE HERE TODAY.
SO THE APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS PROGRAM IS BASICALLY AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO CELEBRATE THE BEST IN WHAT BEST IN CLASS OF WHAT WE SEE SCHOOLS DOING WITH TECHNOLOGY NOT ONLY TO, YOU KNOW, USE APPLE TECHNOLOGY, BUT ALSO TO HELP MAKE AN IMPACT.
WE WE LOOK FOR, YOU KNOW, WE LOOK FOR EXAMPLES AND EVIDENCE ON THE CAMPUSES AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE TO PROVIDE THEM SHOWING HOW THEY GO BEYOND JUST SIMPLY MEETING THE STANDARDS, BUT REALLY EMBRACING, YOU KNOW, CREATIVITY AND CRITICAL THINKING AND, AND REALLY USING THE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE STUDENT LEARNING IN A WAY THAT'S ELEVATED AND DISTINGUISHED DISTINGUISH APART FROM WHAT WE SEE ACROSS OTHER DISTRICTS.
AND THAT'S CERTAINLY THE CASE HERE.
THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE AT FOREST TRAIL TO WATCH THEIR CELEBRATION.
AND YOU CAN JUST TELL FROM THE CULTURE WHEN WE WALK IN THE BUILDINGS AT EANES.
AND SO THAT'S A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOLS PROGRAM.
ALL IN ALL, WE HAVE LESS THAN A THOUSAND SCHOOLS ACROSS 37 COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE THAT HAVE RECEIVED THE SCHOOLS DISTINCTION, AND MUCH FEWER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET ALL OF THEIR SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT AS CERTIFIED.
AND THAT'S THAT'S PRETTY SPECIAL.
SO WE HAVE NEW ONES THIS YEAR FOR FRED OVER HERE.
YEAH SO WE HAD 3 OR 4 THAT WERE ALREADY HAD PREVIOUSLY EARNED THE DISTINCTION.
AND THIS YEAR WE DECIDED, LET'S RENEW THOSE AND TRY TO GET ALL OF THE REST OF THEM.
AND AFTER SOME MANY HOURS OF FOOTAGE AND EDITING, WE GOT NINE APPLICATION VIDEOS.
AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM FOR CEDAR CREEK ELEMENTARY.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT CEDAR CREEK IS THE COMMUNITY, THE COMBINATION OF STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FAMILIES AND THE WAY THAT EVERYONE WORKS TOGETHER AND REALLY SUPPORTS EACH OTHER IS SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL. HERE AT THIS SCHOOL.
THAT MAKES THIS JUST A REALLY SPECIAL ATMOSPHERE.
[00:20:04]
OTHER. TEACHERS WORK TO REIMAGINE HOW LEARNING CAN TAKE PLACE IN THEIR CLASSROOMS, AND HOW THAT EDUCATION CAN EXTEND BEYOND THE WALLS OF OUR SCHOOL.AT CEDAR CREEK, WE VALUE COLLABORATION AMONG ALL LEARNERS TO DISCOVER NEW WAYS OF THINKING.
SO THINGS THAT THEY'RE INTERESTED IN, THEY'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT GETTING TO EXPRESS THAT IN A WAY THAT'S AUTHENTIC TO THEM AT SCHOOL AND REALLY USE THAT TO FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION. INCORPORATING TECHNOLOGY IN INNOVATIVE WAYS ALSO ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS TO BE A PART OF SCHOOL CULTURE AND INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY.
WE ENGAGE WEEKLY IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT ASSESSMENTS, STUDENT DATA, AND WAYS TO IMPROVE AND INNOVATE BOTH INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AND OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS. OUR PASSION AS A SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY IS TO CREATE LIFELONG LEARNERS AND INSPIRE DAILY CURIOSITY.
IT'S AMAZING. WE SHOULD HAVE LED WITH THAT, RIGHT? SO I GOT TO TELL YOU FIRSTHAND AFTER, YOU KNOW, I KNEW HOW SPECIAL IT WAS WHEN I WAS HERE.
AND NOW THAT I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TO EXPERIENCE A WIDER VARIETY OF DISTRICTS.
SO THAT'S THAT'S THANKS TO THE WORK THAT YOU'RE DOING.
SO AND EVERYBODY BEHIND THE SCENES AND THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS.
AMAZING. SO WE WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT YOU WITH A BANNER AND A PLAQUE OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZING EANES INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT AS AN APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL DISTRICT. SO HERE WE GO.
SURE. GREAT IDEA GET READY TO MAKE A MOTION.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A MOTION. I'M READY.
AND THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT FOR THIS EVENING.
[00:25:02]
OKAY. WE HAVE ONE ACTION ITEM.[9.1 Request to approve the Austin Police Department memorandum of understanding (MOU)]
I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVED THE AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING.MOTION BY HEATHER, SECOND BY ALLEN.
OKAY. MOTION HAS BEEN MADE AND SECONDED.
ANY OPPOSED? THE MOTION CARRIES SEVEN ZERO.
THAT CONCLUDES THE BUSINESS OF TONIGHT'S EANES ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING.
PLEASE NOTE UPCOMING MEETINGS.
[10. UPCOMING MEETINGS]
WE WILL HAVE A REGULAR MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 24TH, AND THEN A STUDY SESSION ON OCTOBER 8TH.AND WITH THAT, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT 7:47.
